To think it’s ironic all the stops are being pulled to rescue 5 people from a submarine

Yet…. The world allows a boat with hundreds including children to sink

Ideally there should have been rescue provided in both scenarios.

but, the amount of resources put into saving 5 people while the world just looks away when it’s hundreds of poor souls… it’s horrible

All human lives are equally precious. I find it horrifying that so many people are callous about these people's lives because they are rich.

TequilaQueen · 20/06/2023 23:12

You’re right, op.

Yes, me too

BCCGoAway · 20/06/2023 23:13

They were repeatedly offered help and refused it before the boat sank. The Mediterranean isn’t fucking Windermere lake. It’s a nasty sea and is littered with millions of ship wrecks.

You arent gods and goddesses. You don’t allow or not allow ships to sink- and this was a clapped out old fishing boat that was so unseaworthy it was called a “floating coffin” even before it was homicidally overloaded by human traffickers.

AndIKnewYouMeantIt · 20/06/2023 23:09

Quite. I don't really think the football team in Thailand in 2018 should have been poking around a cave formation just before heavy rainfall either, but nobody questioned the media attention and rescue effort there.

The children were not responsible for the decision to do that.

LaMaG · 20/06/2023 23:14

Lefteyetwitch · 20/06/2023 23:01

I've put them in the same category of those who die on Everest.

Completely pointless deaths for zero reason.

I so agree with you. I can't understand why these people are admired. Fit healthy lucky people fulfilling an ego trip.

Businessflake · 20/06/2023 23:15

EscapeRoomToTheSun · 20/06/2023 23:06

Yes. Wealthy white lives. Lives from the global north. Fucking depressing.

You’re right. We should let all wealthy white people die.

I wonder if there’s a way we could save the British Pakistani people on board whilst allowing the white people to suffer a slow and painful death?

Lovepeaceunderstanding · 20/06/2023 23:15

Dotcheck · 20/06/2023 22:55

Fucking irresponsible, entitled rich people. Just because you can do something, doesn’t mean you should

So what? Should we not attempt to rescue them because they’re rich?
Do you have any compassion for wealthy people?

Fucking white people eh. What about the Pakistani people on board?

ninja · 20/06/2023 23:17

This is exactly the post that I was thinking of writing tonight - there's such a stark contrast in the news and the resources spent - just because of an accident of where people are born

The entire world looked the other way did they?
So the survivors just swam the 80km to shore? No one rescued them?

What are you up to OP? You’re posting inflammatory falsehoods about a horrible tragedy…are you trying to start a war with Greece?

Lilifer · 20/06/2023 23:18

HorseyMel · 20/06/2023 23:07

I didn't realise we'd started to ration rescue services - inversely related to a person's wealth. Long live the Labour Utopia of Mumsnet! ✊

It's always been a maritime tradition to help souls at sea.

Competitive virtue signalling at its best! 👏🏻

ninja · 20/06/2023 23:19

Which isn't saying that they shouldn't be rescued, more a comment that plenty of other people have been/are in danger and so not benefit from the same resources to help them

Yes. Wealthy white lives. Lives from the global north. Fucking depressing.

They're not even all white people on that sub. How embarrassing for you. Wink

What a horrible thing to say anyway. Like wealthy white people are not worth saving.

This is a fucking horrible thread. Shame on you @MrsMillhouse for starting it. The resentment and anger towards rich white people on this thread is fierce and toxic.

Some people need to take a long hard look in the mirror.

They're experienced people with an interest in the Titanic and engineering and whatever else. Yes it was a bad idea but they haven't done anything terrible.

Wizzbangfizz · 20/06/2023 23:20

They’ve chosen to undertake something which is dangerous, in a vessel which constantly goes offline. I hope they reimburse the public services on the search and rescue

wow some irony there

Lovepeaceunderstanding · 20/06/2023 23:21

continentallentil · 20/06/2023 23:23

It’s the unusual factor - I don’t mean people don’t want to save their lives, they do. But it’s a technical challenge.

Yes. I'd told how people in less developed countries feel when one of us dies? People everyone here is richer than someone else, everyone here probably has done something risky.

If you've ever ridden a bike on the road, you could be called a privileged white Brit who took an unnecessary risk.

”The World” didn’t look away. The Greek coastguard - directed by the Greek government - possibly did, which will be investigated.

Most of “The World” had no inkling until the tragedy had occurred.

Personally, I don’t believe in borders. I think every human should be free to travel/settle where they deem best for their future. To say that the world looked away is in this case just wrong though.

Latest thing innit?

Vile thread I agree.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 20/06/2023 23:24

it just feels like some lives are valued more than others

Because they are, sadly.

I truly hope they are rescued ( I doubt they will be tbh) but certainly no more than I hope anyone sinking in the Med or Channel is.

Cherryblossoms85 · 20/06/2023 23:25

The comparison did not even occur to me. I merely talked about the Kursk disaster.
