To think it’s ironic all the stops are being pulled to rescue 5 people from a submarine

Well, I understand that. I don't like it though!

ItsBritneyBitchhhh · 21/06/2023 08:59

Are you even surprised anymore? I’m not!

@MNHQ - this thread is extremely poor taste, taking place WHILE people are potentially lost at sea with hours of oxygen remaining. Disgraceful.

They're not potentially lost at sea. They are lost at sea.

DisquietintheRanks · 21/06/2023 09:01

OK @Tremel well give us an insight into how you think the world should be. Do you value a human life equally? Do you think every death should get the same amount of media attention? How would that work?

PuffinsRocks · 20/06/2023 22:55

I think it's not a race to the bottom and we don't need to make it one. It's horrific in both cases.

To be fair, this one is a race to the bottom. Once they know which bit of the bottom the submersible is stuck on.

I don't understand what's happening - I've reported the thread and several posts, but @MNHQ replied that they wanted to let the discussion run. This place used to be very different. These men are (hopefully) still alive, running out of air, in horrific conditions and it's happening right now. They have families.

You don't understand that this forum isn't about your personal sensibilities? It's avery interesting and pertinent discussion at the moment. I'm sure it will be deleted if it gets ghoulish.

LaffTaff · 21/06/2023 09:03

It's a very fair point. That said, I hope these five men survive.

They are attempting to rescue the submarine crew because they were not attempting to break the law like immigrants on boats.

Disgusting comment Angry

Erm..of course I value all human life equally. Is that a trick question? I don't want the guys in the sub to die. I didn't want the migrants in Greece to die.

anouskita · 21/06/2023 09:05

"They're not potentially lost at sea. They are lost at sea."

FFS. You know full well I meant nobody knows whether they are alive or not.

This is an unfolding situation and it's disgraceful to be talking about their relative wealth or ethnicity at this time.

@MNHQ I reported this comment for an attempt at sick wit, but you said you would not delete it - why? It's not okay to joke about people potentially dying.

Hey it’s not even a joke. This whole thread is sick. I am not the one arguing whether we should leave these people at the bottom of the ocean. Delete it if you like.

Of course it isn't disgraceful to discuss media bias towards rich white people and I can't believe people would even suggest that its not a thing.

ItsBritneyBitchhhh · 21/06/2023 09:06

How is this thread disgusting/in poor taste when it quite literally is the truth? Maybe be angry at the fact that people in this world are treated so differently when we’re all in fact humans?

Bharath · 21/06/2023 09:07

Can’t get upset about our emergency services attempting to rescue our own citizens, vs people who are nothing to do with us and not our problem.

LadyBird1973 · 21/06/2023 09:07

The other thing re coverage is that the sub is news, as in new. The migrant situation is ongoing and has been for years, with no end in sight. Journalists are going to give more attention in the short term to new news, that has a limited amount of time until the situation is concluded. It's not a judgment on the value of human life.

Who says we should leave them there? A few people have pointed out, factually, that if they are discovered at the bottom of the ocean there will be nothing that can be done to rescue them

Of course it is!

CallieQ · 21/06/2023 09:08

I agree. This whole thread is ridiculous, it doesn't matter if they are rich/poor/white/black/gay/straight or whatever, they are humans with lives and families who love them and of course every effort should be made to find and rescue them whatever the cost

Sadly agree, this sub story has novelty value. Sounds awful to say but it does. Thousands of migrants dying every year is common place now which is tragic but true.

Probationnotontarget · 20/06/2023 23:00

This submarine thing is NOT horrific. They’ve chosen to undertake something which is dangerous, in a vessel which constantly goes offline. I hope they reimburse the public services on the search and rescue team

Sane could be said for those getting in boats - yes the reasons are different - but there are huge costs to life and rescue teams etc
It’s about time we started to prosecute anyone arranging these irresponsible boats.

You could say the same thing applies, but the people in the boats are fleeing a bad life and hoping for a better future for them and their dc - doesn't really compare

kirinm · 21/06/2023 09:11

Similar arguments were raised by the public and in newspapers about the efforts that go into locating white missing people / women rather than black people / women.

I think those demanding this thread be deleted or consider it ghoulish are simply showing their prejudice.

Risking theirs and their childrens life for a "chance" at a better future, or the chance to be housed in a hotel for the next 10 years at our expense.
