And conservative/ ‘modest’ clothing. Would you stare? Would you look twice?

context to follow :)

Well, no, I assume that your choice of clothing means you view other women as dressing immodestly. Since wearing those clothes are your way of complying with guidance on being modest.
I don't see any way to argue against that, tbh. It's fine for you to feel that way too, but I don't see why you deny it.

That is your assumption on what I think, you’ve not asked me for my opinion? So how can you make such a judgment? I’m afraid that your prejudice

What I wear says nothing about you, nor is that the intention. I dress this way because I’m a Muslim woman and even though it’s tough at times, I’d like to be known as such. That is the first part of the ayah that talks about covering, that they may be known as believing women

and for your second comment, no the fashion industry didn’t invent the term modest but it has been applied to a specific aesthetic

I have a handful of good friends in the Muslim community, yes

And, for me, the term is very judgemental. Calling it 'full cover' wouldn't offend me, as it's a description of what the clothes do, ie cover all of the body. Modest and immodest are judgements on the woman.

but some of the ‘modest’ clothes aren’t full cover though, Jewish ladies and Muslim ladies have different religious standards of modesty.

A Muslim lady’s garment should cover wrist to ankle but a Jewish lady (and the Jewish sisters who’ve commented, please correct me if I’m mistaken) she can wear a skirt below the knees and a 3/4 length sleeve but she can’t wear trousers (whereas the Muslim lady can). A Jewish lady can wear a wig but a Muslim lady cannot.

it doesn’t mean for a second that a Jewish lady thinks I’m immodest for wearing trousers or I think she is immodest for wearing a skirt to the knee.

for whatever reason modest is the term that has been appropriated by the fashion industry to describe a particular fashion choice or aesthetic. So I’ll use it to describe that aesthetic until the fashion industry changes their term for it. Maybe consider lobbying for that change as you feel so strongly about it. I do feel as a Muslim, we have to constantly change or adapt or diminish the things we believe in to be accepted, this feels like that.

Weighing in on the modest issue from an orthodox Jewish perspective. For me it isn't a feminist issue, as my husband also dresses what we term modestly. Long sleeved shirt and trousers, and a yarmulke. Modesty isn't a value judgment on others. We dress the way we dress because our bodies are for us and each other. Nobody else needs to see the contours of my waist and rear. Likewise we don't make physical contact with adults of the opposite sex outside immediate family. We don't see the need. It's not for everyone, but then not everyone is an orthodox Jew!

Not sure how you made that leap? One has from the adhnan to the next adhnan to perform their prayers, anytime during that time is considered fine. There is extra reward to perform it in jamaat (congregation) the time of which will vary mosque for mosque. Women are exempt from prayer during their menses

Ps did you enjoy the modest dresses and clothes that are abaya esque? Hope you learned something.

I would stare but only to see if I knew them! I'm a modern orthodox Jewish woman and wear a headscarf.

May I ask what style you wear your headscarf in? I'm just curious, no other reason. There is a strong Orthodox Jewish community near where I live but I think the ladies are mostly wearing wigs or hats...I don't really see scarves.

Thank you for explaining from a Jewish perspective, it’s the same for a Muslim, same for my husband (shorts below the knee in heat, t shirt at the beach) no tight clothes no skinny jeans etc, plus no gold, silk.

does Judaism have anything like the no gold or no silk for men? X

"Modest" is a marketing term. It's got a recognised meaning and it's an appealing word. It isn't intended as an opposite to anything else and it doesn't mean that anything less covered is "immodest". I see lots of clothing marketed as "sexy". Doesn't mean the modest stuff is "unattractive".

Are you seriously trying to police how often OP prays?

Her religion is between her and God, why are you questioning her?

I LOVE this, a non Muslim, policing a Muslim about how often and how ‘on time’ they pray. Honestly girl, you’re too much! 😂😂😂

learnt a lot the past few days haven’t you? a) that there are in fact lots and lots of abaya esque dresses and b) that one is permitted to finish whatever task they were doing before performing their prayer, it does not have to be at the very minute the adhnan sounds for the prayer. There is a window for prayer. The prayer time will also vary depending on what part of the country you are in. Also yesterday ‘asr didn’t begin at 5:20, it was 6:17. And finally women are exempt from prayer when on their periods or post childbirth.

Yes love, funny that, I know what I believe in and what time prayer time was yesterday, we have a handy dandy prayer time table (you tend to get given one a month at the mosque).

one of my fave things about you, it’s that you throw out all sorts of wild random statements and when someone actively proves you’re talking out of your buttocks, you just ignore it and don’t address that your earlier inaccurate comments. IRL you must be a joy to be around

I suspect @Tenacioustattle has a problem with Muslims which is why we see so many ‘aha gotcha’ style comments in her (?) posts.
