Is this incredibly racist or am I being sensitive

Have had to nc as incredibly outing.

I enquired about a blossom tree installation in my restaurant, someone got back to me with a quote and I said great what’s his timescales. He let me know a date and I told him it would be suitable but nothing yet agreed.
Next thing I know he says he requires a 50% deposit because he’s ordered the blossom for the tree.
I never asked him to order the blossom, never agreed that the work would actually be done and certainly didn’t agree to give him 50% upfront.

I’ve had to block him as he is continuously ringing and messaging me and is just being plain nasty, to both my husband and I.

I think he’s gone a step too far with this Facebook post though, the reference to scrubbing korma pans and polishing shoes just gets to me, I feel he’s being racist, we have an Indian restaurant but I don’t actually go/work there so he’s obviously made that up to be spiteful.

I don't think its particularly racist is it?, it's a snarky comment aimed at your business, korma pans presumably are a thing one might wash up in an indian restaurant.
I'm an undertaker so someone might comment about seeing me polishing a coffin or somesuch.
He just sounds like a prick to be honest!

SpeckledlyHen · 22/05/2023 16:42

God it gets worse, so you actually agreed to pay a deposit but just didn't want to pay the deposit he asked for, so you blocked him and now claiming to be a victim of racism. Awful awful behaviour

Well he was racist and she’s perfectly within her rights to not agree to go ahead with a business transaction if she doesn’t want to agree to the terms. Even if she had completely ruined his business, that doesn’t excuse racism.

Helloword · 22/05/2023 16:46

Restaurantlover · 22/05/2023 16:41

I didn’t want to go into detail about the actual payment issue because it’s not what my op is about.
I offered 20% deposit, if he wanted 50% deposit he could’ve had the blossoms delivered to the restaurant because it was to be built in situ, I gave him details of the company so he could check out the business on companies house that we are genuine etc. business to business requires a level of trust on both sides, unfortunately I didn’t have it from him, and as I’ve been stung in the past I was weary.

It didn’t constitute the right for his comments, what he out on Facebook was just a snippet, my husband and I have had continuous messages and phone calls, prank orders to the restaurant, for the past 3 days.

Op, I agree his comments are horrible. But I also think a person like him would be horrible to a white person too in this scenario.

Why dont you report him to HMRC?

AnonyMenOhPee · 22/05/2023 16:47

I like how you’ve made the business identifiable here when you were the one in the wrong initially by refusing to pay for a service you did actually agree to. Coming here to slag them off to a wider audience where they probably won’t see you do it. Hopefully someone sends them the link to this thread.

Wife2b · 22/05/2023 16:47

You agreed to the work and then backed out once it was time to pay up. How was he to know you are a time waster? I’m not surprised he’s pissed.

"Is this incredibly racist or am I being sensitive"
What's the point of this poll exactly?

danceyourselfdizzy1 · 22/05/2023 16:47

LibertyFloral · 22/05/2023 16:36

Don't be a idiot @danceyourselfdizzy1

Do you know that your user name could be subtle racism against dervishes or other religions who use dance in this way. It's subtle but you are hiding your racism in plain sight here.

Bloody hell you sound nuts.

potniatheron · 22/05/2023 16:47

OP, yes he's being racist but the BIGGER POINT here which you and everyone else seems to be ignoring is that if your messages with him could be reasonably taken to constitute a commission then he can take you to the small claims court. Plus, as I said upthread, it's bad PR for your other suppliers. So I'd focus on that first and foremost. You've said that your messages and conversations with him did not constitute a commission, so get your solicitor to put that in writing and get him to take the post down.

notgojira · 22/05/2023 16:47

If you were offering a deposit that infers you had a contract?

NotQuiteHere · 22/05/2023 16:48

OP you need to decide: is this incredibly racist as in the thread title or just subtly racist as you claim in your posts? Or its subtlety makes it incredibly racist?

Intarestine · 22/05/2023 16:48

It saddens me that you don’t see it.Its like racism has evolved so much, those of us it’s aimed at find it acceptable.

So why the thread then? You've asked if it's racist and you seem to think it is. No need to ask. If you think it is, it's valid to you.

Restaurantlover · 22/05/2023 16:49

SpeckledlyHen · 22/05/2023 16:42

God it gets worse, so you actually agreed to pay a deposit but just didn't want to pay the deposit he asked for, so you blocked him and now claiming to be a victim of racism. Awful awful behaviour

It was after he asked for a 50% deposit, it was at the very end of our discussions, I told him he made no mention of requiring a 50% deposit and that was never agreed or even mentioned.
I said, for fairness to both of us, that 20% would seem more appropriate, then he started messaging and prank calling the restaurant. Sending nasty messages etc.

It was never that I didn’t want to pay, it was that I had presence of being a legitimate company and he didn’t, I didn’t want to be scammed.

OP posts:
CrackerAndPudding · 22/05/2023 16:49

Not really @notgojira it would infer they are negotiating terms of a contract not yet in place.

EasterBreak · 22/05/2023 16:49

People were calling out his racism and that his post made no sense. He has deleted it now op it seems.

Why would anyone have to decide?! 😳

justteanbiscuits · 22/05/2023 16:53

A sole trader doesn't need to be registered on companies house, or you don't have to trade with the same name. He may also earn below the VAT limit. He has a proper website (with history), with prices on, and a physical address on there in central London.

He comes across as a dick, but you screwed him around. You should have taken his first call and told him at that point you didn't want to pay for a deposit and as such wouldn't be proceeding. You have cost him money by ignoring him and pretending to be on holiday.

Thank you, I hadn’t seen he’s deleted his post. I’ve had a few messages of support which is nice. Hopefully thats the end of the matter.

You're just trying any old hook to hope that he won't press it and think by shouting, 'racist' will be enough to frighten him into shutting up.

Transparent and no, he isn't racist. He is probably rightly angry that you agreed a date and now won't pay.

Did he lick all that about yachts, Dubai and Range Rovers off the floor or did you say all that shit?

I think you are in the wrong and so do you , otherwise you wouldn't be grasping at straws.

I quite agree.

OP has expanded on the issue even more (after the 2nd time) and it shows they spoke at length and he was probably in the right to expect payment.

Seems to me its why OP isn't bothered about what else he's saying but wanting to know if he could be tagged racist or not.

howrudeforme · 22/05/2023 16:53

What arse - and he posted this racist shit on his business Facebook page? Bonkers.

it looks like an order tbh but how could you even contemplate going through with it now if that’s what he posts.

your other suppliers won’t be affected at all. It’s a restaurant and suppliers are crying out for customers.

Redebs · 22/05/2023 16:54

Why did you pay a 20% deposit if you didn't want the tree?

StBernie · 22/05/2023 16:54

I agree it was a racist comment. It reminded me of the Jade Goody ‘poppadum’ comment on Big Brother years ago. Sorry you had to deal with that OP.

ffsnotagainandagain · 22/05/2023 16:55

Totally irrelevant but after some Facebook investigating I found your restaurant. Looks so good. Will deffo pay a visit next time I'm in the area (won't mention the drama though lol)

No, been here ages. Do you know that you can change your name regularly and should, in fact, do so

People are weird when they declare "first time poster" , thinking tthey've done detective work, on a site where you can change names.
