To tell those who lecture me on vaping to Fuck Off

1000 replies

Dogsitterwoes · 17/06/2023 13:52

AIBU. No, let them lecture you
YANBU - Yes, be rude to them

I'm in my 50s and was a long term smoker. I switched to vaping in January. I am considerate and only vape outdoors and move away from other people or into a smoking area. People sometimes
comment, there's a brief convo around my giving up smoking, and 9 out of 10 respond nicely in a 'well done you' kind of way.

The 1 out of 10 though start lecturing me on the evils of vaping. These can be complete strangers, or acquaintances. They go on and on.
Usual themes:

  1. Just as bad for you or worse for you than smoking.
  2. Children are vaping.
  3. Environmental impact of disposables.

I respond politely. I acknowledge there is a concern around all of this, and
1 - I know they aren't exactly good for me but I think they are not as bad as cigarettes, and it's my intension to also stop vaping this year
2 - I agree the manufacturer's should stop targeting non-smokers with the sweet flavours
3 - I agree, I use a rechargeable, but there's probably a lot more all of us could be doing for the environment.

But they do not let it drop. I've literally been lectured at on and on.

YANBU to stop being polite after my initial response and tell them that if I stopped vaping today, I'd be back on the fags tomorrow so mind their own fucking business?

I see these things as giant baby dummies. Adults and teens sucking away on them like they need the comfort of their mother’s breasts. If it’s not those things they’re sucking away on water bottles or coffee cups. I think it’s really interesting psychologically. Life is so stressful and I think it’s a way to self soothe.

I don't think this sounds angry so not sure what the other poster is seeing, maybe just defensive due to the tone of the whole thread.
But you are right there's an element of self soothing. That doesn't mean self soothing is bad though, it's just an interesting take like you say.

RudsyFarmer · 17/06/2023 17:41

sarahh96 · 17/06/2023 17:31

@RudsyFarmer do you? What an interesting analogy. You don't see vaping as a device that contains nicotine, but none of the harmful ingredients that are In cigarettes, which enables ex smokers to transition from cigarettes to a less harmful substance, thus enabling them to quit smoking then? You seem quite angry about it. Why?

Out of the two of us you seem quite angry sarah 🤭

MayThe4th · 17/06/2023 17:42

Swapping smoking for vaping isn’t really an achievement.

So yeah, crack on but don’t kid yourself that you’ve achieved anything by it. You’ve just swapped one vile pastime for another.

Personally I think they should be banned in public places in the same way smoking is. And I am certain that the harm caused through vaping is only a matter of years away from being discovered. When the 20/30 somethings who are vaping now are struggling with serious health problems in twenty years time. Much like smokers.

Shopper727 · 17/06/2023 14:19

I think both should be done at home. The smell of vapes is nauseating tbh fag smoke is horrible too and it triggers my sons asthma. I don’t care what you do as long as I don’t have to breathe it in.

Agreed re at home.

Why should I have to breathe in secondhand smoke.

I been watching for a long time and I think the poorer our mental health becomes the more self soothing goes on. It just makes sense to me that our need to suck on things is linked. I’m happy for anyone to disagree.

TidyHomeTidyMind · 17/06/2023 17:46

Who exactly is lecturing you OP, I smoked for a long time, now I vape. I also drink more than I should and have plenty of other vices but not one single person lecturedme about them!
Maybe you need to work on your resting bitch face and a much firmer 'fuck off' if people try it.

U2HasTheEdge · 17/06/2023 17:53

sarahh96 · 17/06/2023 17:15

@U2HasTheEdge You are referring to the ingredient diacetyl which is banned in the uk and is not in any vapes/liquids.
I suggest you do your research more thoroughly

Did you mean to quote me? I know it's not in every liquid, which is what I said?

BadNomad · 17/06/2023 17:54

Maybe stop talking about your smoking habits with random people. Is that something that comes up a lot in normal conversations? I suppose it's like dieting. If you start telling people about your weight loss, they'll start telling you you're doing it wrong.

LuvSmallDogs · 17/06/2023 17:57

I vape outside in public and no one has ever lectured me. I'd tell them to get stuffed and mind their own. I don't sit right next to people and vape so that it's in their faces, so if it still bothers them they can move.

It’s people commenting to OP though. It’s right there in the OP.

sarahh96 · 17/06/2023 17:59

@U2HasTheEdge no I didn't soz 😢

Did you not read my posts and example? I never raise it first.

I never said you did. I said stop talking about it. You're not obligated to respond to strangers making comments. There is no need to tell them you used to smoke and this is a step-down etc.

mayorofcasterbridge · 17/06/2023 18:03

I hate smoking and vaping (been married too long to a heavy smoker!!). I hate anyone doing either anywhere near me. Was at a concert last night, packed in like sardines, and people were both smoking and vaping in the crowd.

I hate people doing it in the street too! Just fuck off and do it somewhere you're not affecting other people!

dooneyousmugelf · 17/06/2023 18:04

Well you could tell them to fuck off, but I'd maybe consider beating them to it and walk away yourself. If you're coming up against the sheer number of lecturers you say you are, acquaintances and strangers, then you must be indulging in your habit in very close proximity to all these people.

U2HasTheEdge · 17/06/2023 18:05

I think you need to read your research more carefully.

I asked for proof of the hideous damage that we know vaping causes to the lungs.

You post a link to an article talking about Popcorn lungs, and I'm not seeing any proof of known hideous damage being caused to the lungs.

Harebrain · 17/06/2023 18:09

You’re being unreasonable as not only will you get “pop corn” lung but also, you’re old enough to know better.

sarahh96 · 17/06/2023 18:15

@Harebrain popcorn lung has been attributed to the ingredient diacetyl
which is banned in the UK and is not in any vape liquids.
This old argument re popcorn lung has been regurgitated and rehashed so many times by people who simply don't understand the facts. Five minutes research would proof this "myth" and yet non smokers persist with it, presumably because of the 'catchy name'

mathanxiety · 17/06/2023 18:16

I know they aren't exactly good for me

Mwahahaha.

Bless.

UnfinishedUserna · 17/06/2023 18:23

Some people just enjoy judging others. If it wasn't vaping it'd be having a dog or using a loo brush.

Judgmental fucks everywhere. Probably the same ones that #bekind on their facebooks.

jajajajaja · 17/06/2023 18:27

TennisWithDeborah · 17/06/2023 14:30

Not quite on-topic, but I have lost 39 pounds since January with a new eating and gym regime and I have had a few incidences in the gym of people (not staff) offering unsolicited advice on my workout. Some folks can’t help themselves. The best option is not to engage. Ignore. Make no further eye contact.

🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

jajajajaja · 17/06/2023 18:28

ApplesInTheSunshine · 17/06/2023 14:35

YABU. If you’re going to insist on being antisocial (you’re not considerate, btw) then of course you should expect to be lectured.

Don't like it? Tough.

The irony

jajajajaja · 17/06/2023 18:30

Plumbear2 · 17/06/2023 15:00

If someone near me is vaping I have the right to say something. It's fine to do it to yourself, not fine inflicting it on others.

I'll preface this with saying I don't vape but if you spoke to me and I didn't like it, I'd tell you to fuck off as why should I be subjected to your voice??

CherryCokeFanatic · 17/06/2023 18:33

Please stop vaping you are setting a terrible example for younger generation

Riapia · 17/06/2023 18:35

Your stock answer.
“I think you must have mistaken me for someone who gives a fuck what you think. Now fuck off and allow me to enjoy my vape. “
