Vaping in the cinema

Wizzbangfizz · 27/05/2023 20:19

Took DDs to the cinema this afternoon to see The Little Mermaid, every 10 mins or so got definite blasts of vape (I do it occasionally so know the smell) from somewhere behind me - turned round a couple of times but couldn’t see who it was and didn’t feel like I could report it either. WTF is wrong with people - surely vaping is classed same as smoking - you wouldn’t spark up in the cinema would you?! Makes me really mad, cinema full of little kids - who would do that?!

@Loukitty I don't like people farting or vaping the cinema. It's not a binary choice; both are stinky and offensive.
And even if some vapes are odourless, most people seem to use horrible sweet sickly ones that are vile

Some weird comments. It stinks? Its disgusting? There are literally 100s of flavours, some like menthol have no discernable scent at all so? And you cant smell it on clothes, cigarette smoke you definitely can granted. I think people see a vape and assume its an actual cigarette and just get confused.

And for all those living in cities you do realise all the nasty chemicals youre breathing in every day from car exhaust air pollution? You can't visibly see it but google all the dangerous crap that we're ingesting daily.

Well it does stink. Sicky and horrible.

There's loads of pollution we're breathing in anyway so what's the harm in adding more crap to the air we breathe? Is that your take, really?

silverlentils · 27/05/2023 23:07

Isn't the whole point of vaping that they have nicotine in them? Surely that's banned in public places too?

I'm currently in Australia where they have uncovered that many flavoured vapes that are supposed to be nicotine free actually have nicotine as well as many harmful chemicals in them. Some actually had more nicotine than an official nicotine vape. I know they probably have different vapes coming into Australia than the UK but it is a pretty dodgy market.

Some of us (more than you probably think) are super allergic to it.

If someone did that with me in the cinema, it would be a hospital job.

Vaping in the cinema isn't acceptable but can you explain how you'd end up in hospital if you were in the vicinity of a vape? Are you unable to walk down the street if the person beside you at the traffic lights is vaping? I think not.

I’m not confused. It stinks.
I know when teen is trying to do it sneakily out of their bedroom window because I can even smell it in the hall. Vapers are just as inconsiderate as smokers have always been. As a smokers I never thought fags smelt. As an ex smoker I know they do, as do vapes.

Tinktravels · 27/05/2023 23:18

Off the vape topic, but I have never spoked a cigarette in my life and the smell does not bother me at all, in fact I never ever notice it. Perhaps it's because I grew up with my dad smoking but for example my mother would get in the car and moan how it's smelt of fags but I never smelt it and still don't!

ThereIbledit · 27/05/2023 23:19

People can be allergic to anything. Actually anything.

In addition to that vape can give asthmatic people an asthma attack - people could literally struggle to breathe as a result of being in an enclosed environment with a vaper.

Not to mention we have no control over which vapes other people are using. A few days ago a big news story broke over the high levels of toxic metals found in vapes confiscated at a school. We dont' want to be forced to breathe vape in an enclosed environment any more than we want to breathe cigarette smoke.

Children’s vapes contain unsafe levels of lead and nickel (thetimes.co.uk)

Vapes confiscated from children at a secondary school had more than twice the safe level of lead and more than nine times that of nickel. The investigation al

People don't realise how addictive they are.

With a cigarette it runs out and the person waits for the cravings to have a next one.
With vaping it doesn't extinguish so they are constantly puffing.

I have seen it in the airport, on the train, charity chugger with clipboard and vape, people in nursery's vaping on the sly in a garden full of kids. They are addicted to sucking on the plastic dick.

I'm allergic to some artificial scents and flavours, mainly 'red' ones, so cherry, strawberry, bubblegum etc. On a street or in the open air, as long as I'm not stood directly by someone I'm usually ok as the air movement takes it away quickly, but if I were in an enclosed room with someone or sat Infront/ behind them on a bus or in the cinema I would have a problem. I only get urticaria (hives) for a couple of days, but I can imagine someone else may react worse. It isn't just vapes for me, it includes some scented candles, body sprays, air fresheners, fabric softener and such. I can end up scratching myself until I bleed and have got infections in the scratches before (scratching in my sleep).

I would have spoken to a member of staff, it's not acceptable especially in an enclosed space.

yes there is too much air pollution. Why do you think a bit more in a confined space is acceptable?

vaping is probably (maybe given lack of data) better than cigarettes, but it isn’t harmless. As with tobacco, I feel like adults should be able to make their own choices for themselves, BUT they do not have a right to inflict that choice on others. Vape all day long in your own home for all I care, but they should be banned from public spaces to same degree as tobacco.

@Forshameandyegads excuse my dyslexia and typing issues.

Can you explain how those symptoms you've described would lead to a 'hospital job?' I am interested.

Chasingadvice · 27/05/2023 23:26

It's not that strange. Loads of people are allergic to washing powder or certain body creams etc, it's the exact same thing, it's just that the particular chemical I'm allergic to is used in vapes as well as other stuff. I can't go in those Clinton type shops because of all the scented candles, so it's not just vapes!

I'm not the person who said I'd end up in hospital. Though I did once end up in A&E because the standard antihistamines weren't working though - wasn't a vape that time but a plug in air freshener.

theGooHasGone · 27/05/2023 23:33

Report them to staff. Totally unacceptable. They wouldn't get away with smoking inside.

Middlelanehogger · 27/05/2023 23:34

Can't stand flavoured vape clouds - it's like walking into a cloud of sugar breath. Obnoxious in any enclosed space even without any consideration of toxic chemicals or whatever!

TomatoSandwiches · 27/05/2023 23:38

And at a film primarily for children, I don't know why anyone would think it's ok tbh.

justasking111 · 27/05/2023 23:40

Some scented candles, plug ins set my asthma off. In the cinema last night set me and one grandchild off coughing. I think they use some kind of anti bac spray solution. Vapers don't though. It's awful to be continuously coughing especially in a public place.

Loukitty · 27/05/2023 21:21

Personally i dont see an issue with it as its not like its actual cigarette smoke, people dont seem to know the difference.
I find people farting in the cinema far more offensive. So rude.

Spot on. I'm very frequently faced with this choice when I go to the cinema: do I bring my arsehole and my gastrointenstinal system in, or not? 🤔

Effingmagicfairy · 27/05/2023 23:55

I’ve just been to a concert tonight, people vaping, we got searched on the way in, they should have confiscated vapes, I can’t stand the synthetic smell, makes me feel nauseous, really anti social, wish it could be banned in public places.

Can we not abstain from both?
