Rainbows everywhere 🌈

Maybe I am being unreasonable. Not sure.

But I clicked on my linkedIn profile today and two massive rainbows stuck out at me! Looks like two of my previous workplaces have changed their logos to the rainbow flag.

Now, I'm in support of individuals wearing rainbow badges if they want to publically show they are allies of LGBTQ+ Even a few colleagues have put the rainbow on their email signature. That's cool with me.

But I don't know how I feel about whole workplaces replacing their company logo with a rainbow? Seems like rainbows are taking over the world.

I guess maybe it doesn't matter but I can't help but think it's a bit weird that whole institutions are now becoming activists and replacing their identity with rainbows which to me, makes a statement?

Not sure whether and what I'm being unreasonable about, but just wondered other people's thoughts really?

LGBT acceptance is taking over the world?

Can't say that upsets me in the slightest.

Was it better when whole institutions were discriminatory based on things like sexual orientation?

FlipFlopsInMyCar · 01/06/2023 15:33

One of the institutions that now has a rainbow logo is a university, and I wondered if it's a response from them, to the trans issues of late, and what happened in Oxford(?) Hence my wondering that it is making a political statement.

Would you prefer uganda,laws ?

The only issue I have with this is that it's quite frankly just pr for most of these companies. No actual care

It's good that there is acceptance of LGBT. But what about the purpose of the institutions? A university is not the LGBT society. A bank is not an LGBT club. What's happened to their own identity and purpose?

This has been happening for years hasn’t it, with June being Pride Month.

I broadly acknowledge that virtually all organisations in existence hold political and ideological views as part of their company culture, and have the right to express them. In turn, I as a consumer or service used can choose to find a company which has different political and ideological views as part of their company culture if I feel thy he align more closely with my own.

There is a middle ground, you know.Hmm

MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 01/06/2023 15:35

It's pride month isn't it? So they'll all revert to their usual logos again and forget about it for another year.

Halftermdaysathome · 01/06/2023 15:35

I think they mean so many things though. Like supporting key workers, LGBT etc, some Christians use it and its also quite a nice emoji to look at (well, I love all colours!)

Sirzy · 01/06/2023 15:36

June is pride month. It’s companies ways of trying to publically show they are accepting of people. Hopefully it’s also reflective of how they actually work

ThomasinaLivesHere · 01/06/2023 15:36

They do it every June don’t they? I can’t say it bothers me. Although I do think it’s because many businesses want to portray an imagine and don’t care that much about gay rights. I mean are these multinationals putting up rainbows in countries that aren’t as liberal on this issue as the west? My guess is no.

Really not understanding your point. An organisation using a flag logo to show support isn't turning it into an 'LGBT' club.
Why are you suggesting their values were and should be different to this?
It hardly removes a bank or universities 'purpose' because they openly support LGBT users/collegues/clients.

It does actually!!! I thought I might be being unreasonable, just something didn't sit right! Like the companies had lost their identity which was being replaced by a rainbow and all that is saying (which is good stuff, it's just it's only one issue so not sure why it's taking presidence (over say, BLM or woman's rights or North Korea or cost of living crisis or the Russia war or etc...)

Also universities are hardly known for being a-political, so its a weird comment really.

Are they also accepting of their GC customers?

Nothing in between then?

Sissynova · 01/06/2023 15:38

just something didn't sit right! Like the companies had lost their identity

Listen to yourself! Why on earth has a company lost their identity because they want to show support for the LGBT community?
Unless their identity was previously raging discrimination.

TidyDancer · 01/06/2023 15:39

The problem for me is that these companies do it only for virtue signalling purposes. And also that they use the so-called progress flag which is not at all progressive in real terms.

I just roll my eyes at the likes of premier inn who do this now which is unfortunate.

CountZacular · 01/06/2023 15:39

I would be a more willing to accept companies shoving rainbows on their logos and doors when they show the same level of virtual signalling support to disabilities.

Pineapplemonkey · 01/06/2023 15:39

It's called rainbow washing and is just companies jumping on a bandwagon. They aren't doing anything other changing a logo, requires absolutely no effort and costs them nothing.

www.theurbanlist.com/a-list/rainbow-washing

It makes me think less of a company and that they must have poor marketing people working for them

TipsySquirrel · 01/06/2023 15:40

It’s just virtue signalling. It’s the default of comms teams to turn the logo to a rainbow and put a social media post about their one openly gay colleague. Same as posting their handful of women on IWD or any other diversity celebration. It doesn’t actually mean they’re respecting the views of those people.

My old work did this and I put a complaint in about sexist behaviour and language and was close to putting in a case for maternity discrimination. I can’t comment on if they are actually accepting of LGBT people but I know they did the same for autism awareness but weren’t willing to put reasonable measures in place for someone with autism. Maybe I’m just jaded by my previous experience but I feel like those that do the social media posts are usually the worst for making provisions for the people they are talking about.

Halftermdaysathome · 01/06/2023 15:41

I'm also pretty sure that when I had a miscarriage a decade ago - the rainbow was used back then too?

I didn't realise it was pride month.

Wish I could have worded a post this well - exactly my thoughts!
