There are some areas where some people do have a better more morally right view than others though, surely we agree on that? Eg I presume most mumsnetters would agree that it is morally wrong that you might need the testimony of 2 women to be worth that of 1 man in a shariah court or that the Jehovah's witnesses' rule that you need two witnesses to child s ex ab use is morally wrong and appalling view despite being in the bible? There are objective rights and wrong and we are all free to say - you will burn in hell because you don't believe in a Christian or Muslim God or that there is no God and many religions are sexist and homophobic.

Are you seriously trying to explain abayas to Muslims?

I have met several fair skinned ladies who wear the headscarf so I wouldn't stare or do a double take, but I have always lived in very diverse cities.

Spendonsend · 05/06/2023 20:30

I live near a convent and a plymouth brethren meeting place. I see a lot of white women in modest clothing.
Although its different in style.

Oh dear, you've said the 'M' word. You'll now have to write a thesis on what you mean by modest clothing Wink

@Tenacioustattle just in case modanisa didn’t convince of a dress like that’s existence, here’s some from asos. Now some I wouldn’t wear because I don’t like patterns but they fit the abaya adjacent criteria

https://www.asos.com/asos-design/asos-design-high-neck-big-sleeve-jacquard-maxi-dress-in-butterfly-floral-print/prd/202935397?clr=butterfly-floral&colourWayId=202935398&SearchQuery=long+sleeve+maxi+dress

https://www.asos.com/asos-design/asos-design-maxi-smock-dress-with-cutwork-in-natural/prd/204196953?clr=natural&colourWayId=204196954&SearchQuery=long+sleeve+maxi+dress. - scarf here would cover up the cut outs and keyholes, alternatively a chest cover piece (you can get them in Muslim shops) would work

https://www.asos.com/trendyol/trendyol-long-sleeve-side-wrap-maxi-dress-in-khaki-satin/prd/204424154?clr=khaki&colourWayId=204424155&SearchQuery=long+sleeve+maxi+dress

one more for luck

well darling it’s not spam, one poster simply couldn’t fathom a long sleeve dress that wasn’t an abaya. Hopefully I’ve helped her.

and now to help you… imma is sort of a colloquial contraction of ‘I’m going to’. Any other slag that you need help with, feel free to PM me ;)

OP posts:
SureJanSure · 05/06/2023 23:18

'Imma' is US slang for 'I'm going to'.

I'm going to -> I'm gonna -> I'm 'onna

-> I'm 'a or imma

tunainatin · 05/06/2023 23:18

I'm white and wear a headscarf. I have done for a long time. I don't notice people staring anymore, but I suppose they still do sometimes. I have questioned whether I stood out more when I myself felt more self conscious. In those first few months/years I struggled to wear it in a way which felt natural to me, whereas now I'm very at home in what I wear and I think that comes across iyswim. Just keep on doing what you are doing, and know in your heart why you are doing it. Also remember that the stares may be interest or curiosity rather than anything religious.

Coolhwip · 05/06/2023 23:01

Well, you, it seems.

FierceBadIggi · 06/06/2023 09:21

I can't go along with the use of "modest" to describe the kind of clothing the OP is linking to. It's one particular definition of the word and is linked to a religion rather than a general idea of modesty - it by default labels other clothing choices as immodest
Feminists should obviously not be harassing anyone in the street or staring at them, but they are entitled to form and hold opinions about the cultural regulation of female behaviour, in all its forms, and usually that's going to be a pretty negative opinion.

loislovesstewie · 06/06/2023 09:26

I agree with @FierceBadIggi .It's also the labelling of clothes as modest that irritates me. I find it judgemental. If I wear t shirt and shorts am I immodest? I don't think so, but some will. I am speaking about all sorts of religion just to be clear.
Others will think I am judgemental because I believe that women are told what to do by men as part of a religion. And I clearly I don't get that.

Tooshyshyhushhushidoi · 06/06/2023 10:02

No it doesn’t mean anything about any other clothing. Its just a name applied by the fashion industry to a particular aesthetic that doesn’t show much skin. There is no value judgment here.

do skinny jeans imply all other jeans those who wear them are fat? Or active wear imply all other clothing is lazy wear?

tbh these comments read as just projecting your feelings, judgments and insecurities onto other women who dress a certain way

OP posts:
FierceBadIggi · 06/06/2023 10:06

Well, no, I assume that your choice of clothing means you view other women as dressing immodestly. Since wearing those clothes are your way of complying with guidance on being modest.
I don't see any way to argue against that, tbh. It's fine for you to feel that way too, but I don't see why you deny it.

PurpleChrayne · 06/06/2023 10:08

I would stare but only to see if I knew them! I'm a modern orthodox Jewish woman and wear a headscarf.

FierceBadIggi · 06/06/2023 10:09

The fashion industry did not "make up" the concept of modesty through clothing, the use of that term goes way back in religions.
