To think it’s ironic all the stops are being pulled to rescue 5 people from a submarine

And the vessel may have been located, in the last few hours. Surely news that will be welcomed by all.

I don't think they're getting special treatment because they're rich and "white" (that's to whoever made the racist comment earlier assuming that they must be white if they're rich). It's because of the horror of the situation and the fact that it's a race against the clock to save them. It's akin to the Chilean miners, the boys in the Thai cave, and the other submarine with Russians on where they sadly died. None of them were rich but they had the same level of interest.

Exactly!!

SunnyEgg · 21/06/2023 09:31

Iwasafool · 21/06/2023 09:28

I think the difference is we heard about the ship after it happened, with the submarine it is hard to avoid thinking of the horror of being trapped and knowing that in a few hours you will die and being totally helpless. I don't know anyone who isn't horrified about the ship and the Greek government are coming in for criticism, it isn't being ignored.

I don't think it is just about wealth, I remember similar horror when the Kursk went down and I doubt that any of the Russian submariners were wealthy. They had less time so it didn't go on for days but it still generated similar reactions in my experience, the sadness for them and their loved ones is very similar.

Yes international help mobilised, including the U.K. Sadly they were told to wait nearby.

DisquietintheRanks · 21/06/2023 09:31

@readbooksdrinktea it's a valid comparison. And if its any comfort I expect when dozens of multimillionaire start dying in small submersible craft during deep sea dives, it will no long make the news

Because I have a view on it that I want to insert? Are you saying you can only comment on threads if you agree with the majority and like the content? :s if anything a thread where people are being so cruel and outspoken warrants responses more than any other.

That’s not what I’m saying at all. I’m simply wondering, if you don’t like a thread because you find it upsetting/think it’s in poor taste/disgusting. Then why keep on watching the thread and reading new comments? Why would you want to keep on upsetting yourself?

I personally don’t understand that at all but as you were

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 21/06/2023 09:34

Didn’t realise it was an either or situation.

it’s all incredibly sad

Icannoteven · 21/06/2023 09:35

It’s all just so fitting isn’t it?

The Titanic - pretty much a symbol of silly, rich, entitled people taking stupid risks because they think their money makes them immune to danger and finding out it doesn’t.

Apparently nothing ever changes.

Sarahtm35 · 21/06/2023 09:35

Migrant boats are being rescued all the time. Our RNLI are constantly out at sea escorting them. You realise migrants pay thousands to traffickers to go on these boats right?
its a cat and mouse situation and they don’t have a way to track these boats so they usually sink before they’re discovered.
I bet you’re one of ‘those’ that hate that they’re still looking for madeleine McCann but don’t even put your brain in gear before you analyse the situation.

Seems as though that's basically what are you saying. Mumsnet HQ have made it clear the thread will remain so whilst all the cruel responses continue which are so ill informed I will respond with my view? Can't believe I'm having to explain how discussions work or my reasoning to join in with one on a discussion forum.

I don't have an issue with money being spent on Madeline McCann although I don't actually understand it. But there have been huge numbers of articles / papers questioning it. That is a perfectly acceptable thing to question and isn't ghoulish at all.

Perfect example of the nastiness I have been mentioning in this thread. You read something this vile and realise actually you can't be this hateful, probably just don't get much attention for what you say anywhere other than an anonymous Internet forum discussing a horrific and unimaginable situation leading to people's death. Hope you feel great about yourself for writing this.

The navy do the same in international waters…so i think the ‘whole world’ comment is unfounded

these people are put to sea with boats that have holes in them and are sometimes forced onto the obviously unseaworthy boats

its just horrific

I agree with misscheifmaker, some excellent posts there

i hope that all those on the sub are rescued in time

Yes. Wealthy white lives. Lives from the global north. Fucking depressing.

At least 2 of them are brown.

The whole point of sailing on The Titanic was the apparent absence of risk - it was unsinkable, remember?
Many of the passengers were very far from being rich.
Hoping against hope that these people will be rescued.

ItsBritneyBitchhhh · 21/06/2023 09:45

I do hope the company is fined / punished for their recklessness though.

Oh 100%

I thought the same thing too tbh. It’s most likely only a matter of time due to that comment
