Does this fill anyone else with dread

Myfavouritecolourisanimalprint · 24/05/2023 11:37

I'm dreading it too. 21 degrees is fine, but I can't cope with hot weather at all. The joys of being a fatty with fair skin

limitedperiodonly · 24/05/2023 11:56

Talk of dreading of temperatures of over 25 degrees in a British summer is like dreading opening the front door or answering the phone when an unexpected person calls.

Par for the course for many people here.

Can those of us who like the cold weather do the same in reverse then and laugh at you for not coping with the cold, after all Norway has it worse.

You very much could if that cold lasted about 2 weeks and then it was hot for the rest of that year. Then it would be understandable/ridiculous no? - I mean why moan about weather you get for a very short period of time and quite often we have shit/rainy summers. But without fail it’s cold here for a good 6 months .

@Dagnabit So envious. When I was 14 I went pony trekking in the Brecon Beacons for half term with a group of school friends and a teacher at this time of year. It was my first time away from home on my own and I was very excited. I was told it always rained and was chilly, but I didn't care because I was horse-mad, not a sunbather.

My mum didn't give me sunscreen, because why would I need it? Instead, she packed waterproofs and warm clothes.

They had a heatwave. It must have been in the 80s and there was no shade. I had a vest top under my sweatshirt and stripped down to it but I had to put the heavy sweatshirt back on because I could feel myself burning. The sweatshirt was an old scraggy one retired to horse riding, so the sleeves were too short. My upturned wrists burned really badly as did my chin which was poking out from under the peaked riding hat. It turned into one huge blister.

Even though it was only on tiny bits, I burned so badly it was the only time I've ever had sunburn. I never wanted to do it again.

But despite the pain and the blisters, I loved that half-term holiday. The landscape was beautiful. I'm from Essex, which has its pretty parts, but had never seen anything like Wales.

Have a great time and I wish you the fantastic weather I had all those years ago. I know you'll pack the sunscreen.

@limitedperiodonly Thank you, we are all really looking forward to the break 😊 We visited Tenby last year and it was amazing; absolutely beautiful - I’d definitely go back there. It’s Porthcawl this year. We plan to walk the Brecon Beacons at some point. We’re in the Midlands so a lot closer.

You poor thing! Sunburn is the pits! Will definitely take suncream - dd and dh have the ginger gene and poor ds was sunburnt during a tag rugby festival a few weeks ago. It wasn’t warm so we, among many others, were caught out and he come home very red and sore!

Delatron · 24/05/2023 13:52

I think people do forget that the sun is at its strongest this time of year and through June. So just because it’s only 😉 18/19s degrees doesn’t mean you won’t get badly burnt.

EbonyRaven · 24/05/2023 18:10

strawberriesandkreme · 24/05/2023 10:12

I think it's because 20 really cannot be described as "hot". People faffing about the "heat" when it's cooler than the setting on most central heating come up as a bit precious.

Many countries famously experience genuine heatwave and it's unbearable and even unsafe. The UK is hardly one of these countries. At worst, we have 2 or 3 "hot" days and we must keep curtains closed when it's sunny.

This. ^ Acting as if they're about to pass out from shock, at the temperature being 20 to 22 degrees C when it's almost JUNE is a bit pathetic, and makes me wonder how these people cope with life.

Harmonypus · 24/05/2023 18:14

With a medical condition that makes me heat intolerant, I can manage maybe 22-23⁰C, at 25⁰C I'm melting, anything above that and I'm bed-bound, with two air conditioning units on full blast.

Here we go again, my electricity bills are now double my winter bills, and they've been crippling for the past couple of years, so I'm really dreading the next few months!

countrygirl99 · 24/05/2023 18:23

And people with conditions like arthritis suffer more in the cold wet majority of the year.

Lemonyyy · 24/05/2023 18:24

Not filled with dread, filled with joy! Finally some nice fucking weather, sick of the rain, sick of the grey, sick of the sore joints from the cold.

PinkRiceKrispies · 24/05/2023 18:24

22C here today and too warm for me. House gets so stifling, it's just horrible.

TeenLifeMum · 24/05/2023 18:26

Sorry but I’m so happy to be able to paddle board in the sun and enjoy the garden.

We have quite a breeze here. With all the windows open it didn't feel like 22 degrees.

Goodyetalso · 24/05/2023 18:35

OP, I hate hot weather as much as you and found those two heatwaves last year absolutely unbearable but I think YABU here. These are normal temperatures for this time of year. We often have a couple of very warm weeks in May and then the weather is often really miserable and grey in the summer holidays. Also, until a week or so ago, spring had been grey, rainy and cold in most places in the U.K. I don’t think this forecast means anything in particular and I’m enjoying being able to wear shorts for a bit and not having to put the heating on to dry laundry.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 24/05/2023 18:39

Yippee! 🌞

Seahorsemama · 24/05/2023 18:51

18 to 20 degrees is just perfect for me - don’t like it any hotter

ibixa · 24/05/2023 18:51

Oh get a grip!

HarrietPoole · 24/05/2023 19:12

Yep, OP. I also hate it.

I'm not precious or pathetic, I just do not cope well with heat. Good for you those of you who can. I'll try not to feel superior when you're bleating about it being too cold.

Yes!!!!!!!! We’re going to the Lake District via Manchester and now I won’t have to pack wellies and loads of jumpers!!!!

Threeboysadogandacat · 24/05/2023 19:31

When it gets really hot we normally open the front and back doors and let any breeze blow through. We’ve just got an indoor cat so we can’t even open the windows more than a couple of inches. I’m not looking forward to the heat.

Blueisthecolour1 · 24/05/2023 19:35

Love British Weather threads like this. Love ‘em. No it’s not too hot - it’ll be welcome after 6 months of grey chill & freezing winds. It won’t last. This is Britain don’t you know! It may rain for the whole of August 🤷‍♀️

SalviaDivinorum · 24/05/2023 19:44

No. I'm really looking forward to a week or two of heat.

I am so over the long dull winter we've had and it will be glorious to be warm for a while.

Wildlyboring · 24/05/2023 19:49

I'm heavily pregnant so heat isn't my best friend right now but it isn't that warm and this year so far has felt considerably colder than the last few years. Grateful that my car has air con and we live in a generally chilly house though.

ScotsBluebell · 24/05/2023 19:49

It's been 13 C or less here for weeks. I've still got a winter woolly on. Don't think we'll reach those giddy heights, but I sure wish we would.

Bearthepooh · 24/05/2023 19:53

This is beautiful, I've just returned from a 2 week holiday and have an absolute ton of washing to do and I can get it dried quicker..my dryer broke the day before I left.

WildRose42 · 24/05/2023 19:54

Yes OP it fills me with dread too. I’m absolutely hopeless in the heat! I cannot cope with it and i am not excited to see those degrees above! 😒 our house is stifling, the windows are so shit
too. So nope, I don’t want it unless it’s around 16-17 degrees, that’s ok. Bring on Autumn already.
