Respect the ocean? Shark attack

So I just saw the video and article about the man who was attached and killed by a shark in Egypt.

Comments were saying “you need to respect the ocean” and “he invaded the sharks home” and I just think fuck off.

Yes the ocean needs to be respected in regards to pollution, transport, fishing, disturbing habitats. But people (and any living being) are entitled to swim in the ocean.

Also would like to say that this I hope this man rests in peace and my love goes out to his loved ones x

Not too sure what your actual question is here. Of course you can swim where you’d like. But if you choose to swim in the ocean, especially in areas such as the Red Sea where shark attacks happen more frequently, you accept the risks that come with it. And no, the shark in question shouldn’t then be killed because of it.

Humans kill an estimated 73 million sharks a year. Sharks kill an average of 10 people a year, some of those provoked by humans, most due to mistaking them for seals/turtles.

If you’re going into the ocean rip tides are estimated to kill around 1000 people per year. Jellyfish kill an average of 40 people a year. They don’t sound as scary as Jaws but far more deadly. Go swim in the sea. Just do so with caution and knowledge, and accept the risks.

Quite incomingtraffic

Eyerolls and capitals won’t change what has happened.

It is tragic that someone died. What happened to the shark was barbaric.

And beating a creature to death hasn’t changed anything either.

Is this a reverse?

Aslanplustwo · 10/06/2023 08:18

While what happened to the man was very sad, if you swim in the ocean you have to be prepared to take the risks.

You mean from the Shark? It couldn't be, the Shark unfortunately died a horrible death.

Respect the ocean is just a way to remind people that there are many ways the ocean can kill you. So don’t underestimate it. It’s not a giant paddling pool.

Sharks really do need to learn to share nicely.

I was already laughing, but I've just nearly choked on my coffee, thank you 😂

Take it up with the people who chuck food waste off their boats and dump dead cattle off cargo ships so they don’t have to pay import charges. Human activity has brought the sharks into the beach areas.

Oh for god sakes people. Someone out there lost a son, a brother, a boyfriend two days ago. And you are all here debating whether we should respect the ocean 🙄

Maybe you should all be RESPECTING that man who died and his family right now by not doing this.

I feel for them, but he went swimming in the ocean where this risk was prevalent. An innocent shark has died, simply because he did what a shark would do.

And it’s a shark. I don’t think sharks are one of MN’s user groups.

People are entitled to walk through the jungle as long as they understand they may be killed and eaten by a lion or 2......

Lions live on the savannah; if you get eaten in the jungle it's more likely to be by one of the few remaining tigers.

crabbyoldappletree · 10/06/2023 15:31

Sharks really don't like or want to eat humans, we aren't their natural food source. But because humans are depleting the oceans, and the human population is much bigger, we're going to be coming into conflict with these top predators much regularly.
It's not just sharks changing their pattern of behaviour orcas are too.
I feel very sorry for the guy who died and his family, but I don't agree with killing the tiger shark, I have no idea how they knew it was that shark which caused the fatality.
As intelligent creatures we (humans) need to use our brains to develop ways of preventing conflict, look at the technology we have at out disposal; in popular seaside resorts we could use camera drones with a link to an app to alert people that a shark is in the area, and then 'flag' the beach as a 'no go zone'.
People also need to be aware of shark behaviour and that tiger and bull shark will all hunt and feed in shallow waters (approx 3-6 foot), great whites generally prefer slightly deeper but some will chance reasonably shallow water if hunting.

Tinkerbyebye · 10/06/2023 15:44

Correct, any living thing can swim in the ocean including sharks

its a choice a human being makes when they enter the ocean
