long story, short.
husband and I took early retirement and sold our home in Canada. 7 weeks ago we moved to a condo that we had purchased previously (for our retirement) In Dominican Republic. 3 min walk to gorgeous bavaro beach, lots of quirky little eateries, Small condo complex but upscale with two large pools and 2 bbq gazebos with included gas bbqs and dining tables for the owners to use. SURPRISE. 3 couples that we have not had alot of socializing with have all sent messages this week. 1 looking to stay a week in august, 1 a week in October, and the other couple want to bring their two kids over CHRISTMAS!! I need to figure out a good response to them all. I did want to message back FUCK OFF but my husband thought it was a bit harsh haha. Couple one have always been good hosts as have we on the rare occasion that we have been in each others house ( and good dinner guests, including asking what they can bring and when i say nothing, they showed up with flowers and two bottles of wine as they didn't know what i was cooking, so a red and a white) Couple Two. had them over for a bbq once. nice enough people that lived in our culdesac, but showed up empty handed and then asked for some of the leftovers as she didn't have time to make anything for their packed lunches the next day (it was a lunch bbq over at 5 pm) Couple three. JUST NO. In the message they sent they said that they know it is just two bedrooms two baths, but the kids could sleep in the livingroom and share THEIR bathroom. And they were so looking forward to my cooking for the week as they are not in a position to eat out much !! ( I am a NOW RETIRED restaurant owning chef. NO NOPE NOPITY NOPE.
So. How do I word my messages back to them that does not include FUCK OFF ?

Years ago I was in Blackpool and asked for a vodka and white. Got looked at like I had two heads and was asked 'white what?' 🤣🤣

@christmassausages YES!! 😂😂😂

martinisforeveryone · 27/05/2023 09:03

Nothing to add except that Morrisons online sell Tayto cheese and onion crisps, if you can access Morrisons delivery service obviously. Not sure about in stores.

Solonge · 27/05/2023 09:30

‘Its a retirement complex, no kids allowed and anyway, i havent taken early retirement to become chief cook and bottle washer for lots of people I barely know’. Thats for the last couple you mentioned, the freeloaders. For the others I would be inclined to say you are having the first year to settle in and will be travelling all over to get to know your area and will think about hosting in a year or so. We moved to the South of France from rainy UK so have been there, done that!

Bababette · 27/05/2023 09:31

Me too! 😆

@momager1 Interestingly, I put in a search for Bepantiseptic First Aid Cream on Amazon - Germolene came up as one of the options! This was on the UK website, maybe you can strike gold with a reach on your Amazon version.

Everyone else might like to know that Tayto Cheese & Onion crisps are also available from Amazon UK, I would highly recommend these over the mixed packs/boxes, nothing wrong with the other flavours but the Cheese & Onion are moreish. They don't seem to stock Keogh's in the Shamrock flavour.

But are they northern Tayto or southern Tayto? 😝

Do you think you’re being clever? That panties phrase is gross and I never use it but I think you need a little bit more than that before imagining you are the next Sherlock Holmes and outing a troll.

Thisisnotmyname2022 · 27/05/2023 09:41

How far are you from Ambar? We are there in August, keep hearing dreadfully things about the beach, I’m hoping it’s not as bad as people are making out.

Enjoy your retirement, and just ignore or block people trying it on for a freebie!

I’m from Belfast and we don’t say it a lot but definitely have heard it and probably used it myself although we’d say ‘knickers’ rather than ‘panties’

Personally as long as I get the lasagne and mars bar pie recipes I don't care a jot if @momager1 is making it up or not. Her take on life sounds idyllic, and it's taking me away from real life problems.

Well quite. It is such a relatively harmless OP; what on earth is the point of troll-hunting?

Peachy2005 · 27/05/2023 10:38

Not completely idyllic: I looked it up last night. I wouldn’t personally live anywhere you’re only safe in gated communities and other drawbacks of the island but that’s just me. There’s a price to be paid for all that idyll. Enjoying hearing about it though 😍

Peachy2005 · 27/05/2023 10:39

I do think we need our own Tayto thread: nobody will nail their colours to the mast!!

Chickenkeev · 27/05/2023 10:42

I really want a bag of Tayto now!

Livelovebehappy · 27/05/2023 10:57

Camt imagine ever doing this. We have friends living in France who have asked if we want to join them for a week in september. I would love to visit the region theyre in, but do not want to shack up with someone else as would like to have the freedom to do what I want when I want without having to consider someone elses house rules.

The same thing happened to me in Edinburgh 🤣
Got asked do you have black lemonade in Ireland? 😆🤣😆

Don't know brown lemonade, but we definitely have red lemonade - must check is it still sold here.

You do know that before the whole Twitter hashtag thing, hashtags were used in place of the word 'number', don't you?! So #1 literally means number 1.

The op is retired with grown up children, not difficult to work out that is how she is using the #....

Thank god you said this, I was really confused as I didn't remember OP using twitter hashtags.
I'm old enough to remember their original purpose, so definitely read it as number 1....
It actually is quite annoying when posters try to tear the OP apart with their "gotchas".

bringincrazyback · 26/05/2023 12:07

This trend for blocking anybody one doesn't happen to feel like talking to is so depressing. Have we really all become so spineless?

That said... YANBU OP, the first couple don't sound so bad but the others are just CFs, the ones with the kids breathtakingly so!

Nothing to do with cowardice. Either I consider people worthy of the time out of my day, or I don't.

CFs like this can argue with silence for all I care.

well it is done. 10 minutes ago they called in and cancelled the reso for tonight. It MAY be because I fired of one last message. I said " I know i do not own the restaurant anymore, but all those employees are mine and loyal to me. They know that you have been told no to visiting. Our daughter is working tonight but she will not be discussing her parents carribean home as she is there to do a job and she must model professional conduct to ensure her employees do the same. No one at the restaurant will be discussing our home with you. I am not responsible for the fact that you told your kids anything. I am sorry for the kids if they are disappointed but you set them up for that, not me. This is the last communication I will have on this matter.

I hope the restaurant takes a non refundable $10 per person deposit to cover last minute cancellations too!

back from the beach. a few too many margaritas so recipe will be forthcoming in the morning. @SausageinaBun germolene fixes everything. from burns to scrapes to mozzie bites. Only reason I look for alot of it at a time is because it can be several years between batches. My husband (canadian) now loves it and swears by it for EVERYTHING.

God, Germolene, the smell of childhood!

T1Dmama · 27/05/2023 13:30

@momager1
Can I make a suggestion?….
If I were in your position I would change my telephone number, only sending the new number out to friends and family…
All the neighbours, customers etc can keep in touch via Facebook only…. But i would amend my friends list on their too and maybe post a pic of the beach and state that you're enjoying retirement and that if anyone wants to visit you’d be thrilled to recommend some really nice resorts and meet them for a drink/meal. This would hopefully stop any further CF’s inviting themselves for Christmas dinner.
I think #3 is no loss to the restaurant

Tessabelle74 · 27/05/2023 14:30

Couple 1, it would be lovely to see you if you're here in holiday, but we can't host guests, sorry. Second and third, just fuck off will be perfect

Not sure why you assumed I needed a lesson in hashtag history? I know the OP is using them in place of ‘number’ 🤷‍♀️

I absolutely agree! I don't quite get all the love and encouragement for the OP who is absolute revelling in their good fortune and in the outrage at these CFs.

If OP is really retiring in your 50s to "Dominican Republic. 3 min walk to gorgeous bavaro beach, lots of quirky little eateries, Small condo complex but upscale with two large pools and 2 bbq gazebos with included gas bbqs and dining tables for the owners" (lovely detail there OP, we can all see the picture you are painting) then presumably somewhere in their life they've had to deal with saying no to people who want to do something they don't?

I don't quite get the gleeful outrage or the enthusiastic support. If this is true, OP is a very fortunate person and perhaps should just find a way to get enjoyment from that lovely life rather than from moaning about CFs on here. Just say no and enjoy your "condo".

Hmm sounds like sour grapes to me.

GABakingShow and CheezePleeze. you are letting yourselves down. Of course probably the majority of us think we would love to be able to retire in our 50s with our Partner and live in such an idyllic place!
Yes, this OP's style includes capitals and so on. It's the way she expresses this exasperating problem.
My life has not been a bed of roses. I was widowed by suicide at 42 and left with 3 children and problems and have become disabled and on a very low budget since, living in constant pain. I ought to feel jealous of this OP. But what good would that do? She and her Partner worked very hard to achieve their early retirement goal. Much as the DR is wonderful, they aren't living in the lap of luxury either!

Getting used by selfish people she hardly knows, expecting for a free holiday is a real pest when you move away, as I found just by moving out of the south of England. People quickly saw me as a free holiday/convenience for their journey and did not take into account why I had moved or what my life was like. I wrote about it above.
The OP has a genuine reason to post here and her replies have been entertaining to boot!
So just take your green-eyed monster home and stop feeding it.

Northernsouloldies · 27/05/2023 15:03

I'd msg back, you seem to have got our details mixed up with a hotel booking site. Bye bye. Block.

Tell them they are welcome but you'd have to charge them the going rate as you didn't move to become a free holiday destination! They'll soon stop hassling you :)
