Is this incredibly racist or am I being sensitive

Have had to nc as incredibly outing.

I enquired about a blossom tree installation in my restaurant, someone got back to me with a quote and I said great what’s his timescales. He let me know a date and I told him it would be suitable but nothing yet agreed.
Next thing I know he says he requires a 50% deposit because he’s ordered the blossom for the tree.
I never asked him to order the blossom, never agreed that the work would actually be done and certainly didn’t agree to give him 50% upfront.

I’ve had to block him as he is continuously ringing and messaging me and is just being plain nasty, to both my husband and I.

I think he’s gone a step too far with this Facebook post though, the reference to scrubbing korma pans and polishing shoes just gets to me, I feel he’s being racist, we have an Indian restaurant but I don’t actually go/work there so he’s obviously made that up to be spiteful.

contract/deposit etc aside, the comments were racist and nasty. Why mention Korma? - to make quite sure everyone knows the ethnicity of the customer. Why mention/make up the fact they were in Dubai and own a Range Rover. Rich Asian trope. Awful man.

botanicalart · 22/05/2023 18:43

The food is not the same so I would like to know if its Bangladeshi or Pakistani. Which I do not eat as the oil content is very high in these places.

Clarity is always good. A greek restaurant does not call itself German or Italian though they are on the same continent.

HRTQueen · 22/05/2023 18:44

He is being racist the comments are this is what those type of people ‘do and hope others would join in

why he didn’t get a full confirmation on dates/payments before purchasing is him being foolish it’s not your problem he can’t run a business

bellac11 · 22/05/2023 18:46

I didnt know visiting Dubai was some sort of 'rich Asian trope' as someone has said. I associate visitors to Dubai as being pretty morally dubious types with more money than sense, a bit chavvy also. I took that to be his meaning, that they're flaky types (his narrative being that OP flaked out on their agreement) with money to burn and therefore could afford what she'd ordered.

Do many people of Indian heritage visit Dubai?

If its a bog standard British Indian Restaurant, most of the base sauces are the same, give or take. Theres loads of recipe books out there to recreate the dishes.

candlelighter · 22/05/2023 18:48

Blatantly racist. And I have a thick skin!

LilacOpal · 22/05/2023 18:52

I think the comments on scrubbing korma pans and shoes are quite racist. It seems an unnecessary level of detail, intended to paint a very specific picture of a brown-skinned drudge.

He jumped the gun on making the tree, should've actually waited for the money. Perhaps you were unclear and there was some misunderstanding on the business terms but that does not change the fact that he's been highly unprofessional.

Spreadbed · 22/05/2023 18:56

I don’t really know about the contract and all the rest of it, but you’re right OP, he was being racist. What he said is not true, and the use of the term korma (which is completely irrelevant to the scrubbing and the rest of the post) is used to subtly highlight that OP and her husband are not white. It’s disgusting.

I’m actually very shocked at how many people on this thread can’t see that.

The comment sounds specific not prejudicial against other people with similar characteristics / same place of residence or types of pots to clean. So doesn't meet my test for racist.

I don't understand saying he made the blossom tree before he got a deposit. Who would do that?

God is spelled with a capital G and if you were truly God fearing you'd know that.

You didn't even visit the site - how could you even know the measurements of what needed doing?

Regardless, your comments on Facebook were racist.

You should never start work without the deposit. I'm afraid that's on you. People are allowed to change their minds which is why you get a deposit first. If they change their minds they lose the deposit.

Have you been harassing and prank calling them? I feel like from this post of yours you probably have

Butchyrestingface · 22/05/2023 19:01

I think it's possible for two things to be true at once, eg:

  1. He's a nasty bastard
  2. You had a verbal contract with him, which you reneged on.

That said, not only does he sound like a nasty bastard, but more worryingly, an UNHINGED one. There's a way to deal with people reneging on contracts if you believe that what they've done, and this ain't it.

I think I'd be giving the Old Bill a call.

Again, you shouldn't have ordered anything before getting a deposit.

It’s such a mistake to order anything without a deposit.

Not sure I'd pay £12k for it, to be honest.

@Skidmark123

Anyone who uses the phrase "playing the race card" is clearly a racist!

And look how many people (the majority) do think you were racist. I’d be doing a course in business communication if I were you…

IClaudine · 22/05/2023 19:04

What a strange choice of username...

I reckon this thread will be zapped soon for one reason or another.

InBeautifulKindWays · 22/05/2023 19:04

Racist and shit businessman. Who would use this company? What a loser. 🤣

Evaka · 22/05/2023 19:05

The korma pans remark is horrible. But the person sounds totally unhinged in the post. Ignore and move on with your life.

Intarestine · 22/05/2023 19:05

Waiting for the deletion message at this point.

The drama has turned up a notch.

The phrase 'play the race card' is actually pretty racist. Mr Skidmark.
I was one poster who thought that the 'korma pans' reference was purely factual, but in the light of the above, I'm having doubts.

Can you shed any light on the Dubai holiday photos and the washing pans photos? Do you have the pictures?
