(Light hearted!)

I'm so hungry, really tired, kids and dp are out, no idea what I'm eating and whatever it is they are cooking smells absolutely blooming fantastic. The smell is wafting through all the windows... It's tangy and savoury and has some kind of wonderful spice hanging around the edges.

AIBU if I pop round with a plate and ask them to fill it with whatever they're having...or should I settle for a fish finger sandwich?

Go round in search of a 'missing parcel' and then make the comment to see if it works.!

I'm more interested in why you needed to borrow an axe!

I was wondering about the axe, too.

Can a thread restore your faith in humanity? Yes, yes it can 😁

I grew up living next to a Pakistani family, I was regularly invited over for delicious food. I still have one of their family recipes 33 years later and every time I cook it it takes me back to my childhood. I have fond memories of going over for Eid. Having henna designs on my hands.

When I worked in A&E as a newly graduated nurse, the Mom of one of our doctors used bring in a few trays of freshly cooked onion bhajis and samosas at midnight. I asked her for the recipe and she invited me to dinner on my day off. Her son and I are now happily married with 2 teenagers😀

@caun omg what a modern day true love story ❤️

I think this is one of the nicest threads I’ve read for a long time 😊

It is, it's fair warming the cockles of my heart. It's a joy to read.

Better hope they're not on MN - if they are they won't open their door!

AmandaHoldensLips · 08/06/2023 19:38

I had a neighbour come round to complain loudly about the cooking smells when I was cooking outside because she and her husband were on a diet and it was driving them insane.

I told them that everything was zero calories because it was a Tuesday. So they came over and joined us for a massive munch-up.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 08/06/2023 19:38

I used to work with a lady from the phillipines, one day she had a tupperware of pastries for lunch and I commented they looked amazing. The next day she turned up with 30 of them for me!! They were even more delicious than they looked!

She also had a bit of a party, and did a buffet of the most amazing curries and pastries and wondrous things. I have a couple of allergies, so asked if there was any x in things, next thing I know a lady is walking me along the buffet giving me a detailed recipe for everything. I so wish I'd had a pen to write it down. It was honestly the best food I'd ever eaten.

Omg when I was on the postnatal ward there was a woman opposite me whose entire family turned up with several bags of bento boxes full of hot steaming delicious smelling food. I got out of bed, pulled my curtains closed and had a quiet cry

The woman in the bed opposite me with dc1 had family who did similar. Only her mum went around every bed asking if anyone wanted any. It was absolutely delicious. The day she was discharged, dc1 was in Nicu and I ended up missing meals. I came back to bed to find they'd left a note and food wrapped up in foil on my night stand because it was so important that new mums kept their strength up. Their kindness made such an impact on what was an awful time in my life.

Now that we all work from home, the one thing I miss about going into the office is our legendary "bring and share" lunches.

We had a very diverse team and everyone brought in something from their home country. We had food from Bangladesh, from South Africa, from Jamaica, from Poland from the UK - from all over. Those lunches were amazing and enough was brought in for everyone to have at least a spoonful taster of each dish.

The aromas that wafted around from about 8am were tortuous and lunch was always early on those days lol.

On one shameful occasion, one Bangladeshi woman brought in some amazing samosas. She arrived at the office at 9.10am. The samosas were all gone by 9.30am so only our immediate team got to taste them!

Go on OP, i dare you pleeeease go over and tell us what they give you. My Indian neighbours across the road had a wedding last week and i was soo cheekily dissapointed they didn't invite us over for food Blush

Hawkins0001 · 08/06/2023 19:42

My new neighbours are from South Africa and have a BBQ most weekends since the weathers been nice. Definitely want to hand over a plate as it smells so gooood (and I hate cooking).

I grew up in SA and there is nothing better than a good old braai. I actually just got some lovely boerewors today that I'll be getting on the coals this weekend 😀.

Let us know if you go round!
Our neighbours are British Indian they have an amazing fig tree which comes over into our garden. They’ve said before help yourselves and the figs are Gorgeous so once I was rifling through for figs (trying not to be too obvious!). The next minute the grandma came round with a massive bag of figs! They were absolutely delicious it was such a nice gesture.

This is such a lovely thread. These are the stories the papers should be printing rather than going on about the bloody culture wars.

ArseMenagerie · 08/06/2023 19:48

This thread is very sweet! Don’t let anybody tell you multiculturalism isn’t a wonderful thing 💕🌎

@Dinosauratemydaffodils this thread is awesome... But your story has just about brought me to (warm and fuzzy) tears.

The kindness of strangers stays with you for a long long time!

OMG... they must have read this thread. Doorbell went about 15 minutes ago and their oldest son was there with a couple of plastic containers saying they'd got lots of curry and roti over tonight and would I like some.. and his mum was just on the way with rice and halwa (an amazing carrot based pudding for those that have never had it)

It's amazing, I'm so happy.. and it tastes even better than it smells..

Fish fingers back in freezer Grin

Makes a bloody lovely change to hear some heartwarming stories on here- often from immigrant families too - instead of all the negative shit that often abounds.
