Pedestrian holding parking space

carparkcow · 22/05/2023 17:10

As soon as this happened today I told DH I just HAD to open it up to the wrath of AIBU... very interested to hear opinions!

We were circling the hospital car park which was extremely busy as always. Finally see a lady pulling out of a space a little further up the row and thank our lucky stars. However, as we go to pull into it there is a pedestrian stood there and says she has claimed the space for her husband and points at a car literally on the other side of the car park.

I was pretty stressed about my appointment (scan to check for MC) and essentially told the woman that she was completely out of order, this wasn't in the spirit of the law of the car park and we would happily block the space and take the fine to prevent her being able to park there, such was my fury.

So - AIBU?! SURELY this isn't acceptable behaviour??!!!!!

Oh - I should add - she refused to move until her husband finally got over to us in his car and after some persuasion from DH told her to move

No that is ridiculous, you can’t stand in a car park space to claim it, especially in a hospital car park of all places.

SuperSange · 22/05/2023 17:14

Absolutely unacceptably. I've had similar happen to me and if you drive really slowly at them , they move.

Nordicrain · 22/05/2023 17:14

Well no, it's not within the spirit of car parks. But equally you don't know what they were therefore or how stressed/ worried she was about the appointment. People do strange things when they are scared.

Yanbu.it's akin to bagging a table in a cafe before you've bought food.

Teddypops · 22/05/2023 17:18

YABU to think that your reason for being there trumps anyone elses. (but I hope all is OK x)

HTH.

Where did you get that from?

Which should just be the norm everywhere. Ordering food in a cafe just to then find out there isn’t a table that fits is just stupid.

I agree, but that is a topic of huge debate on here.

Spacestace · 22/05/2023 17:23

I wouldn't do it personally but honestly couldn't get too annoyed about it in a hospital car park.

Absolutely didn't think my reason for being there trumped anyone else's, not sure where that came from.

Absolutely did think my car trumped her body in the need for the parking space though!

I’m afraid I have done this, when time was running out to get DF to his appointment. I’m not really sure what the problem is….

Fandabedodgy · 22/05/2023 17:27

YANBU she was a CF but I kind of get it

CatchHimDerry · 22/05/2023 17:27

Maybe they’d been circling for ages hoping for something and had appointments too etc?

Mummy2mybear · 22/05/2023 17:27

Wow OP this would have infuriated me too.

Laiste · 22/05/2023 17:27

YANBU

It's happened to me once and i told them to move as i'd just wait over the space, same as you OP.

Bloody ridiculous to stand 'bagsying' a space.

Don't ever do what pp suggest though re: driving slowly at them. That's going to get you arrested.

HowBeOn · 22/05/2023 17:28

She probably assumed you wouldn’t want to miss an appointment over it so you’d give up. She is unreasonable!!

This, I was circling for ages and waiting around when going to say goodbye to my dad as he died, I would have absolutely had a passenger jump out and grab a space if I had someone else with me, and I wouldn't have felt bad about it.

AnObserverInThisDarkWorld · 22/05/2023 17:31

Maybe they'd been driving around for ages and were going to miss their super stressful appointment?

They were there first.

Because you absolutely made it sound like you're appointment trumped theirs.

But if this had happened surely you would have said and most people would empathise and let you have it?

A hospital isn’t somewhere people go for shits and giggles, everyone likely has a v good and important reason for being there…

Mummy2mybear · 22/05/2023 17:32

Did she actually claim the space in the end ?

Acheyknees · 22/05/2023 17:33

I once had a lady in front of me at the supermarket checkout 'saving a space' in the queue for her friend who was still shopping. As I started putting my shopping onto the empty belt she said 'I'm next, not you!', I told her to put her shopping on the belt then, of course she couldn't until her friend came. Bizarre behaviour!

MissDollyMix · 22/05/2023 17:34

YANBU if for no other reason than my DM used to make me go and stand in parking spaces for her when I was a kid. It was so embarrassing and I used to get shouted at by (rightly) irate motorists.

😂 this has to be a joke

TrashyPanda · 22/05/2023 17:51

First car to arrive at the parking spot gets it.

pedestrians do not count.

a large number of people trying to park in a hospital are fairly stressed to begin with - trying to “push in” doesn’t help anyone.
