Vaping in the cinema

Wizzbangfizz · 27/05/2023 20:19

Took DDs to the cinema this afternoon to see The Little Mermaid, every 10 mins or so got definite blasts of vape (I do it occasionally so know the smell) from somewhere behind me - turned round a couple of times but couldn’t see who it was and didn’t feel like I could report it either. WTF is wrong with people - surely vaping is classed same as smoking - you wouldn’t spark up in the cinema would you?! Makes me really mad, cinema full of little kids - who would do that?!

And for all those living in cities you do realise all the nasty chemicals youre breathing in every day from car exhaust air pollution? You can't visibly see it but google all the dangerous crap that we're ingesting daily

That's a nonsensical argument. You can't say that something is bad for you so there is no point in not doing it more.

What's the point of not drinking vodka all day every day if you have it on a Friday night?

What's the point of having granola four days a week for breakfast of you have a bacon sandwich the other three?

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 28/05/2023 00:10

Grim if true. Why can’t the vapid one leave the room to indulge in sucking on their sad little stick ?

Why do you vape, OP?

Some scented candles, plug ins set my asthma off. In the cinema last night set me and one grandchild off coughing. I think they use some kind of anti bac spray solution. Vapers don't though. It's awful to be continuously coughing especially in a public place.

Me too.

im mildly allergic to a couple of very common scented herb extract that seem to crop u in anything from toilet cleaner to sweets, and are in some vape oils. I get a lovely asthma attack and sometimes swollen lips or itchy throat.

took me bloody ages to piece together what was happening (well, I didn’t, a clever friend worked out what it was)

YANBU OP!

Totally agree with you, @user1496146479 - it's bloody bonkers.

Except that the OP is also a vaper.

OP - tell us why you vape, please.

CherryCokeFanatic · 28/05/2023 01:19

I couldn’t get too worked up about it myself

The OP can vape and still be annoyed about people doing it in public places like the cinema

I have a fragrance allergy. Earlier this week I was standing in a light crowd waiting for something important and started choking because someone arrived who was wearing perfume. I tried to ignore the sensation and push through, then the coughing fit started and hives started appearing and I knew that if I stayed much longer my throat and lips would start swelling. I was able to remove myself from the situation and avoid a serious incident, but it was a place I needed to be.

vape flavoring is full of fragrance just like perfume and personal care products. One breaths worth on the sidewalk will cause discomfort for me, but sustained exposure is dangerous.

Loukitty · 28/05/2023 03:07

Lots of people managed to stop smoking cigarettes via vaping which is a good thing no? But go ahead and belittle them as saddos sucking on their sad sticks 🙄 if it makes you feel better.

I mentioned air pollution as peope get het up about 'disgusting' vapes whilst being totally ignorant of the crap that we're breathing in daily in cities. Theyre also ignorant of the crap and chemicals that are in our food. They're the same people who want to ban everything they disagree with 🙄

I dont personally drink and could do without binge drinking idiots and drunks hassling me at festivals etc. Do i think alcohol should be banned because i personally dislike it and the problems it causes. Of course not. Who the hell am i to demand that?

Exactly. What a bunch of weird comments on here 😳

Personally i dont see an issue with it as its not like its actual cigarette smoke, people dont seem to know the difference.
I find people farting in the cinema far more offensive. So rude.

What? There are thousands of chemicals in vapes, some of them known to be incredibly toxic and carcinogenic, and many of these found at high levels.

WiddlinDiddlin · 28/05/2023 04:38

ThereIbledit · 27/05/2023 23:19

People can be allergic to anything. Actually anything.

In addition to that vape can give asthmatic people an asthma attack - people could literally struggle to breathe as a result of being in an enclosed environment with a vaper.

Not to mention we have no control over which vapes other people are using. A few days ago a big news story broke over the high levels of toxic metals found in vapes confiscated at a school. We dont' want to be forced to breathe vape in an enclosed environment any more than we want to breathe cigarette smoke.

Children’s vapes contain unsafe levels of lead and nickel (thetimes.co.uk)

Ahh.. yes, illegal, untested vapes.

I do vape, I wouldn't indoors somewhere like the cinema because yep, people can be allergic (I have a friend who is allergic to the PG in it!) and it is just rude.

However it is irritating that stories like the above rapidly turn from 'illegal untested cheap vapes aimed at children are discovered to have nasty chemicals in them' to 'all vapes have nasty chemicals in them'. It is not the case - vape juices HAVE to be tested here in the UK and you can't (as a shop or supplier) even mix two tested flavours together and sell that... the mix would still have to be tested again!

I'd be pretty fucked off if someone confiscated my switched off, put away £60 box mod + £30 tank because vaping isn't permitted in a venue though! Vapings fine on my way to and from the venue!

Not to mention the huge smoke clouds, and the strong smell (which I quite like but would be fuming if my child was subjected to it)

pinkstripeycat · 28/05/2023 05:37

Breathing in fumes from someone else’s lungs is disgusting. People say it’s only vape/water but it’s chemicals. Gross

Hairbrushhandle · 28/05/2023 05:37

I have a colleague who vapes in meetings. He holds it in his hand like dock workers do with a cigarette to hide it from the boss, except it steams up and he looks like he's sat in a volcano, just pretending we all can't see it. By the end of the meeting we are all sat in a room that is humid and stinks of artificial strawberry.

LP9 · 27/05/2023 22:18

Former toxicologist here. They are nasty things, better than smoking but still not like breathing fresh air. I hold my breath when walking past people vaping, I wouldn't stay in an enclosed space when someone was using one if I could help it. I sincerely hope that everyone is see using one is trying to give up smoking rather than just vaping for enjoyment.

Given the age of many of them, sadly I doubt it.

No it's got to that point where no one said anything quick enough and now it's just awkward. A bit like when you're talking to someone with something in their teeth. There's a window, and we've missed it. Were a matrix organisation so he has no manager to point it out and no one else wants to look 'difficult'.

I'd have a look because I'm sure you'll have a no smoking policy and valuing probably fits under that umbrella. Not to mention all the rest of the staffs health! That's so unprofessional and just gross.

Some weird comments. It stinks? Its disgusting? There are literally 100s of flavours, some like menthol have no discernable scent at all so? And you cant smell it on clothes, cigarette smoke you definitely can granted. I think people see a vape and assume its an actual cigarette and just get confused.

And for all those living in cities you do realise all the nasty chemicals youre breathing in every day from car exhaust air pollution? You can't visibly see it but google all the dangerous crap that we're ingesting daily.

@Loukitty

No. People don't see it & assume it's a cigarette. No confusion.

cigarettes have some smoke, but nothing like the plumes of vapour from vapes.
cigarettes smell like burning tobacco, not candy floss, raspberry etc.

People might be breathing in car fumes etc BUT there's no need to add MORE chemicals etc🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️

ThirstyThursday · 28/05/2023 07:01

Tinktravels · 27/05/2023 23:18

Off the vape topic, but I have never spoked a cigarette in my life and the smell does not bother me at all, in fact I never ever notice it. Perhaps it's because I grew up with my dad smoking but for example my mother would get in the car and moan how it's smelt of fags but I never smelt it and still don't!

@Tinktravels

thats really weird! Are there other things you don't smell either?

I can say that a parent smoking doesn't stop you smelling it.

Don’t be ridiculous. Vaping is as bad as cigarettes - there was a recent report about this on the BBC.

just stop it. You sound like a child.

No, people aren't ignorant, unaware or whatever, of other pollutants, that doesn't stop them wanting this one banned in PUBLIC. Especially in enclosed spaces or in places people gather outside.

if you've stopped smoking, you can stop vaping.
