We need to start talking about population decline

The first signs of it are starting to show in the UK, with primary school closures. Secondary school closures will follow.

Italy is a few years ahead of us.

Japan shows where every country is headed - towards a crisis where they are on the brink of being unable to maintain social functions.

And yet there are still people who think that we have a problem with overpopulation. It’s the opposite.

The school with one pupil: how falling birthrates are killing village primaries

Four generations of Ruby Booker’s family have been educated at Skelton Newby Hall, an idyllic village primary school in North Yorkshire. It was the autumn of 194

Well you won't care, none of us will because we'll be wiped out!

There is absolutely no point to humans, or to any life. We are all simply just here.

For those who are so concerned about their children...I not sure why you would bring children into the world in the first place. Your decision though.

I care about climate but kind of agree with this.

Which is exactly why the 'why did you have children if you care about the planet' argument is such rubbish. The biggest reason that I care is that I have stakes in it.

(Although I do care about the animals and plants but, you know)

GCalltheway · 06/06/2023 07:44

Quite frankly I would much rather provide a healthy sustainable planet that is bearable for my children than over populate to ‘support’ the wealthy boomers and sink our children’s future. Some people are so selfish!

They have had a great life - booming property prices and endless pension pots where is the sense of social responsibility to the young and to our incredible planet that supports us all to live?

As long as there is someone to do their bidding and wipe their arse they actually couldn’t care less the legacy they are leaving behind. It’s disgusting.

Fair point, but what are you doing to turn this around? I feel it's easy to blame boomers for everything when actually we are all contributing to the destruction of the planet

I don’t need to list what I am doing, I am
more than comfortable with my efforts. We are massively overpopulated as it is. It is completely unsustainable, so I find it staggering anyone should encourage it. Literally mind blowing.

My mother is more evangelical about recycling and caring for the world than I am even. What a very odd intrusive question.

People who’ve chosen not to have children pretend that the planet is the reason are just being goady. Do you also live in a shack with no electricity? I thought not. You are living your life in the best way you can meeting your wants and needs. If the planet is so awful then again, why are you still here? Because actually life is still worth it for many of us.

It’s not my parents per se but the generational disregard for the young that bothers me. They are by far the most fortunate, and yet they still continue to selfishly put themselves first every time.

AlfietheSchnauzer · 06/06/2023 08:47

OP, you he reason schools are closing is because there's too many properties in those villages which are being bought & turned into AirBnBs! Meaning local families are being priced out and are having to move elsewhere!

We are most definitely not under populated! This country is absolutely bursting at the seams! We are hugely, hugely overpopulated (not against immigration before anyone accuses me of getting at that, there's many reasons why we're overpopulated). Where on earth have you got this nonsense from?!

@GCalltheway but I think that most, if not all of us put ourselves and our families first, and above others. I am not saying that it's a bad thing - it's just a human thing.

Yes there are boomers who are selfish. However there are people from all generations who are selfish. Some of the crap that you see on Tiktok etc has quite young people showing off their latest fast fashion, or those stupid order packing videos that just show plastic upon plastic upon plastic. How many of you have bought LOL dolls or similar for your kids? How many of you have more than 2 children? Every generation has selfish people.

My grandparents generation were the heroes. They lived frugally after the war, certainly my grandparents saved and saved to leave us something behind. I just don’t see that in the boomers at all. Quite the opposite. I don’t have much respect for those that throw away any kind of legacy to their children. Not a fan, no.
They retired super early on money they didn’t earn, on triple lock gold plated pensions and an abundance of free prescriptions, bus passes etc etc whilst young families are homeless at food banks taxed to the bloody eyeballs . It needs to be addressed by the government policy makers and fast. It is a national disgrace.

They should take the opportunities of course, and they have, but to continue to rinse the country with all of their expensive perks and benefits is outrageous when so many are so wealthy. The fuel top ups, prescription s, bus passes and all the rest should be restricted to those that need it - means tested - it is grotesque that millionaires benefit from all of this whilst nurses are going to food banks and can’t afford to heat their homes.

Pensioners and the retired collective should be means tested like everyone else and pay their way. I have no problem supporting those genuinely struggling, but I can not support millionaire top ups when there is so much suffering. We need a spare bedroom tax too.

Is that the new Labour campaign so we can rejoin? Try and brainwash us into believing we are not sinking already under the weight of the population explosion as it is. It is a form of gas lighting.

Maybe op lives in the Scottish isles on a sheep farm with twenty other people in totality.

🤷‍♀️I don’t see this at all. I’ve been greatly supported by the older generation and everyone I know worked really hard to build a good life for themselves and their families.

So having enjoyed the ‘good life’ you are happy for quality of life and living standards to be stripped away for the young with over population?

Its already happening.

I am the young. I don’t have the anger towards the older generation that you seem to have and I haven’t experienced them as selfish. That’s what I was saying.

I’d like to see policies and actions that promoted the maximum human flourishing, for all members of our species. That’s what this whole thread is about!

Maximum human flourishing???!! 🙄🙄

Yes, why not? I doubt there are many people who would really want to increase despair and unhappiness, despite some of the misanthropic pronouncements on here.
