To tell those who lecture me on vaping to Fuck Off

AIBU. No, let them lecture you
YANBU - Yes, be rude to them

I'm in my 50s and was a long term smoker. I switched to vaping in January. I am considerate and only vape outdoors and move away from other people or into a smoking area. People sometimes
comment, there's a brief convo around my giving up smoking, and 9 out of 10 respond nicely in a 'well done you' kind of way.

The 1 out of 10 though start lecturing me on the evils of vaping. These can be complete strangers, or acquaintances. They go on and on.
Usual themes:

  1. Just as bad for you or worse for you than smoking.
  2. Children are vaping.
  3. Environmental impact of disposables.

I respond politely. I acknowledge there is a concern around all of this, and
1 - I know they aren't exactly good for me but I think they are not as bad as cigarettes, and it's my intension to also stop vaping this year
2 - I agree the manufacturer's should stop targeting non-smokers with the sweet flavours
3 - I agree, I use a rechargeable, but there's probably a lot more all of us could be doing for the environment.

But they do not let it drop. I've literally been lectured at on and on.

YANBU to stop being polite after my initial response and tell them that if I stopped vaping today, I'd be back on the fags tomorrow so mind their own fucking business?

Try me. Show me the data.

We have shown you the data on which we have based our opinion. I’m asking you to do the same.

oh ok I will do exactly what you say because you demand it 🙄 There is plenty of evidence if you look for it and like I keep saying there will be huge evidence coming out in the next couple of months - I shall sit back and watch this thread go very quiet

The BBC just did a report a few days ago where a respiratory professor validated a mums belief her daughters death from a double lung collapse and heart failure was caused by vaping. She never smoked.
Popcorn lung has killed some teenagers in the USA.
We do not know if it actually is better than smoking because we do not know what inhaling these chemicals does. 70 years ago doctors thought smoking was good for you.
So it probably is better than smoking but we need about 50 more years to conclude that vaping is safe.

Did the respiratory professor provide any evidence or did he just 'validate a mum's belief'? Please provide a reference to what you are talking about.

'Popcorn lung' 🙄

Let’s approach this another way.
What are you hoping to get out of posting on this thread? What is your aim?

I am giving you the perfect opportunity to make me eat humble pie here. And you’re not taking it?
Surely, if you had the evidence to back up your claims, you would share it?

Let me ask you - What are you hoping to get out of this thread? What is your aim? What a ridiculous couple of questions!

Popcorn lung has killed some teenagers in the USA

This has been spoken about at length on this thread already. This was caused by using illegal and unregulated vaping products.

Important clarification: These are two separate things

Popcorn Lung:
2000 - case study on eight workers in a popcorn factory who developed severe respiratory illness (bronchiolitis obliterans). A correlation is found with their exposure to high levels of diacetyl in popcorn flavourings. A causative mechanism is neither sought nor found and no other potential correlations, e.g. with other ingredients in popcorn flavourings, are discussed.

https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa020300

2015 - study finds diacetyl in some but not all eliquids and cites earlier 'popcorn lung' study. The authors fail to mention the fact that cigarettes contain 750 times the amount of diacetyl as vapes, or the fact that our hospitals are not stuffed full of smokers with 'popcorn lung'.

https://tobaccoanalysis.blogspot.com/2015/12/new-study-finds-that-average-diacetyl.html

Out of an abundance of caution, since May 2016 when the TPD was made part of UK law, there has been no diacetyl in any legally sold eliquid in the UK or EU.

US vaping deaths:
2019-20 - a cluster of severe respiratory illness, including several deaths, was identified in the US (‘E-cigarette, or vaping, product use-associated lung injury' (EVALI)). The cases were linked to the consumption of black market THC vapes which were found to contain vitamin E acetate as well as several types of oil and other dodgy ingredients, none of which are permitted in regulated vapes in the UK or EU.

This story had absolutely nothing to do with nicotine vaping.

Oh you will do don’t worry!

OK so I take it that you have no evidence to back up your argument. You have Nothing useful or logical to add. Otherwise you would have added it.

So, it’s logical to assume that you’re aren’t posting here in the spirit of good debate, you aren’t here to try and convince any of us that anything you are saying is true. You aren’t here to learn anything new.

So that just leaves you only being here to goad, wind up and troll. I cannot think of any other reason for you to be constantly posting the same stuff over and over with no substance.

For me it is an Epipen job - it is now being shown it is far more addictive that smoking - 90% of school children vape.

the some if vape causes me to need to Epipen - but please feel free to do it next to me whilst I’m sitting outside minding my own business - my right to breathe cleanish air is superceeded by anyone else’s right to vape.

90% of school children vape

According to one 15 y/o and what she told her dad 🙄

The child vaping crisis: ‘From what my daughter says, 90% of her year do it’

Last week, the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health said disposable vapes should be banned because of their popularity among children – with many parents now feeling they are fighting a losing battle

About as scientific as “but I saw a meme on Facebook…”

There is plenty of evidence - I won’t provide evidence upon your say so for two reasons a) because there is far too much to jot down and b) you would just dismiss it because you are not interested in anything other than your own opinion - that evident throughout the whole of the thread. No goading, winding up and trolling here just having an opinion like everyone else on the thread so don’t single me out just because you don’t like my viewpoint

I just watched this year's Michael Russell Oration from the GFN in Warsaw. Roberto Sussman is a nuclear physicist which is an unusual choice for a talk about tobacco harm reduction but he recognises BS science when he sees it.

Please enjoy this whistlestop tour around the terrible policy-based evidence-making that has marred tobacco control for far too long now. (Warning: contains detailed explanation of why nobody's washing will end up drenched in the discusting stench of vaping - WITH DIAGRAMS!)

Yeah I don't think I'd ever love it like I loved the ciggies but I am probably your definition of the saddest sort of vaper because I build my own and really enjoy the electrical and circuitry sides of it

humblemeep · 29/06/2023 22:41

I cant find the BBC news bit must be too new. I saw I yesterday on news 24 so it will no doubt be repeated. It was about a mum whose daughter died of 2 collapsed lungs which is very rare.
