Why does DH suddenly smell?

PinkMonday · 31/05/2023 08:32

Help! My DH stinks but I don't know why and I'm desperate for suggestions. He has a bath every evening, cleans his teeth, flosses, clean clothes but he still smells. I change our bedsheets once a week.

It's a really weird smell. Kind of like baby drool. I'm not pregnant so it's not like I am suddenly sensitive to smells.

It's only started happening in the last 2 weeks I think. He said he can even smell it on himself too.

I even started washing his back to make sure he's 100% clean but I notice by the morning he stinks again!

Faith in Nature has a tea tree oil shampoo and body wash with antibacterial properties. Might be worth a try.

Aldo I’d wash bed linen and his towels and clothes separately and add some Dettol

Rub some alcohol or Dettol on the headrest in his car

Belly button fungus can stink check in there ?

Bassetlover · 31/05/2023 11:04

He needs a GP visit, this can be indicative of a health problem.

MinxieMax · 31/05/2023 11:07

What is wrong with Dove soap bar? I only use that and think it's great. Is it going to make me ill or what 😉

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 31/05/2023 11:10

Second the tea tree soap. Brilliant for cleansing the skin properly.

Also get rid of his pillow and buy a new one. Apparently they should be replaced every 2 years anyway.

A tea tree shampoo as well so he can give his scalp and neck a good clean as well.

Sandalwood is brilliant as well however the sandalwood in most products is so diluted it's probably more scent than active essential oil.

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 31/05/2023 11:10

@MinxieMax - dove soap, while lovely in the skin, isn't really all that deep cleansing.

TheInterceptor · 31/05/2023 11:12

Does he drink OP?

Dh is suddenly started smelling sort of sour. Mainly on his face. Is it a sour smell?

@era if it's his breath he needs to get his renal function checked. It's a strong sour smell. Suggest you do this urgently as the two times i have experienced that smell it been family in renal failure

Gcsunnyside23 · 31/05/2023 11:16

Id try a bacterial body wash and see if it helps. Other than that a check in with his GP would be good to be reassured it's nothing else

Lastarse · 31/05/2023 11:16

Reading this has given me some enlightenment - I dated an older fella who smelled like this even a short while after a shower. He was definitely clean and had nothing wrong with him. I know now he just smelled like an aul fella 🤪
disclaimer - I’m older now and probably smell the same.

VestaTilley · 31/05/2023 11:18

He should go to the GP and ask for a full suite of blood tests.

ForTheSakeOfThePenguin · 31/05/2023 11:19

Another vote for skin fungal infection. It is not that bad, it may be easily resolved in some cases by changing the soap or shower gel he uses and a good scrub for a few days.

It has been my mother’s favourite for decades. I have found that every time she visits I get some pink bacteria growing on the shower tray and the drain clogs. It’s just like putting hand cream down the drain! She doesn’t smell though…

BagLadyHere · 31/05/2023 11:23

When did you last change your mattress? Yes, as pp said, get new pillows.

ForTheSakeOfThePenguin · 31/05/2023 11:23

Avoid anti bacterial soaps, believe it or not, we have friendly bacteria growing on it which is killed by antibacterial soaps and then leave the door open to the nasty bacteria to overpopulate.

Thepleasureofyourcompany · 31/05/2023 11:24

All soaps are antibacterial

The onset of Diabetes or Parkinsons can change body odour.

This. Plus blood cancers can do the same.

Any night sweats @PinkMonday ? Could be mild like perspiration in the early stages.

Strawberrypicnic · 31/05/2023 11:25

Ear infection?

I've had 3 babies and I have absolutely no clue what baby drool supposedly smells like 🤷‍♀️ 😂

Same here😂 I'm trying so hard to picture baby drool smell

Rewis · 31/05/2023 11:34

Unmanaged diabetes can cause a smell. Hormone changes etc.

NYE2023 · 31/05/2023 11:39

It sounds like an unusual MOT not to include blood tests . GPS offer >40s tests which usually include diabetes / cholesterol / thyroid / blood counts/ liver function tests etc . We’ve had medical for life insurance and always had blood tests for these too. Hope you get some answers soon

I did this with mine (who showers and washes hair daily) and it was coming from his head/back of neck. He's swapped to a medicated shampoo that's improved it but can still smell it sometimes. I've also noticed the same smell on my dad who also showers every day! Deffo a middle aged man thing.

@PinkMonday have a read about persimmon soap for the oily middle -aged hormonal smell. I'd never heard if it until I read a thread on here. Loads of people recommended it for this very thing. Of course it's still important to have investigations as you've said, but this may help take care of the smell in the meantime.

Copied from Google:
Japanese persimmon is known for its anti-odor properties. This purifying and deodorizing ingredient eliminates odors associated with hormonal imbalances, menopause and nonenal odor that is often associated with aging.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 31/05/2023 11:45

I don’t want to be alarmist, but my Dsis said her dh started smelling oddly sour before he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He was quite a bit older than 40 though, early or mid 60s IIRC. (He’s still here and doing pretty well at maybe 78 now.)

Changechangechanging · 31/05/2023 12:00

Sounds like he needs to go to his GP, OP and ask for a blood test to rule out diabetes as a minimum.
