Vaping in the cinema

Wizzbangfizz · 27/05/2023 20:19

Took DDs to the cinema this afternoon to see The Little Mermaid, every 10 mins or so got definite blasts of vape (I do it occasionally so know the smell) from somewhere behind me - turned round a couple of times but couldn’t see who it was and didn’t feel like I could report it either. WTF is wrong with people - surely vaping is classed same as smoking - you wouldn’t spark up in the cinema would you?! Makes me really mad, cinema full of little kids - who would do that?!

Ahh.. yes, illegal, untested vapes.

I do vape, I wouldn't indoors somewhere like the cinema because yep, people can be allergic (I have a friend who is allergic to the PG in it!) and it is just rude.

However it is irritating that stories like the above rapidly turn from 'illegal untested cheap vapes aimed at children are discovered to have nasty chemicals in them' to 'all vapes have nasty chemicals in them'. It is not the case - vape juices HAVE to be tested here in the UK and you can't (as a shop or supplier) even mix two tested flavours together and sell that... the mix would still have to be tested again!

I'd be pretty fucked off if someone confiscated my switched off, put away £60 box mod + £30 tank because vaping isn't permitted in a venue though! Vapings fine on my way to and from the venue!

@WiddlinDiddlin

I'm surprised you vape.

im going to ask a few questions, but obviously if you don't want to answer just ignore me 🤣

Did you start vaping to stop smoking?

How long have you been vaping?

When you started, did you intend to just use it to stop smoking, then stop vaping?

Do you intend to stop vaping?

what keeps you vaping? (Taste/nicotine/having something to hold/do?)

Maybe they could ban disposable vapes? Fewer children would be enticed into it, if they had to spend that much money on a unit like yours. Maybe some adults to?

we need some better campaigns aimed at children, so they know what's in them & how it affects their bodies.

I have a colleague who vapes in meetings. He holds it in his hand like dock workers do with a cigarette to hide it from the boss, except it steams up and he looks like he's sat in a volcano, just pretending we all can't see it. By the end of the meeting we are all sat in a room that is humid and stinks of artificial strawberry.

@Hairbrushhandle is your Boss on teams or something?

Someone needs to tell them!

ThirstyThursday · 28/05/2023 07:34

@Hairbrushhandle sorry just read your other posts. It's not too late, I'd tell the 'Boss' he's trying to hide it from, even if he's not a direct report.

Did a vape write this

😂😂 Someone desperate for vapes for sure.

No it's got to that point where no one said anything quick enough and now it's just awkward. A bit like when you're talking to someone with something in their teeth. There's a window, and we've missed it. Were a matrix organisation so he has no manager to point it out and no one else wants to look 'difficult'.

oh, just address the elephant in the room.

‘Clive, we’ve all been quietly putting up with this for some time now, but it’s not OK that you sit through meetings vaping. Please stop. It’s not acceptable.’

If you don’t feel you can do this, talk to his manager about it.

If the manager is useless, or you don’t feel you can do that, you need to speak to HR about the vaping and the fear of speaking up about it.

Personally i dont see an issue with it as its not like its actual cigarette smoke, people dont seem to know the difference.
I find people farting in the cinema far more offensive. So rude.

@ThirstyThursday nope I don't think there's other things I don't smell but obviously there could be because I wouldn't notice them 🤣 weed is one I can always smell now that stinks!

GladysHeeler · 28/05/2023 08:32

Lots of people managed to stop smoking cigarettes via vaping which is a good thing no? But go ahead and belittle them as saddos sucking on their sad sticks 🙄 if it makes you feel better.

Australia have decided that this isn't the case and that vaping is actually encouraging more young people to smoke than it's helping stop smoking and are making (or have made, I'm not sure) vapes prescription only.

They have always been, as a country, ahead of the game with regards to stopping people smoking. When I was in Sydney in the early 2000s smoking was already banned indoors then, a good five or six years before it was in the UK. And they had the plain packaging first with the diseased photos on.

Wizzbangfizz · 28/05/2023 09:37

For those asking why I vape - ex smoker and whilst I’ve not smoked a real cig in years when I’ve had a few drinks I still get the cravings so occasionally buy a disposable on a night out. However not sure why it is relevant. I would avoid doing it in an anti social way. Regret not reporting it to staff!

@Tinktravels

i thought about saying you wouldn't smell what you don't smell, but figured with conversations over the years you know if there were things others smell that you don't.

it's utterly bizarre you don't smell cigarette smoke, you're lucky though it's vile.

I’ve stopped going to the cinema altogether. I used to love taking my kids to the cinema, but the antisocial behaviour in our local cinema has got out of hand in the last couple of years. Time before last there was a group of teenagers talking loudly all through the movie, constantly swapping seats, mucking around, throwing popcorn at each other, girls sitting on boys laps making out (this was in a kids movie!) Someone reported it to staff and they got one warning but just carried on as soon as the staff left. The next time we went to the cinema a family was letting their toddlers run up and down the aisle shouting, laughing, disrupting the movie for everyone….. I went out to complain but they didn’t do anything about it.
I don’t know what is happening but I’ve definitely noticed a huge increase in people’s rude and selfish behaviour in public spaces in the last few years.

Wizzbangfizz · 28/05/2023 10:48

@3girls1boy1puppy i agree people have definitely gotten less considerate in cinemas - the talking thing infuriates me - stay at home. If it is little ones at a kids movie that is ok but adults - just beyond selfish! And it isn’t exactly a cheap outing these days either

Vaping can be fun but the last thing I'd want is someone's hot flavoured breath in my face, whether that be tobacco or blue ice berry. Not appropriate indoors.

lap90 · 28/05/2023 12:55

You should have reported it.
In fact, you should still report it.
So many people continue to vape in places where it is banned. Saw a teenager vaping earlier this week on the tube and yesterday on the train there was the threat to throw anyone off the train doing it.

@GladysHeeler
Not point of the thread but
Ireland was actually the first country in the world to ban via legislation smoking indoors & in workplaces

Would love to see more control on the vapes though

Last time I went to the cinema the staff had night vision goggles on so they would've been able to see who it was.

Happy to!

Started it as an alternative to smoking as smoking was stupid money and I'd been dx with a heart condition so also an even more monumentally stupid thing to do.

It let me quit smoking entirely within days, because of course I have swapped the physical habit of holding a fag in one hand with the habit of holding the vape, and I still get the fast nicotine hit from the vape, and the exhale of 'something' which is all part of the physical habit.

I have zero intentions of stopping vaping, however I have reduced the nicotine from the highest content to the lowest which was always the plan. I've been vaping for mmmmm 7 years? I think!

Reasons.. I like the taste (I vape grape and strawberry or sometimes parma violet, reallllllly sweet flavours)... it keeps me off the sweeties which is handy as im diabetic, and irrationally I feel as if I am allowed one 'vice' - I don't drink, not allowed cake (or tbh, food...), I don't go out much as everywhere is so inaccessible...

I am also aware that the chances of me making even retirement age are slim to none and so the 'we may find out in 20 years time that this is HORRIFIC for your health' concerns are not so much of a concern for me. I'd rather enjoy now, because I don't have a 'later' (though I had 10 years about 14 years ago and I am still here soooooo... )

From a health POV - my respiritory health has been significantly better since switching, but then I also don't go out and meet nasty germ filled people much either so thats likely a big factor, but even when I did, I got far fewer colds and lurgies than I did as a smoker!

I do agree, disposable vapes aimed at children are a fucking nightmare and people starting vaping who would never have smoked... thats foolish for adults and scary for kids.

Also the seeming lack of control on illegal, untested vapes does worry me - I buy known brands from reputable companies and know those juices are tested, I wouldn't buy from market stalls or places that had only an online presence though.

I do quite like that there are disposable vapes, that you can buy in the places were we once all bought cigs, but thats more for those vapers who would go back to cigs if their vape battery went flat or they ran out of juice (my sister!).

I am not bothered by not vaping in any of the places I wouldn't have smoked in, im not itching to do it and I don't tend to need to go out for a 'vape break' unless I am really needing a brain-break from whatever it is I am doing.

Loukitty · 28/05/2023 16:00

Hopefully this will help all the hysterical comments - the big clouds of smoke are from the big tanks, most people have little vape pens that give off little to no 'smoke' at all. Vape juice has to be licensed and tested in uk for sale as opposed to illegal juice. And if its helped shopping hundreds of thousands of people stop smoking cigarettes and getting lung cancer and heart disease then thats a good thing, regardless of how 'gross' you find it. People need to grow up.

When i mentioned air pollution and chemicals in our food even if people arent ignorant theres this cognitive dissonance where they scream about gross vapes but not a peep about how disgusting our air quality is in uk cities and what its doing to our health, as they've got 2 cars parked on their drive and its inconvenient to get worked up about it.

And as someone who can't stand alcohol and doesn't drink Im not whining about it should be banned because personally i dont like it .. even though i hate the smell of it, hate that it puts so much pressure on the nhs esp a&e, hate the antisocial behaviour is creates, its role in domestic violence, the fact that i watched my dad drink himself to death. End of lecture.

@WiddlinDiddlin thanks for your reply & not taking offence!!

ive read lots of your past posts on your various health issues & that's why I was surprised you vape, but yeah I guess we all need one vice!

I'm T2, so totally understand the 'basically no food'!! I low carb to try to avoid the meds. But I'm vegetarian too (no eggs either) so often I'm food free.

its great it helped you off the cigarettes in a few days! If you'd had a prescription, when the vapes ran
out, do you think you'd have gone back or stayed off of the cigarettes?

I totally get the habit bit. That having something to hold & do.

7 years is a l o n g time!!

it's great you've been able to knock the nicotine right down and your respiratory health improved so much since switching.

I'm sorry things are still so inaccessible! It's crap.

your attitude to where/how you buy the 'juice' is commendable, but sadly rare. Everyone else I know that vapes buys juice wherever. My cousin has a lot of flavours, from all over and he loves mixing and creating new flavours. It stops him cooking/baking so much too.

I think it's disgusting they can advertise as 'no nicotine' then in the small print (where no one looks) 'contains nicotine'

they need to find a way of stopping children from buying/using any kind. I know all the local schools have an issue with it & are trying to crack down. Even the very elite private school is pulling its hair out! Where as usually the students are very well behaved, they just can't seem to crack this.

Take care we want & need you around for man many many more years yet!! 🤗

WiddlinDiddlin · 29/05/2023 04:32

Yeah, it really does baffle me how people buy vape juices from the dodgiest looking places without a seconds thought!

Unfortunately despite my health issues I do think I would either eat sweets or go back to the cigs if I had to give up vaping, even now, though cigs would make me feel pretty sick and they smell awful to me now - I'd love to say I have the will power not to but Im using that willpower for other things (chronic pain mainly!) and theres only so much anyone has I think!
