Respect the ocean? Shark attack

bookofnotes · 09/06/2023 21:34

So I just saw the video and article about the man who was attached and killed by a shark in Egypt.

Comments were saying “you need to respect the ocean” and “he invaded the sharks home” and I just think fuck off.

Yes the ocean needs to be respected in regards to pollution, transport, fishing, disturbing habitats. But people (and any living being) are entitled to swim in the ocean.

OP posts:

Sharks really aren’t the most dangerous thing about the sea either.

do you also feel that water currents should somehow realise that people are entitled to swim in the sea?

🤣🤣🤣🤣

RoseslnTheHospital · 09/06/2023 22:12

It's not an issue of right or wrong or respect/disrespect. It's about risk and judgment of risk. The swimmer, whether they realised it or not, took a risk and suffered the worst possible outcome.

A rational and reasonable conversation would be about how the risks can be mitigated and how swimmers and people in the water can know about the risks and decide what is too risky for them.

pinksheetss · 09/06/2023 22:13

Would you walk into a Lions den OP because you have just as much right to be there too?

Humans are already killing the earth, killing animals daily and add to it we now have the
'Right' to 'safely' swim in the ocean too?

It's a terrible shame what happened but the barbaric way of 'justice' to that shark was disgusting behaviour.

They beat a fucking shark to death for basically doing what sharks do in their natural habitat. We don't have a right to enter their homes and do what we like without consequences.

Agree with this completely

LookAtThisMess · 09/06/2023 22:14

I think it was awful that the shark was beaten to death. I also think it’s really disgusting that people filmed and took photos of the young man being mauled to death. He was terrified and screaming for his dad. I really hate people sometimes.

@Catlord

What's this about dolphins?

I think it's in Classics- the OP was outraged at some of the immoral behaviour of dolphins

wildinthecountry · 09/06/2023 22:16

I see dogs are getting a break today then .😁

fucktonofcats · 09/06/2023 22:18

It's really sad that this young man died in such a violent way in front of his dad.

However, swimming in the ocean carries a risk.

It's like hiking in the great outdoors in the US. You're entitled to do that... a bear is also entitled to try to eat you.

We should put down dangerous dogs, because we've domesticated them, brought them into our environment and failed them. Wild animals are different. If we go into their habitat, we have to expect to play by their rules, not ours.

Sharks don’t own the entire ocean. Regardless of risks and attacks, swimming in the ocean isn’t harmful to sea creatures.

I’m not sure if you understand how nature works. If humans decide to frolic in the domain of prey driven carnivores then they should accept the risks.

Like if I decided to go for a stroll on the M25 I’d probably have to accept I’d die a nasty death.

You sound a bit dim to be honest.

Totally agree.

This is so weird, Is this the water troll again?

LaurieFairyCake · 09/06/2023 22:28

Poor human Flowers

Poor shark Flowers

(Shark attacks are very rare)

drstranger · 09/06/2023 22:30

What am I even reading 😂 dolphins and sharks piss you off op??

excelledyourself · 09/06/2023 22:31

But people (and any living being) are entitled to swim in the ocean.

Damn right, OP. I don't know how many times I have asked, politely, that my local seaside would crank the heating up so I don't have to consider that I could possibly freeze to death in there.

Alas, i am yet to be accommodated.

RudsyFarmer · 09/06/2023 22:31

It seems to me that sharks do what they doi in the sea- kill shit. And humans do what we do best on the land -kill shit. So both species got their way that day.

croft89 · 09/06/2023 22:32

It's a risk you take

StarDolphins · 09/06/2023 22:38

bookofnotes · 09/06/2023 21:51

Wrong about what? Seeing as you missed my point.

My point is that people can swim in the ocean, it doesn’t harm animals.

It’s not disrespectful to swim. It’s got nothing to do risks. You can still accept the risks and “respect the ocean”

So what do you want done then?

Someone to have a word with them?
Ban them from their natural habit!?
explain the consequences in the hope they don’t eat people?
Cull them?

They live there, it’s their home, they have a right to do what’s natural to them in their environment & we must only enter knowing & accepting it’s a risk to our life to do so.

🤣 loving this thread!

SilenceOfTheGoats · 09/06/2023 22:39

Entitlement is what causes unnecessary deaths. Entitled to swim in the ocean = entitled to not get a welcome by the ocean's inhabitants.

Those who think they're entitled to do what they want without consequences, while telling everyone else to fuck off, can f off too.

I was just thinking the same thing!

kingtamponthefurred · 09/06/2023 22:42

Where is this 'right to swim in the ocean' enshrined, exactly? And who is responsible for letting the sharks know about it?

WhatADrabCarpet · 09/06/2023 22:42

Hmmm... light seems to be bending around a few posters of late.

SilenceOfTheGoats · 09/06/2023 22:47

Sharks really do need to learn to share nicely.

OrangeAutumn · 09/06/2023 22:56

I am with the humans, I watched Jaws - those sharks know what they are doing.

JustGeorgie · 09/06/2023 23:11
