YABU

Ex teacher here. I am glad that the recording was made. She spouts nonsense (3 sexes?), is intolerant of their views ("despicable"), calls them homophobic, says that they don't belong in the school.

All because they believe biological sex matters and gender is irrelevant. She handled it appallingly. No one would have believed them if we had not heard the recording.

However, I don't condone the abuse she is getting.

catgirl1976 · 19/06/2023 06:50

Why would you be fearful of being secretly filmed if you weren’t doing anything wrong? Genuine question. I appreciate it would be invasive and annoying but if you were a calm, balanced person capable of saying things like “there are lots of different views on this all of which are valid” instead of “your views are despicable and you need to find another school” why would you be fearful as opposed to annoyed?

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 19/06/2023 06:37

We have mortgages, children to feed.

I don't really care, many people have the same. Doesn't give her the right to bully students because they don't agree. She was right to be recorded as they'd never believe it otherwise. I'm hoping she loses her job. I wouldn't want her bullying my kid in school

I hope they viewed like anyone else during any disaplinary proceedings and no extra leniency given to them on account of the number of children they may or may not have and their housing situation. These things have no place in formal procedures.

Mythicalcreatures · 19/06/2023 06:51

I don't feel sorry for her, she said with such confidence that there are 3 sexes, which is absolute nonscence, she threatened the girls and would not have any sort of debate, not qualities that a teacher should have.

Have teaching unions given guidance to their members on this?
e.g. Don't teach beliefs as fact?
I know the DofE should be giving guidance, but the civil servants there see to be captured.

The unions are also captured.

53andABitPodgy · 19/06/2023 06:52

I work with a lot of 6th formers, and I have 2 teens myself. Let me tell you something, there are a small minority of non binary kids and trans and the rest of them are sick of having it rammed down their throats at school 24/7. They get it, people are different, be kind and inclusive, but they are getting fed up of being shut down if they challenge anything.

One of my DC actually said to the teacher "why do we have to have PHSE lessons on this EVERY week. We get it!" and the teacher agreed and said they have to do it. It is actually becoming counter productive as the DC are sick of it.

This student shouldn't have recorded this conversation, but the teacher was way out of line and should be sacked. Basically she was saying to the student that she is not entitled to an opinion and she can leave if she is not prepared to accept that someone can be a cat.

By the way, if you think you are a cat, when you are in fact a person, then yes you do need to be seen by a mental health professional.

Our children are being brainwashed. We need to wake up to this NOW.

RhymesWithOrange · 19/06/2023 06:54

As professionals, teachers should not have let it get this far. We rely on teachers and schools to keep our children safe from dangerous political notions and misinformation.

Just because this is about trans doesn’t give this teacher an out. No one wants her to be subject to a trial by public opinion but the school needs to deal with this appropriately.

Filming can take things out of context. You could say something like ‘suppose I were to say to you, there are only two sexes’ and that get cut into ‘there are only two sexes’. Or you give both sides and a recording of only one of them goes viral. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to be afraid of being recorded no matter how careful and balanced you are.

Ndd135632 · 19/06/2023 06:54

Is all this gender ideology nonsense finally coming out of the naughty corner and onto the mainstream threads. Are people finally waking up to it all?

jeaux90 · 19/06/2023 06:56

I'm glad she was recorded, she was gaslighting those girls and eroding their boundaries. I see teachers like this as safeguarding problems.

Teachers are in such a difficult position on this with absolutely zero advise still, despite promises of white papers. You're damned if you do and damned if you don't. As a pp said, teachers have been fired for not using pronouns as requested. Trans is a protected characteristic and some kids can be very cruel to those who are in any way 'different'. Personally, I can't wait for the white paper which will hopefully give some clear guidance as to how schools should manage these situations.

LilacLemur · 19/06/2023 06:57

I can't see any link - 🤷‍♀️

RecycleMePlease · 19/06/2023 06:58

If a teacher was spouting utter nonsense and threatening the kids, then they needed evidence.

These girls are whistle-blowers.

The teacher needs training on what it is appropriate to say to children, and how many sexes exist (!)

shortandpaleandoldandugly · 19/06/2023 06:58

Why would you be fearful of being secretly filmed if you weren’t doing anything wrong?

Would you be happy to be filmed at work?

“Trans” is not a protected characteristic. Gender reassignment is.

TeenDivided · 19/06/2023 06:59

I would have thought 1 lesson a year on trans ideology would be sufficient.

Some people think this ..... Other people think this .... The law is this ..... Be respectful just as you would to someone of a different religion.

Sorted.

Then spend other lessons on LGB, Disability awareness, Sexual Consent, etc etc etc.

She didn’t handle it well but she shouldn’t have been secretly recorded.
All teachers are not trans activists.
where is the guidance from the DfE? Why are you coming for teachers, not the medical establishment? Is it because it’s easy to be rude about a female dominated profession?
teachers are damned if they do and damned if they don’t.

I am also a teacher. I would never lie to children, nor would I affirm a lie. What this teacher did is shockingly bad.

I think the NEU is very much on the side of TRAs sadly.

RhymesWithOrange · 19/06/2023 07:01

@jeaux90 100% this. The type that transes kids behind parents’ backs. The type that tells girls Tina-was-Thomas has to be naked in their changing rooms with them.

Don’t bleat to me about “guidance”. You only need a brain and eyes to know that this whole ideology is a mess and a safeguarding red flag. Children can see it plain as day and you’re telling me actual grown up professionals can’t?

Again, if this teacher was proselytising their extreme religious beliefs, or pushing creationism no one would be defending her.

RecycleMePlease · 19/06/2023 07:02

I think it's pretty reasonable to be damned for the things this teacher was saying to the girls - she could have just not said anything. If a child asks me a question, and I don't know the answer, then just say that. Don't make it up as you go along, and don't deride them for holding a different opinion.

And as to being filmed - you do know that lots of offices, most retail etc. have CCTV right? Even ones that aren't dealing with children.

It wouldn't bother me unless I was doing something wrong.

catgirl1976 · 19/06/2023 07:05

I often am filmed at work. Most meetings are recorded, pretty much all training I deliver is. I don’t tend to hold colleagues back at the end of the day when the cameras are off and call them despicable and that they need to find a new company though. I’d be rightly sacked if I did.

I would have been mortified if I had been recorded at the beginning of my career as I was still wet behind the ears and some lessons were disastrous.

Other than that, there has to be an element of trust. Most teachers on most days are doing a tough job as well as they can. Behaviour/classroom management and the teaching and learning is based on the rapport a teacher builds with the children. Recording teachers would undermine that relationship, which would have a negative effect on the teaching and learning.

I think in instance, it was justifiable to record. B
