AIBU to think I can turn my weight around?

I’m 5’3 and 18 stones. I know.

I have two pairs of jeans that I wear on rotation. Both now have “chub rub” holes at the top. I have 3 long sleeved tops that I wear on rotation.

I'm pretty much a size 20/22.

I’ve lost weight and put weight back on. Before children I was a trim size 10. I weigh so much more now than I did when 40 weeks pregnant!

Today is the first day when I’ve felt overwhelmed with the heat.

People say “gosh, aren’t you hot in jeans!” “Put some shorts on!” etc etc etc. 99% of the time they mean well but it’s SO depressing - I don’t have shorts and they would look so awful that I wouldn’t wear them. Ditto skirts (they really looks bad) but also the chub rub would mean I couldn’t walk for more than a few minutes without a lot of pain.

Im so over it all. And yet apparently not enough to lose weight.

So yeah. Help? And if you have a fat friend in jeans, don’t ask why they’re not in shorts. Please.

I have done Fast 800 before which worked. It’s just sticking to it that’s tough. I don’t have a partner and no one to cook for me. DC too young to cook and obvs I need to cook normal meals for them (they’re healthy weight and sporty).

Im better if I’m on a plan that I know what I’m having every day. Fast 800 ended up with me eating a mainly vegan diet and I felt amazing. Why do I go back to cake….

Thanks for reading this far.

I'm steadily losing weight using the low GI diet plus exercise and calorie counting. Once or twice a week I do intermittent fasting or 800 calories. Not having to completely cut out all carbs has made sticking to the new diet much easier.

Cinders15 · 10/06/2023 13:01

I'm wearing this today - from M&S but it is from live unlimited so I'll be visiting their web page, as this is very cool and flowing!

Firstly, yes, you can do this!

I recommend finding some lovely clothes in your current size which make you feel good. Also agree with chub rub shorts from snag tights under a maxi dress or skirt.

The better you can feel about yourself now, mentally, the easier it will be to do the right thing for your body.

What else can you do to feel good? Hair; nails, Princessing?

I am another advocate for Ozempic, I've been on it 4 months and lost 2 stone. Others have been much faster but for me this is sustainable.

slithytoveisascientist · 10/06/2023 13:59

I mean other people have lost that weight in a faster time, sorry wasn't clear

Usertumster · 10/06/2023 14:36

Thank you all so much. I have ordered some chub rub shorts from snag. Now hunting for a dress or two that aren’t hideous on a short person!!

I'm not going to comment on your weight as I'm a lot fatter than you (though also a lot taller!!).

Maxi dresses are my go to. There are loads of lovely ones out there which I wear with the snag shorts and look and feel nice and summery! I buy most of mine from Yours but I think other online places have good selections!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 10/06/2023 14:38

Stop it, why would a dress be hideous on a shirt person?! Well done 😊

User1367349 · 10/06/2023 14:42

Well done!

flumposie · 10/06/2023 14:42

I also wear the snag chub rub shorts.
I lost weight in 2018, put it all back on over lockdowns . Just started to lose it again for health reasons. I tend to lose a pound a week using my fitbit and my fitness pal. We can do this !

Darcy86 · 10/06/2023 14:42

Haven't rtft but I was a similar weight and height last year and I did slimming world and lost 3st in about 4 months. I am still obviously overweight but feel so much better - would have kept going but I am now pregnant so just trying to maintain as much as I can until baby comes, then I'd like to get back on it. I know SW has mixed reviews but it really worked for me and I was rarely hungry. Good luck!

I'm short and fat, I wear dresses from George at Asda with chub rub shorts. I'm aware they're not exactly flattering but being hot with a bright red face is an even worse look on me.

These ones are lovely and cool.

I'm 5ft 1, the black one comes to below my knee and the khaki to my ankle

I'm size 20, got the XL and find it generous for both

I would never comment on what someone is wearing.

However, I am size 24, I am wearing shorts today. I also wear anti chub rub knickers (with legs) from snag and big bloomer company so I can also wear lovely dresses which are very cooling. If you go to a site that caters for bigger sizes anything is possible!

KarmaStar · 10/06/2023 15:02

Hi!
the loose boho ,wide leg trousers are brilliant, buy some ankle length ones or mid calf if you are worried they will be too long, and in cotton or linen.you'll look cool and collected and fashionable, pair with a loose shirt ,but of jewellery and you're ready to wow....or just go out and not melt.good luck.🌻

IheartNiles · 10/06/2023 15:18

I’ve started fasting but used to get terrible headaches so I’ve tried reversing the times. I now eat in a 6-8 hour morning-mid afternoon window. So in reality missing an evening meal plus all the snacks I used to do then.

It’s only been a week or so but I feel great. Stomach fat is going down and I feel energised. The horrible acid indigestion I had at night has gone. I’m starting to crave less crap.

Maybe give that a whirl? I really hate dieting but this one doesn’t feel like deprivation. Also I’ve been depressed for a couple of years and now seeing a bit of light which helps with the motivation. Maybe look at what is driving the habits.

Ilovenutellaaaaa · 10/06/2023 15:22

Can't you wear a long loose skirt?, the long/looseness of it will hide what you want hiding while still looking flattering and stylish, and also it will be much cooler for you that jeans..

Oh love, you need to be nicer to yourself.

I’m short and fat, I wear dresses, I look bloody awesome.

No one can see the size label in your clothes. They won’t be any more surprised by your weight in a dress than they would be if you’re wearing jeans and a tshirt.

In fact, if you think jeans and a tshirt makes you blend in…it has the opposite effect when everyone else is in a cool dress or shorts in hot weather.

On the losing weight, a pp had some fab advice - if you’ve been a size 10 then think about how you behaved when you were that size, what did you eat, what exercise did you do?

Equalitea · 10/06/2023 16:34

Chafing shorts under skirts/dresses.

zusje · 10/06/2023 16:43

If you wanna lose weight do it in a healthy, controlled way. Fad diets, restricting food and labeling food as good or bad is part of diet culture and is not helping. It's going to take long(er) but far more likely to be sustainable in the long run.

But in meantime try to change your outlook. So many of us (me included) were brought up in a society that is/was obsessed with the number on the scales or the size on our clothes label. I am obese and should lose weight for health reasons, but all the yo-yo dieting (I started with diets at the age of 14) has meant two things: a. My metabolism is shot and b. My motivation is non existent (kind of "what's the point, I've lsot it before and then put it all back on and then some" attitude). I've spent years hating my body, the way I look. I have stopped everyone from taking pictures of me or wore only black/jeans (even at weights I would kill to be at now). About a year ago I decided to change my attitude. I wear what I want and feel comfortable in. I found a couple of brands that clothes fit me and make me feel fabulous (Fatface, White Stuff, Popsy to name a few). I discovered Snag tights/chub rub shorts and never looked back. I replaced all my social media "influencers" with people who look like me and live happy, fullfilling lives. I follow a few accounts that show how to pose for pictures etc. But mostly I follow the advice of "confidence doesn't come in a day, start living your life and taking the pictures and it will come gradually" and this is exactly what I did on holiday a few weeks ago. I allowed my boyfriend to take pictures. I looked at them with kind eyes and rather than focus on the triple chin or the blemishes/wrinkles whatever I focused on my happy smile, my tan, the way the dress accentuated my curves etc. Am I 100% there? Absolutely no. Do I still need to lose weight? Absolutely yes. Do I still look myself in the mirror and wanna cry and say hurtful, horrible things to myself? F' no! And that is half the battle!

Big hugs from a fellow big girl!

coeurnoir · 10/06/2023 16:55

I'm older than you and slightly bigger at a 22/24. I'm also short. I tend to wear shirt dresses or tea dresses which all come to just above ankle length on me at 5'2".

I feel comfortable and look good in them. I don't wear anything knee length or above because I don't feel comfortable and I'm certainly not wearing jeans this weather.

Like you I need to lose weight, but right now I'm not in the place mentally....and that is the most important thing for starting the huge change in lifestyle that this will mean. Im also in chronic pain with an injury and even moving at the moment is difficult.

OP whether or not you lose weight is immaterial really. Right now you have a body to clothe and it is a fab body because it keeps you alive every day. Enjoy it and enjoy trying out new clothes that you like...not what hides you. To be brutally honest, you are fat. Everyone looking at you can see you are fat. Wearing uncomfortable clothes is not going to hide the fat and life is too short to get hung up on what people see when they look at you...hint: they aren't really looking at you because they are too full of their own anxieties and hang ups to care what you look like.

Cally70 · 10/06/2023 17:01

I'm 5'3" and a size 22/24. I'm glad you've ordered some chin rub shorts. They're a game changer. I've got a few dresses from New Look. They do a decent 'Curve' range and aren't expensive. There's no way I could wear shorts either with my short fat legs

Applesinmyhouse · 10/06/2023 17:01

Just because you’re fat doesn’t mean you have to torture yourself in uncomfortable worn out clothes. Buy a dress. A maxi dress if you feel uncomfortable. Buy some new jeans and a linen shirt. You deserve to look nice.

Anoushkaka · 10/06/2023 17:09

I think when you get to that weight it's hard to break the cycle especially with young children and no help. I was a similar weight with three young children. I got weightloss surgery, lost all the weight and got it reversed. I'm now able to maintain a healthy weight because my addiction to food is gone.

Americano75 · 10/06/2023 17:14

First things first, get yourself out to the shops and buy yourself some lovely clothes! Your self esteem sounds at rock bottom and until you start treating yourself with love and kindness no diet or eating plan is ever going to work.

GracePalmer33 · 10/06/2023 17:15

Be nicer to yourself. Calling yourself names isn't right. You deserve to feel good about yourself at any size and trying to give your self esteem a little boost will make you feel good and probably more motivated to make lifestyle changes than when you feel shite.

Get some cheap ish summer dressers. Get some cycle shorts. Matalan do some that are amazing and don't dig in or create rolls, and your thighs just stay cool and slide straight past each other. No friction whatsoever 😂 even when I am a size 10 my thighs rub together so I've always worn them. I'm currently a size 16 /18 after having a baby (and I'm pregnant again) and I have struggled with my New body and not feeling confident but I tell myself I deserve to enjoy life, enjoy each day and enjoy the summer NOW , not when I'm a size 10 again (that day may never come so am I just gonna spend the rest of my life miserable?)

Ditch the jeans and long sleeve tops in this heat and get some nice summery floaty dresses. Jeans and long sleeve don't make you, or me, look thinner. People can still see you are fat whatever you wear. so you're either fat in a pretty weather appropriate dress, or you're fat in an outfit that makes you stand out even more in a crowd of people all wearing summer clothes. There's nothing wrong with fat bodies. Plz don't be ashamed. You deserve to have skin out just as much as a slim person.

SheWentWest · 10/06/2023 17:20

One life, one body just put those shorts on! I’ve got the same stats as you and I just get on with it. Seriously people will get over it! Or try some mid calf skirt with snag chub rub shorts. I also like wearing shapeless stretchy cotton dresses like you see older women in southern Europe wear. My figure is much the same as theirs 😂
