Given your previous posts on this thread, oddly I don’t believe you. You clearly have a problem with Muslims. You’ve demonstrated that for everyone to read on this thread

It's really laughable when people get clearly invested in something, to the point of researching it and trying to trip people up over it, and then try to save face by claiming they're totally indifferent about it.

Religion is far more believable than that.

I am coming back to add that this is your interpretation @Tooshyshyhushhushidoi of being a Muslim woman and that it does vary from person to person as it certainly does from country to country. eg your reference to not wearing gold. My experiences are the Middle East. I saw you said your background was Bangladeshi. It is often found that the more recent converts are the more stringent eg from Africa in the practices they adopt and the way women dress.

My apologies - I mixed you up with the AMA post.

DedicatedFolllowerofFashion · 06/06/2023 15:07

Same point though.

SerafinasGoose · 06/06/2023 15:07

Why would anyone stare? People can wear what they want.

IDontWantToBeAPie · 06/06/2023 15:21

No white people can be Muslim it's a religion not a race. Some Jewish and catholic women also cover their heads. Plus my grandmothers often did a la 1950s style.

I think they're due a style comeback tbh.

Argh, leave her alone. As OP pointed out pages ago, this isn't an AMA thread.

You are not even asking OP questions in good faith (pun unintended).

Yay, you’re back! I’ve missed your fun whacky ways

well I became Muslim many years ago, and wore the hijab part time, in peaks and troughs. Slow and steady wins the race, marathon not a sprint etc. Building up courage, and some of the shaking heads/ comments and stares put me off and shook my confidence

When we went to Spain for the first time in about 1971 our mother had us take black lace veils for when we went to mass (Catholics so we always went when abroad too) in case they were still covering heads there despite Vatican 2. In fact most people were just like in the UK - no head coverings in the church, but it illustrates the fact all the major religions curb women's rights much more than men's. Indeed when I went to Iran on business twice and had to wear the clothes etc I remember looking out on Kish Island at the beach through the window to see men in tiny tiny black speedos whilst every other woman was entirely in black - none of the very attention seeking ASOS clothes there - that would be drawing too much attention to the woman. Mind you Iran in theory very recently after the protests and death has supposedly started to allow women (wow) to show hair Ah for the days of the Shah before the revolution - a better time.

The muslim I know best who worked for me in the UK for 20 years by the way never covered up as many many don't., In fact it was almost become an act of rebellion to get more extreme by the younger ones to cover up more a kind of teenage rebellion which hopefully will pass.

Upthread someone posted how courageous the women refusing to wear hijabs are in Iran. I am in awe of their bravery.

The freedom to have this discussion, for OP to choose to wear a hijab and not be stoned to death should she have chosen not to, the choice for Orthodox Jewish women like me to reject traditional head-coverings and clothing, is what makes me so grateful to be living in the UK. If I was forced to cover my head or into a marriage against my will, there are people and organisations who will help me fight against such coercion . I want to be free to reject all but the cultural aspects of my religion, just as much as I want OP to follow her religion how she wants, and for all women to cover as much or as little of their bodies they wish.

I dont feel comfortable personally with the concept of men policing women’s clothing and behaviour but where a woman is happy to cover her hair and body as a signifier of her belief system and culture, I don’t feel I have the right to judge.

But it is for me, because I’ve decided it is for me. It is my jihad, my struggle.

just because something is difficult, doesn’t mean you give it up, just means it’s worth doing. Nothing worth having comes easy

I'm a white woman. Muslim woman. I've wore headscarf occasionally to events/mosque and not noticed anyone staring.

I hope to wear the headscarf one day full time.

Going to read this thread!

notacooldad · 06/06/2023 16:29

I probably did years ago when it wasn't that common in my town. However, although it isn't something I see every day it isn't unusual anymore.
