not to share my table at outdoor cafe

1000 replies

ShirleyEyeRosebud · 29/05/2023 10:26

Went to my favourite cafe with my lovely dog for a relaxing Sunday morning brunch fry up.
All the tables were occupied, so we stood feeling a bit self-conscious waiting for about 20 minutes for a table to become free. In the meantime, a kind couple did ask if I wanted to share their table, but I didn’t want to disturb their relaxing morning so I said thanks for the offer but it’s ok.
So, eventually a table became free so I left my bag there to reserve it and went inside the cafe with the hound to order. When I was queuing up to order a woman asked if I had finished with my table so I said no I have just arrived. She then said are there many of you (obviously not) or can we share your table?
I said Sorry I have been waiting for a table and I would rather have it to myself.

Good idea. I should get out more. I think I'll go out for lunch tomorrow. Find a nice picnic bench in a cafe to have for myself 👍

Elevel · 31/05/2023 23:25

I love how @AnarchoTyrannosaurus just DGAF (in a good way)!

Surely the point of AIBU is the poll, can't really say that more replies are saying YABU so that wins - a lot of people will read, vote and not post. I usually do - especially if the thread descends into a bunfight.

I believe 55% of people looking for a picnic table may do the same

I'll be sure to come look for you, with my 5 friends, and will 100% be sitting by you on that PUBLIC BENCH. 😂

Ooh, it might be crowded out there then. I'd better leave early to secure that picnic table.

Depends on local culture. I'm an Indian born in Britain and while it seems to be ok there I wouldn't expect it in Britain. We value personal space and life is too short. We all hate each other

At LAST you agree! About time. Well done! You have finally come to terms with what the majority of posters on here are saying. It IS selfish!

I'll be the one with the fake moustache, a bowler hat and a bouquet of flowers 👍 You'll spot me easily.

Although obviously seating in cafes are not technically public benches. But no matter.

ilovesooty · 31/05/2023 23:31

I suspect some of the OP's cheerleaders have superglued themselves to the thread and won't be able to detach themselves to sit on a picnic bench, whether alone or with anyone else. They're probably being fed intravenously in case they miss anything.

There have been a few (one in particular) who seems to have been VERY active on this thread - apart from the OP of course.

Must be lovely to have nothing else to do. Smile

It's interesting that you're only targeting single people. Clearly you think a couple occupying a bench is fair dos.

It's interesting (hmmm!) that you should make such random statements based on absolutely no relevance or evidence whatsoever?!
I think you will find that the reason I appear to be 'targeting' 'single people is that the OP is a 'single person' which if I'm not mistaken is the subject of debate here?!
Secondly, as I made no reference AT ALL to whether or not I approve of a couple solely occupying a bench how on earth did you jump to the conclusion that I would think this was 'fair do's'?!
I have no problem with critisism or questioning of my opinion but honestly, resorting to making stuff up just to have something to say is pretty desperate and if you don't mind me saying so, rather pointless?! 😏

It was a democratic vote.

So was the damn brexit referendum and look where that got us!! I would have thought that would be evidence enough that a 'majority' outcome is not always the right or best one? 😱
The outcome here simply indicates that 55% of people voting surprisingly don't seem to know the difference between a TABLE and a PICNIC BENCH and obviously aren't aware of the generally accepted etiquette and protocols expected around both of those forms of seating?! 😳
A person expecting to be allowed who thinks it's acceptable to solely occupy a 6 seater picnic bench while they leisurely eat their lunch in peaceful uninterrupted solitude, while others perhaps need a seat, is simply an entitled and blinkered, self centred person of which there sadly seems to be many of these days? 🙄😪

The figures do not lie, so I have the Mumsnet mandate to occupy said bench on my own, with or without trusty hound.

I’m wondering if photographic evidence of the offending benches might help the minority 45% see the error of their ways?

I will be returning to the scene of the crime this weekend so I’ll see what I can do.

What about the “entitled and blinkered, self centred” people who think it acceptable to disturb my peaceful lunch rather than waiting their turn for a table?
