I mean the Scuttlebugging, FLY things mostly. And the thing where they always make a song out of fruit and veg.

..But also how I always manage to kill stone dead every thread I go on.

Is there a manual somewhere?

OP posts:
ibblewob · 21/02/2008 21:52

Ooooh, I like this thread, am very much a newbie too, have only been around a few weeks, and have had mixed experiences... felt a bit ignored sometimes, then posted a question and got quite a few replies so felt chuffed... then got into a titchy disagreement - v. exciting!

Am kind of recognising names which come up all the time - but I think a "newbie" thread or something similar is a good idea. I was on a fantastic forum to do with work once where there was an 'introduction' section, where you just posted a couple of lines about yourself and then everyone else just came and said 'welcome, hello', that kind of thing. It felt really good to get loads of replies to your first post! But there was only a couple of hundred members on that one... maybe it wouldn't work for the 1000s of MNers?

Desiderata · 21/02/2008 21:55

OK, Too Special .....

Princess82 · 21/02/2008 21:56

7 months is along time for someone to be dedicated and around a forum 2special.
no matter where you go theres always going to be an in group who leave others out and have their own special rules.

mindy26 · 21/02/2008 21:56

im pretty new here too, have posted a few times for advice, and people have been fantastic, so hello evry1!!!

twospecialgirls · 21/02/2008 21:56

there are a lot of people on here arnt there !
and this is just me tbh i dont want to give my life story away on here and i dont think you should have to just to come on and have a bit of chit chat now and again and i dont think i should have to be a die hard mnetter to be accepted ! just mo

Desiderata · 21/02/2008 21:58

No, people do that here, ibble. They post in CHAT and say something like 'Hello, I'm new here,' and lots of people come on and say 'Welcome,' and so forth.

You just have to get stuck in on Mumsnet. We're not fluffy, but generally speaking the most of us are good women with our hearts in the right places.

See what we can do when someone's in a fix

3andnomore · 21/02/2008 22:00

The threads mentioned by the OP are all sort of little communities within the large world that is mn...unlike a lot of the parts on mn, where people just sort of chip n as and when, those threads are continoued longterm, hence people kinda being very "cliquey" and well, you just get to know the people very well...doesn't mean that other people aren't welcome...but it's just like in rl...sometimes you click immediately, sometimes it takes time...

Wotzonked · 21/02/2008 22:02

You sometimes have to wear one of these
hard hats

No one said you were a cunt and no personal attacks are allowed and will get deleted by MN HQ ( just click the little red ! to report a post) if you want to.

Desi's post was directed at everyone. She has said that.

I do hope you read some of the other comments that seem to be more welcoming.

Anyway welcome any new MNers, and please stay of you wish to.

ibblewob · 21/02/2008 22:03

twospecial, I think it's a kind of 'get what you give' thing - if you reply to lots of people's posts, people will reply to yours I guess.

But why do you think you're not being accepted? I think the fact there are lots of people on this post means loads of us feel a little bit like a fish out of water on MN sometimes. I think it's hard to associate being 'accepted' with such a faceless, anonymous environment - I guess if you mean in-jokes and people taking specifically to you, that must be a 'time' thing.

twospecialgirls · 21/02/2008 22:05

im not going any where i quite like it here i know it was directed at everyone but i was just asking why she would say that as i have said i didnt get it and thought it was rude i have posed on many threads and had goo fun but i also find it clicky and i wont apologise for that

ibblewob · 21/02/2008 22:05

Thanks Desi - didn't know people did that in Chat. Think MNHQ should direct people there in their "getting started" section?

ThinWhiteDuchess · 21/02/2008 22:06

I am so pleased/relieved to see this thread & realise I am not the only new MNer who was feeling a little overwhelmed by all that MN has to offer. I have sort of dipped my toes in the water, but I think I will now take the advice of the long-term posters and get stuck in! Thanks PM for being a lot braver than me to kick this off!

squilly · 21/02/2008 22:06

I'm pretty new here and I have to say I feel a bit daft posting as I am generally the thread killer...or the invisible threadster, the one that gets passed over without any comment. I find the 'not clever' thing rings very true.

Alternatively, I did think about changing my name to fredkilla or the invisiposter. If anyone sees this, they'll have to ignore it of course...or perhaps this post will just die a natural death too!

i dont think im not being accepted !!

Princess82 · 21/02/2008 22:07

should even such offensive language like that be allowed to be said? its insulting and does not give a welcome atmosphere to the site.

It used to be nice and cliquey here. but it is far too busy now. also I am far to beusy to be famous on MN anymore. but i used to be world famous round ere and all over the information super highway, no but i did, realy, troooooly, when I had a job that didn't require any work whatsoever. i might be back though as got a noooo poooota today.

it rocks

MrsBadger · 21/02/2008 22:10

MN is uncensored and self-policing, Princess - no swear filters and no moderators (unlike some places hem-hem )

twas ever thus

you can always report a post if you think it goes against MN's philosophy

Monkeybird · 21/02/2008 22:10

oh princess don't be a princess! I'm still pretty new (less than 6 months) and they're joking...

It would be awful if MN lost it's edge - which sets it apart from all the overly luvvie huggy parenting sites... what you get here - along with the occasional humourous abuse is the wittiest, funniest, most realistic mothers who are not afraid to laugh at themselves... Just lurk until you know that they're laughing with you not at you...

Monkeybird · 21/02/2008 22:12

oh god...

ThinWhiteDuchess · 21/02/2008 22:12

I love MN -- best discovery I have made since becoming a mother...only wish I had found it when I was pg.

Desiderata · 21/02/2008 22:12

You see, if I hadn't told you you were all cunts, this thread wouldn't be as big as it is

2special, honestly ... I mean no harm at all, but you really need to get a sense of humour. I have told you repeatedly that my comment was a catchphrase from a previous thread, and it was entirely in context with the 'I don't get MN' question.

In fact, it's exquisite irony, really.

For the last time, I was not being offensive to anyone. Anyone with a sense of humour, that is
