To hate the trend of shops giving lower prices for ‘members’

SaturdayGiraffe · 06/06/2023 13:42

Just give us lower prices without forcing everyone to carry cards or download apps (that glitch/not scan/no wifi in store).

Just wasted 30min of lunchtime in Boots only to realise my physical card is at home, so I would be charged more. Logged into Boots site and the number isn’t even on there - “we keep the last 3 digits hidden”.

Amazon Prime wins again.

Go on tell me how much you all love carrying cards/downloading apps for £1 off some foot peel socks.

I don't know how something like this is so much of a challenge for most ordinary people in the UK. I carry my phone which has my bank cards on it and my Stocard app with all my cards. I go into Sainsbury and take a scanner and I zap my card ...easy. In Waitrose and Tesco I have to zap my scorecard to release a scanner. Job done. At M and S I zap my Sparks card at the checkout. I'm not hard up but appreciate the savings with these.

But it's a faff. Get your phone out, turn the screen on, navigate to the right app, find the right page, scan it.

Or, open purse that you are opening anyway to get card or cash, take out card.

What is easier, really?

I use the BA app for boarding passes, but a printed copy is actually easier. It's just the printing bit that isn't with our capricious printer and when away it's easier to use the app.

In this case it seems like tech for tech's sake in my view. A card is just fine.

Rinoachicken · 07/06/2023 16:25

I’ve got my nectar card on my phone but I must be doing something wrong as I never seem to get the lower member prices?

Ive tried scanning my nectar first before I scan my stuff at there checkout, and tried scanning my stuff and then the nectar card last. Price stays the same.

Does it only work if you use the scan as you shop app thing? Can never get a good enough signal in the store to use that!

DedicatedFolllowerofFashion · 07/06/2023 16:52

Elphame · 07/06/2023 14:23

Basically all I'm doing is breaking up their data collection and messing with their algorithms a bit.

Their computer thinks that I bought x products today all of which were nectar priced. It also has another shop that it can't actually associate with me so immediately the data they collect is incomplete and actually incorrect.

As I said - petty and pointless but I do all I can to give false information to marketing companies.

You are overthinking this 😂

I hate it too because my Tesco app ALWAYS logs me out because there’s no signal in the shop O often have to go stand by the front door to get signal to sign on for cheaper goods.

infuriating

I have this problem in my local Tesco. I've got around it by downloading the Stocard app. You can have all of your loyalty cards on the one app and weirdly it always works where I can't get other apps to!

Don't use the app then - use the hand held scanner which you will have activated?

How can it have passed you by, that a considerable number of people don't live their lives through a phone ?

All the people that don't have a smart phone, to start with - a lot more than you'd realise
Then those that do, but don't have it with them
That can't get signal
That are out of battery charge
That use phones that don't have the capacity for all the apps everyone wants you to download all the time
That don't do their banking on their phone
That struggle with technology, or struggle with the size of font on a phone

Phos · 06/06/2023 16:13

It doesn’t cost you anything to join and most places you can have a key fob or have a digital card on your phone. Even if not it’s no great hardship to put an extra card in my purse. So no, I don’t dislike it.

It's all very well if it's your local or semi-local shop. But if your nearest Tesco is 20 miles away but then you find yourself wanting to do a shop on holiday where the nearest shop is Tesco and you walk in to find everything is cheaper for members, it's annoying! Yes you can then sign up and get the discounts but....

I said most ordinary but of course you chose to ignore that.

Then carry the card. You snooze you loose. Don't moan about not getting a deal if you are not prepared to make a small effort.

Alloveragain3 · 08/06/2023 00:36

I've no issue with carrying the store cards and getting the lower prices. It's minimal effort and I don't care if they have my food shopping data. If anything, tailored ads and coupons are a plus for me.

However, I do care that my bloody English Tesco card didn't work when I went on holidays to Ireland. Grrr.

CheeseTouch · 08/06/2023 00:39

I hate it. So I stopped shopping there and get everything delivered from independent businesses.

Most people here are complaining about the structure of member/non-member pricing, not about not always being the ones benefitting from it.

But lame when the little plastic cards have been around for years.

As someone who has benefited from all the different points, vouchers, schemes, discounts , member prices etc over the years feeding a large family on a tight budget - for what I see as very little effort -

what do you hate about it @CheeseTouch ?

Rummikub · 08/06/2023 08:28

Especially the "membership" lunchtime meal deals!

agree with this. I think it’s really tight on sixth form/college students - theyre not likely to have a club card so they’ll spend more.

I dislike the members offer. I won’t buy it and go elsewhere if I can. I only carry my bank card with me, no purse no phone.

Rummikub · 08/06/2023 08:30

Bonus points are different to members prices.

bonus points I see as a perk and I can join if I want to.

Members prices during a col crisis seems like blackmail as pp said.

Don't worry about the students! /6th formers!

They'll have downloaded the app and signed up before they get to the end of the till queue!

Rummikub · 08/06/2023 08:51

I don’t know of any that have.

Free market. You have a choice, they have a choice. You just have to be organised.

I really don't understand how people have the time to get upset about things like this. I do have a Tesco Clubcard & the Lidl Plus app but not any of the others. If a shop is selling something at a price I don't want to pay I'll just buy it elsewhere. It's never occurred to me to get pissed off that others have downloaded an app I can't be bothered to.

I would hope that there's a way round the application process for those with learning disabilities, dementia, visual impairment, homelessness etc.

So long as everyone is able to get the card & savings then it is fair. You don't need a smartphone for a Tesco Clubcard.

The trouble with that is not everybody has all of the supermarkets near them or is able to order online, so the Mum on UC (for example), who might not have English as her first language is stuck with paying top whack at the Tesco Extra/Sainsbury's Local that's the only shop for miles - and has no Wifi signal in store so the app doesn't work even if she's got a cheap phone.

It's extremely exclusionary and specifically takes more money from those least able to afford it.

Moreover, it's actively discriminatory, as those labels are difficult/impossible for anybody with sight or learning disabilities to read and understand. I've only got mild age related changes and the text is really difficult to read without juggling reading glasses and peering at the shelves - something like cataracts or macular degeneration wouldn't be able to squint at them (or with normal age/physical disability, get close enough to labels to have a go in the first place).

Nope. Having them on your phone is easier.

I don’t want lots of different cards for different stores and have to carry them around. Especially since I don’t carry a purse around and just use my phone to pay.

Far easier to keep them in your Apple wallet and scan them at the same time as you scan your card with Apple Pay too.

brunettemic · 08/06/2023 09:37

Honestly, why do people get so worked up this stuff. If someone is offering me a reduced price for free and the only downside is I might get a junk email or bit of post I’m snapping their hand off. As for people complaining about the apps logging out just add the card to your phone wallet and it doesn’t happen.

Add it to you phone wallet, you don’t need to go to apps. I don’t even take a purse most of the time. Zero faff.

It's quite simply a marketing ploy.
