How much do you pay to rent a 3 bed house?

Just to make me feel better (or worse)! We are having to move (landlord selling) and will be going from paying £1300 to £1800 a month!

Bog standard, single bathroom, single reception room semi with on street parking as opposed to current property with garage, drive, en-suite and two reception rooms.

Absolutely nothing else cheaper. Any property advertised slightly cheaper is offered for more.

We are in a deprived, south eastern town with a large proportion of council housing which is now 50% privately owned.

Majority of salaries seem to be around £22-£25k.

Max housing benefit for a 3 bed is £1000 a month!

We’re not eligible for housing benefit/UC as we both work.

No holidays, new clothes, treats, or heating on and cheap beige food for us from now on so we can pay off landlord’s mortgage.

What a life.

The two bed house I rented for £500 a few years back is now back on the market for £2k. It's getting ridiculous.

thatcornishfeeling · 06/06/2023 10:15

It's the same here in Cornwall!

Theres a 3 bed house with barely any garden for £1800 a month near me. The photos of the house look so tired, dirty and neglected.

The salaries here are about £22000

We have some "good" employers here who pay absolute shit (about NMW) for professional jobs where they demand 5 years experience and a degree. (Seasalt and Frugi included)

Jobs in schools and at the local authority are the best paying jobs in this area...

Mid Kent. 3 beds (one tiny) 2 receptions, big garden, only one loo, which is in the bathroom downstairs. £1450 and that's about £100 or so less than similar locally.

I'd like something smaller and cheaper, as I'm now on my own, but the only places with flats are fancy new developments and 2 bed flats with a little balcony are 1500+, so nope.

Trying to decide on a cheaper area to move to, but everywhere has shot up in price. So wouldn't save much, and I'm happy here.

Op, £1800 is very steep. Some London rents in decent places are cheaper than that

I can only assume you are not from London. For £1,8k you can't find anything decent in The Big Smoke, I'm afraid. I am in Zone4 and just saw neighbours' pokey 1B flat (created dividing 3B house into 3 flats!) advertised for £1700!
Family homes go for £2.5-£3k in suburbs.

2k pcm to live in a shithole district of Bournemouth.
It's no life, but we are being made homeless now as the landlord is a prick, so just count yourself lucky to have a roof over your head.

I don't know what will happen to me and my kids and I'm sick with worry.

For a 3 bed house? I v much doubt that. We paid £1950 PCM for a 2 bed flat in a nice part of London, and that was 7 years ago now.

I didn’t say nice, I said decent part of London.
I own a house in Camberwell and one in Streatham . The rent in Streatham is £1700 and the rent in Plumstead is £1500.
Both properties are three bed semis

Zebedee55 · 06/06/2023 10:23

Chislehurst Kent here. Approx £3000 pcm for a 3 bed in a nice private road.

Approx £2000 pcm for 3 bed ex Council houses.

Totally insane.🙁

Lampzade · 06/06/2023 10:24

Camberwell not Plumstead

Chislehurst is an affluent area which is why the rents are so high.

thaisweetchill · 06/06/2023 10:25

I rent a house out for £775 PCM.

3 new terrace, large kitchen & living room. Two double beds and one single. Driveway parking and rear garden. This is in Staffordshire.

Camberwell not Plumstead

Yes, I know, but not everyone in Chislehurst is rich. Even Orpington, not so wealthy, is nearly as expensive.

I feel sorry for anyone having to rent privately.

that is crazy! I live in London and own a 2 bed flat. Its in zone 3 north london and is a 1930s purpose built 2 bed flat with a communal garden and pet friendly. My mortgage is £1020. It will probably increase to £1800 if mortgage interest rates are 8% and I was bemoaning it! I thought market rent is around £1800.

it is definitely not a below average 2 bed flat in London as it is in the catchment area of several good schools and on the cusp of several posh areas like Muswell Hill/Hampstead Garden Suburb so I can assume that the rent would be more than £1800 if that is the case.

Not anymore they're not. The combination of increased interest rates on mortgages and landlords selling due to the change in EPC ratings for rentals, mean that family-sized properties near to good schools are in very high demand. Rental prices are crazy pretty much everywhere in the South East at the moment, and for prospective tenants, the competition is fierce (rentals going before they have even gone on rightmove).

Willyoujustbequiet · 06/06/2023 10:29

About £600 for a 3 bed where I am

Can you move? If you both work you can easily afford to buy in other areas on those salaries. You can get a lovely 4 bed detached for under 200k

thatcornishfeeling · 06/06/2023 10:29

Also in Cornwall you can't even view a house to rent unless you earn 30 x the monthly rent.

1800 x 30 = £54000 (when our salaries are NMW!!)

☹️

So let’s just say there were no landlords and no rentals. Then where would you live ??

That is very exi! I live in an expensive town in the South east (Tunbridge Wells) and there are 3 beds available from £1400 up ...

LadyJ2023 · 06/06/2023 10:33

I wouldn't stay where rent was so extortionate. We pay 395 live in northumberland massive wrap around garden and drive, hills on one side, beach 15 min drive away. Lovely smaller school, lovely community, our kids love it since we moved from the city and I would never go back

AndIKnewYouMeantIt · 06/06/2023 10:36

Town about 8 miles from Bath, not affluent. £1100 a month.

AndIKnewYouMeantIt · 06/06/2023 10:37

Sorry, should say we don't rent but my in laws rent one out here!
