Would you let your 4 year old wear a bare midriff top to nursery?

Received a top and short set from a bag of hand me down clothes. It's aged 3-4. My daughter loves it, it's waterproof material so it's great for water play in the garden. Nursery is having a water play day tomorrow and my daughter is desperate to wear it. It sits right above the belly button and has cold shoulders as well.
Would you send your daughter to nursery in it or would it raise a few eyebrows? I'm thinking it may be more beach wear but I have no idea. I may be overthinking but I'd love some more opinions.

Well obviously not that top, but shoulders are hardly offensive. I'm a Senior Manager and have worked in multiple industries, construction, health, finance etc that's never been an issue. I do vaguely remember in my very first job in an accountants office in my early 20s I was told by someone retiring about not showing my shoulders, that was about 20 years ago. I did anyway, and it didn't cause a stir.

Oh you don't wear lemons and strawberries on your top? 😂 Even tho Hannah clearly thinks you work in some den of iniquity with your brazen hussy bare shoulders. I bet you flash your ankles too 😉

DiscoBeat · 04/06/2023 01:11

Yes, but over a long sleeves/normal length t shirt. She'd still have the thrill of wearing it, but with the practicalities.

DiscoBeat · 04/06/2023 01:13

(NB only because she already loves it - if she hadn't seen it I wouldn't bother at all)

DiscoBeat · 04/06/2023 01:13

No, unless she’s at the beach.
Especially at the beach - too much sun!

Would Princess Charlotte wear that top?

LolaSmiles · 04/06/2023 09:04

Society needs to stop blaming women for (predominantly) men's revolting behaviour
I entirely agree.
The feminist in me also thinks we should be asking why boys and girls are socialised so differently in terms of their clothing, and why it's mainly girls clothing that has chunks missing out of it, cut shorter, cut tighter etc.
Why is it that girls are told that's what's pretty for a girl and if these clothes are so practical and fun and nothing about socialising girls into stereotypes from a young age, why don't we see lots of boy lines pushing the same standards?

Who knows what she'd be wearing having a water day at school.

What a stupid comment.

Dear God is your standards for daily wear based on an 8 year old?

And tbf, if she got her hands on it, probably at ops daughters age. Kids have zero taste.

Next time you get dressed I want you to think, WWPCW? What would Princess Charlotte wear?

DogOutInTheDark · 04/06/2023 11:10

I'd put her in it if she loves it, but put a long sleeve tucked-in top, or a long sleeve body/baby-grow type thing underneath

Ericaequites · 04/06/2023 19:10

It’s a good standard for children’s clothing.

LolaSmiles · 04/06/2023 19:27

I'm not sure it is because if you apply the same logic to boys'clothing then trousers aren't accessible for any young boy under 7, or whatever age the royals start allowing trousers.

My nursery isn't judgey so yes I would, if they wanted to wear it. What is the harm? I think midriff is fine. I draw the line at some bumcheek skimming shorts I just got in a hand me down bag. Straight in the rag bag!

Sun damage?!

There's more photos of her dressed like a little girl who can run around and have fun, but until recently she's very much dressed for the job - walk around and look cute. And she does. But lots of people want more for their daughters.

Similarly, I wouldn't be dressing my boys in shorts through winter, altho I assume you're also advocating that style.

What material is it as it doesn't look waterproof?

I personally wouldn't let my 4 year old wear it - probably because i don't like the top.

My children wear lots of outfits i don't like but, they are older now but, at 4 years i wouldn't but, each to their own.

This thread has descended into madness 😂

AlanJohnsonsBeemer · 04/06/2023 19:56

I wouldn’t have let DD wear that at that age, she was head to toe in sensible, cute Boden and I would have worried we would be judged

It was bloody ridiculous, she would have loved that and now goes out with much less on, regardless of what anyone else says or thinks.

My only concern would the sun cream issue

EscapeRoomToTheSun · 04/06/2023 20:27

You don't put suncream on your toddler?
