I was at a cafe enjoying breakfast. The cafe is big, got around 25 tables in. I was the only one in the cafe. A couple, came in, placed their order at the till and came and sat at the table right beside me! They had 20-odd other tables to choose from. My table wasn't in an enviable position in the cafe, no views out of the window, nothing special about this area in the cafe, yet they chose to do this. Why?

catsmere, they were sat at a different table, he was the one that came over to their space, talked to them and told them to go away. You can’t get much ruder then that!

He described exactly how close they were, in a nook in an otherwise empty pub. That’s the rudeness, not pointing it out and asking they give both parties some space.

I dont think its self-importance or sad, I think people just want to escape the hustle and bustle of today's busy, modern world where we're all living on top of one another.

Yes, and having constant demands to interact at length with randoms. Peace and quiet, a bit of privacy and personal space are not things that we should only get at home. Hell, some people can’t get them at home and go out for a bit of downtime, but some people seem to think not being amenable to strangers practically sitting in their laps when they have ample space elsewhere is some sort of personal insult.

💯 agree. Like many of us, my life is full with work, teenagers, elderly parents with health issues and sometimes wanting to go to a cafe or a pub and sit alone enjoying a nice solo meal or drink is priceless.

Not sure why some on here seem to think having that peace is selfish and we should appreciate random strangers wanting to share our table and chat endlessly about inane crap.

@SamW98 couldn’t agree more! I’m full-time carer for my 90yo mother with dementia, I don’t owe anybody else my time or personal space. The only others who are welcome to get up close and personal with me and have any reason to assume it’s okay are the four-footed, whiskered variety of purrson.

Literally nothing runs through their heads, it's automatic and psychologists call it flocking. It's because we used to be fish or something https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23041055/#:~:text=Abstract,explicit%20inter%2Dindividual%20recruitment%20signals.

This is fascinating. I had no idea about this.

It is often the opposite in doctor's waiting area. I entertain myself by observing the spread and distancing - it happened before Covid too. I am always early (hate being late even if doc is) and see people spread so carefully.

Not surprised with that. Almost by definition, people in doctor's waiting rooms aren't well, so there's a risk that someone will be contagious and if you sit too close to someone, there's a risk you'll catch something. So it's entirely reasonable to keep your distance in a GP surgery or hospital etc.

I've had people, of the male variety, sitting next to me in empty cinemas. So I've abandoned selecting the middle for a better experience of the cinematography for sitting at the end of a row. It makes their purposes obvious, and escape easy, and actually stops it.

The idiot has also parked in a way that both drivers will have to carefully squeeze between both cars and try to not dink each other’s cars when getting in 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ why would you actually choose to do that!

I know! Why would you choose to make your life that difficult? And my car has very low doors (and I am very fat) so I ideally need to be able to open my door fully!

It was fine, it just amused me!

On a related note, funny how a B&M always flocks to the side of a Pets at Home 😃

Yes.. I didn't feel my photo was particularly outing as to my location! 😁

Derby?

SamW98 · 26/05/2023 14:17

Just had something bizarre happen to me. Was in M&S at the order collection desk. Just me, no one else around. Then another woman came over to the desk and stood so close to me that her basket was actually touching my arm.

I moved a couple of feet away and she actually shuffled along so she was still only inches away - why??? We were the only two people there?

@PurpleNebula84

Just had a United Utilities van park so close to my car they were struggling to get in and out as well as getting equipment out... Why the chuff did you park so bloody close then? There was literally no other cars apart from mine and their van 🤔🤔 I don't get it 🤷🏻‍♀️

Just had similar with a windscreen replacement van. I parked in the middle of an empty 3 car bay in a retail park car park. Plenty of spaces elsewhere, lots of empty bays/groups all over (it was midweek so quiet). He came and parked right next to me - a huge long wheel base/high roofed trades van. He drove in so his driver's door was next to my driver's door. Then he really struggled to get out of his driver's door as he was a big chap and there was probably no more than a foot of space between the vehicles!

I thought he must have parked there to be close to a nearby car to replace their windscreen, but no, he wandered off to meet his (presumably) wife and children who'd parked her monstrosity of a 4x4 several bays away in another virtually empty area - then they all wondered towards the shops. He could so easily have parked literally anywhere else, where he'd have had more space, much closer to either his wife or the shops, fewer cars, etc (like his wife had the sense to do), but no! Very strange indeed.

I know another location where they are both next to each other too 😂

Hahaha I hate this too - it seems weird to me. To be honest I don’t even know why?
