I’m just wondering who on earth cares? Can’t understand why this is such big news.

So are you saying the police are corrupt important incompetent?

Consistently lenient.

Rhondaa · 22/05/2023 20:36

'She asked her civil servants to find out. They aren't employed by her'

Fgs I'd ask people to find out stuff at work. Never realised you had to pay someone's wages before you asked juniors to look into something for you.

Notonthestairs · 22/05/2023 20:39

Doesn't Braverman have form with speeding tickets - William Wragg tweeted that she'd tried to claim a speeding fine on expenses years ago.

So she clearly can read some forms...

It was a personal matter and frankly not suitable for Home Office staff to waste their time on.

The last one she did here in the local church had attendees who swapped places with a holocaust survivor who stood and asked a question.

And the holocaust survivor wrongly accused Braverman of using the word ''swarm''.

TheHandmaiden · 22/05/2023 20:40

As far as I can see it looks like the only error was her asking her private office to sort this out for her. They obviously asked the Cabinet Office for advice and the answer came back it was a no.

Obviously if they had done so, and arranged it, they could have been sacked and Braverman would have been able to use their doing the task as a defence.

Mind you, I doubt she is the only Conservative minister with these issues.

TooBigForMyBoots · 22/05/2023 20:41

derxa · 22/05/2023 19:19

It does. To my shame I've done two speed awareness courses. In both cases I was 10 miles an hour over the limit. The courses were very useful and I'm much more speed aware and a better driver. SB is hated on here. I wonder what Suella, Priti Patel and Kemi Badenoch have in common?

Are you talking about the Mail on Sunday front page @derxa? If so, I agree it can't be easy for POC in the Tory party when your media allies are so racist they'll throw you under the bus.

When you typed this, did you really think it was in any way the same situation?

Not aimed at me but I would suggest there is a lack of consistency between forces and I would politely suggest the fpns were silly and done to appease the hysterical media who were whipping up some folk who may have been easily fooled.

If you think fpns are silly why do you consistently support a government that introduced many of them @Janiie?

He didn't actually tweet that - she may not have been referring to a current speeding fine - rather asking a hypothetical question.

You are happy with taxpayer funded civil servants spending their days sorting out the private misdeamenours of ministers.

Takes all sorts.

Yes. Someone said civil servants aren't employed by her so how very dare she ask them to look into something for her, I merely suggested it is a common occurrence in workplaces. She should have known better obviously, some folk there seem very keen to leak.

Love an argument over semantics.

You pick the one word "swarm"

Meanwhile in the real world we will realise swarm, influx, invasion etc all had the same meaning in message and so her whole point was valid even if she chose one wrong word.

Asking a junior member of staff, in your average office, to help you out with some photocopying, is not the same as the Home Secretary repeatedly asking civil servants to intervene over her speeding ticket.

It's odd that it needs saying, really, but there we are.

He tweeted she asked whether a speeding ticket incurred in the course of parliamentary duties could be claimed on expenses. This happened in 2015.
You may think that an ordinary question but I certainly have never asked anyone I've worked for if they might pay a speeding ticket. It certainly stuck in William Wragg mind.

GrannyRose15 · 22/05/2023 20:53

Storm in a teacup. Or maybe another attempt to get rid of a government minister by foul means because no one has the wit to challenge them by means which are fair.

Notonthestairs · 22/05/2023 20:54

"She should have known better obviously, so"

Well as Attorney General I think she might be expected to know a bit.

bluewanda · 22/05/2023 20:55

Meh, I can’t get too worked up about this TBH. Can’t stand the Tories but in the league table of politicians who have done bad things, this is pretty low level.

Are ylu suggesting a duel or a general election?

I disagree. Invasion sounds like just that, a mass influx of people. Swarm <which she didn't say> sounds derogatory. Words matter particularly if you accuse someone incorrectly.

In the real world - the Guardian have also pointed out that Braverman has not used the word “swarm” on record.

Have I understood correctly that we should be full of praise for the Home Secretary because she has not said that some of the poorest and deprived people in the country are a swarm, but instead are an invasion?

I am really hoping that my tiredness is making me read things that aren't here.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 22/05/2023 21:00

I do hope she finally gets to boot but I expect Sunak is too weak.

Oh no I didn't say it was the same just as example of how one asks juniors to check things out at work. I don't think she was asking them to 'intervene' rather check if a 1 to 1 was possible and it wasn't so she paid the fine. The end. Or so it should be.. perhaps she could borrow Bozo's hairshirt to wear for 3 months?

Are you the least concerned that the Home Secretary is making the civil servants in her department spend time on trivia like whether or not she can avoid going public about her law breaking instead of STOPPING THE BOATS?
