To tell those who lecture me on vaping to Fuck Off

Dogsitterwoes · 17/06/2023 13:52

AIBU. No, let them lecture you
YANBU - Yes, be rude to them

I'm in my 50s and was a long term smoker. I switched to vaping in January. I am considerate and only vape outdoors and move away from other people or into a smoking area. People sometimes
comment, there's a brief convo around my giving up smoking, and 9 out of 10 respond nicely in a 'well done you' kind of way.

The 1 out of 10 though start lecturing me on the evils of vaping. These can be complete strangers, or acquaintances. They go on and on.
Usual themes:

  1. Just as bad for you or worse for you than smoking.
  2. Children are vaping.
  3. Environmental impact of disposables.

I respond politely. I acknowledge there is a concern around all of this, and
1 - I know they aren't exactly good for me but I think they are not as bad as cigarettes, and it's my intension to also stop vaping this year
2 - I agree the manufacturer's should stop targeting non-smokers with the sweet flavours
3 - I agree, I use a rechargeable, but there's probably a lot more all of us could be doing for the environment.

But they do not let it drop. I've literally been lectured at on and on.

YANBU to stop being polite after my initial response and tell them that if I stopped vaping today, I'd be back on the fags tomorrow so mind their own fucking business?

It's the lecturing that's the twattiness, and that's what OP refers to. It's like being lectured for car ownership or meat-eating, or having an alcoholic drink, or wearing clothes that someone disapproves of.

Yes, it is.

I'm still wondering who is lecturing OP. I live alone and it's likely that only my bestie knows I vape.

KingOfThieves · 17/06/2023 15:27

Personally I find it a bit odd when people tell me they quit smoking for vaping so maybe that is what is opening up the conversation, although personally I can’t be bothered for the debate so I wouldn’t say anything to you. Just stop talking about it

Ingrowncrotchhair · 17/06/2023 15:30

CalistoNoSolo · 17/06/2023 14:24

Vape smoke is really vile. You probably don't realise just how vile it is for non vapers to walk through a cloud of the stuff. On that front alone YABU to vape in public.

I hate perfume and aftershave. Please come tell my neighbours not to get in the lift after spraying themselves with badger anal glands.

Mybusyday · 17/06/2023 15:31

It’s disgusting! Absolutely vile - why should non-smokers be forced into breathing in the shit? I can’t even open the windows in my house or hang out washing because our next door neighbours vape outside. No consideration for people who suffer with breathing difficulties such as asthma - vaping should be banned so should smoking

Sidebar- I've had a stressful couple of weeks and vaping has really helped. I'm watching it carefully because I can see the dopamine being a potential problem, but generally, it's nice to do.

gosh so you’ve essentially taken up smoking as an adult? Or are you a smoker who’s switched to vaping?

Omelette1 · 17/06/2023 15:41

I see vapes like adult dummies / pacifiers

Dogsitterwoes · 17/06/2023 16:33

Some good examples of what I mean on here.

I'm not stupid, I know vaping isn't a perfectly healthy thing to do, but evidence is that is less unhealthy than smoking. I no longer cough all the time or get out of breath walking up hills. For me it's a stepping stone towards not inhaling anything.

No one ever walks through or near my vapour. Literally never. I vape in my garden which is surrounded by arable fields. If I'm out, I make sure I am a good distance from people.

Example, at a pub for dinner this week with a supper club I go to. We were seated at the bottom of the garden, no one else in the garden at all. After the meal I walked up the garden into the car park, more than 50 feet away, for a vape. I could be seen from the table, but there is no way any vapour or smell reached them. One of the people from the club decided to follow me and lecture me.

I've been trying and failing to give up smoking for 20 years. I've tried going cold turkey, I've tried other nicotine replacements, I've tried the tablets from the doctor. this is working for me. I don't understand why people feel the need to be twatty about it, bearing in mind I am careful to ensure it has no impact on anyone else.

Addictions are hard to beat. At least I'm not sinking a couple of glasses a wine most nights and pretending it's normal, even though a lot of people would find that acceptable.

I'm not a moron, or a baby, or weak willed. I made a very bad choice when I was a teenager and am doing my best to undo that.

Would they lecture a man? Nope.

So YANBU, tell them to fuck off.

arcticmnkey · 17/06/2023 17:00

It doesn't matter if you've swapped one for another though, vaping is 95% safer than smoking tobacco, according to the nhs.
As a pp has stated, everyone has their vices. I'm sure you're considerate so just ignore the judgement

Emmamoo89 · 17/06/2023 17:06

QueenofKattegat · 17/06/2023 14:36

No, it isn't. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean you can make false BS statements.

Erm people are ending up I'm hospital because of it

Emmamoo89 · 17/06/2023 17:07

In*

emmetgirl · 17/06/2023 17:08

Tell them to piss off and mind their own business

sarahh96 · 17/06/2023 17:09

I vape. Have done for 10 years. Only reason I gave up cigarettes is because of the cost.
What gives anyone the right to start lecturing another person on, what they think, is bad for their health.
Not all vapes smell, the nicotine ones don't.
If you don't like me vaping then just kindly move along
I don't care about your "google lead research" into the dangers of it. It's none of your business
Just tell them to fuck off OP

U2HasTheEdge · 17/06/2023 14:33

Proof?

Research popcorn lung.

sarahh96 · 17/06/2023 17:15

@U2HasTheEdge You are referring to the ingredient diacetyl which is banned in the uk and is not in any vapes/liquids.
I suggest you do your research more thoroughly

Deathbyfluffy · 17/06/2023 17:16

CleanCar · 17/06/2023 14:12

Youve just swapped one for another?? Vaping cant be good for you. My dad died of lung cancer. I can see why you would use vaping to stop smoking but are you addicted now to vaping?

Vaping is much better for you than smoking - do some research.
It’s still not great, but it’s miles ahead.

Georgina125 · 17/06/2023 17:17

I remember coming home from every night out with the stench of smoking clinging to my hair and clothes. I was a non-smoker but smokers were everywhere and it was impossible to get away from the smell. Now that so many people have switched to vaping, I don't have this issue. I'm not keen on the smell but it doesn't seem to cling in the same way. And it doesn't clog up my lungs when I walk past people vaping.

The jury is still out with regards to the long term effects of vaping but it seems to be a big improvement on smoking.

Most people have vices. Some people drink alcohol, some people eat too much, some people indulge in rough sports, some people fly all over the world on holiday, some people have lots of children. All of these things can impact on health (either directly to the individual or more generally to the population). If we called out anyone who wasn't perfect, there would be very few people left to give lectures.

NoCalories · 17/06/2023 17:18

You’re not being unreasonable about the lecturing, even if their critique is accurate. It’s bloody tedious.

EmpressSoleil · 17/06/2023 17:19

As you can see from this thread, the anti smoking brigade will never be happy until all smoking and vaping is banned. Full stop. You do it in your own garden, no not good enough for them. If you do it in your house they will swear it travels through the walls. They cannot be placated.

Therefore all you can do is take a fuck off approach! I still smoke and these types of threads are counter productive because I try to be as considerate as possible but people on here will say "there's no such thing as a considerate smoker/vaper" so it does lead me to think "what's the point?" If people don't care that I'm making an effort to smoke away from them, why am I bothering? I will go on making the effort for people who aren't judgemental assholes! I mean I can't know at the time whether they are or not. But I like to think we get the most extreme people posting here and people in real life aren't that bad.

Ponderingwindow · 17/06/2023 17:20

I despise smoking and vaping.

good for you for managing to step down from smoking to vaping. It’s a huge accomplishment.

you don’t have to be perfect to be doing something great.

readbooksdrinktea · 17/06/2023 17:21

CalistoNoSolo · 17/06/2023 14:24

Agree.

RudsyFarmer · 17/06/2023 17:21

I see these things as giant baby dummies. Adults and teens sucking away on them like they need the comfort of their mother’s breasts. If it’s not those things they’re sucking away on water bottles or coffee cups. I think it’s really interesting psychologically. Life is so stressful and I think it’s a way to self soothe.

sarahh96 · 17/06/2023 17:31

@RudsyFarmer do you? What an interesting analogy. You don't see vaping as a device that contains nicotine, but none of the harmful ingredients that are In cigarettes, which enables ex smokers to transition from cigarettes to a less harmful substance, thus enabling them to quit smoking then? You seem quite angry about it. Why?
