Why does DH suddenly smell?

Help! My DH stinks but I don't know why and I'm desperate for suggestions. He has a bath every evening, cleans his teeth, flosses, clean clothes but he still smells. I change our bedsheets once a week.

It's a really weird smell. Kind of like baby drool. I'm not pregnant so it's not like I am suddenly sensitive to smells.

It's only started happening in the last 2 weeks I think. He said he can even smell it on himself too.

I even started washing his back to make sure he's 100% clean but I notice by the morning he stinks again!

Yeast infection? On his feet, his scalp, in his mouth?

Dental infection? Sinus infection?

Any itching, soreness, dry skin, wet skin patches, unusual snot, snoring, excess sweating? Is he yellow toned? Peeing normally?

Rocketpants50 · 31/05/2023 08:46

Definitely follow up with gp if a change of smell, can be an indicator of diabetes or other conditions.

DeathBecomesHer · 31/05/2023 08:46

Any new deodorant or body spray?

I got the new Alien Goddess perfume, its a vanillay smell but after a while it stinks of BO, even my daughter commented on it, I have had to bin it, its awful and it cost bloody £80😐

FirstBirthday · 31/05/2023 08:47

Agree with other posters - he needs to report the smell to his GP and have some tests. My first thought it diabetes.

Has he been checked for Parkinson's? I did read somewhere that a woman noticed her husbands smell changed and this was the reason. She did have a heightened sense of smell though

This is the kind of thing I am worried about. Its all of a sudden and its so strong. We can both smell him through clothes. I was hoping there would be a simple thing I was missing but I think it's a trip to the doctors unfortunately.

Ditch the Dove soap and use a bar of proper soap ,can make all the difference.

Will be interesting to see if the doc can smell it too

TomatoSandwiches · 31/05/2023 08:50

He really does need a comprehensive blood test.

Groutyonehereagain · 31/05/2023 08:52

My first thought was Parkinson’s Disease. Apparently before any onset of the disease a person’s smell changes.

Tots678 · 31/05/2023 09:00

Use the orange coal tar soap. Though I don't think it's got coal tar in it now - just smells of it.
There's no tests for parkinsons unless he has tremble in his hand.
Is he stressed?

Dodo2023 · 31/05/2023 09:03

As you get older you do smell more it’s just ageing and decay.

Definitely get some blood tests though.

He’s 40!!

GiveupHQ · 31/05/2023 09:05

It’s too much of a coincidence to me

you think he smells of baby drool and you have a 6 month old baby who is presumably drooling a lot

allthewoes · 31/05/2023 09:06

How old is he? I noticed my husband started to smell when he was mid forties and apparently it's a thing. It comes from the oils at the back of their neck. This is an article about it - middle aged oily odour.

I've had 3 babies and I have absolutely no clue what baby drool supposedly smells like 🤷‍♀️ 😂

Fucking hell!! He’s 40….and I can’t say I know or have ever known of people smell just die to getting older…possibly declining personal care, but not “age and decay”. Jesus wept

Me neither but if you thought your husband smelt of baby drool and you had a teething 6month old… would you not think….

Has he changed his diet

He’s 40!!

This is what I read recently.

‘However, older people do smell differently as they age. At about age 40, the body subtly changes the way omega-7 unsaturated fatty acids on the skin are degraded. These acids get exposed to the air and create a compound called “nonenal.” Nonenal most likely gets produced due to hormone imbalances. These imbalances occur as people age, resulting in more lipid acid. Additionally, our skin’s natural antioxidant protection declines and results in great oxidation of lipid acid. Nonenal is then produced when lipid acid is oxidized, creating this “old people smell.” Furthermore, chronic illnesses and diseases such as diabetes, uremia, eczema, and dermatitis can add to the smell.’

HeidiUpTheMountain · 31/05/2023 09:09

Dove soap isn’t soap! Get a plain bar of some neutral soap - the cheap ones have the least in them. Morrisons do an unscented one in a four pack for less than a pound. I’d try that first, before going back to the doctor.

stairgates · 31/05/2023 09:09

Is he a drinker?

NOTANUM · 31/05/2023 09:09

Is all the family laundry being washed together? A friend’s DH complained he was going to work smelling faintly of baby sick due to washing white shirts with babygrows, muslins etc.

It's the most logical conclusion, but a blood test won't hurt.

peacelemon · 31/05/2023 09:10

Check his armpits. Does he have a fungal infection?
