Feel this way about the death of Andy Rourke of The Smiths. They are one of my favourite bands of all time and just listening to them now. He was such a talented musician, he's the same age as my father, and I feel sad knowing he had such a cruel disease.

Victoria Wood was such a loss.
Amy Winehouse was a tragic waste. When she was clearly deteriorating Caitlin Moran said that you could see all of the brilliant albums she would make disappearing like the photographs in Back To The Future.
I was very sad when Liz Sladen (Sarah Jane from Doctor Who) died. She was such a part of my youth and she had made such a triumphant return to Doctor Who.
I remember as a teenager being devastated when Richard Beckindale (Porridge/Rising Damp) died. He was only 31 and it seemed impossible to me that someone so you and full of life could just drop dead.

DogsvsCats · 22/05/2023 16:03

Victoria Wood
Paul O Grady
Cilla Black

All backdrops of childhood- light hearted entertainers, clever & witty.

StonwEd · 22/05/2023 16:06

Taylor Hawkins. I’ve never felt anything like it for someone I don’t know. Grew up listening to the band and following them around and watching the love between them all. Over a year later it still hurts so much

HarrietPierce · 22/05/2023 16:44

Leonard Cohen

I am still upset about Prince. The fact that a man who was loved by so many, could die completely alone was heartbreaking for me.

Michael Landon - I loved Little House on the Prairie and the very cheesy angel programme, and he represented an ideal, twinkly eyed Dad figure to me. I was about 18 when he died and it was the Summer I left home so it is all caught up with end of my childhood/adolescence.

Vincent Hanley - he was an Irish tv presenter who presented the best music show ever shown on RTE - the highlight of my rural early teen weekends.

I remember Fab Vinnie. He also worked for Capital Radio in the summer. Way too young.

DurhamDurham · 22/05/2023 17:02

David Bowie

I woke up to the news on the radio and texts coming through from friends and I was just so incredibly sad. I saw him a dozen times in concert over the years and was still holding out for seeing him live again (although v unlikely, I refused to give up hope)
It was a sad day, got to work late eating my Bowie tshirt and went down to Brixton to see the memorial as soon as I was able to.

I listened to Blackstar before he died but I haven't listened to it since. I was a fan from when I was 12 and I'm mid fifties now.

porridgeisbae · 22/05/2023 17:13

Oh and Amy Winehouse of course. (I'm sure someone will've mentioned. ) Not a surprise as she was clearly so unwell, but still a shame.

lieselotte · 22/05/2023 17:17

I was upset about Jo Cox as well.

And Elizabeth Sladen.

and I've been following Laura Nuttall's story and am very sorry that she has died, although I guess she became a "celebrity" (doesn't seem like the right word) because of her illness, like Deborah James. But 23 is stupidly young to die.

Kazzyhoward · 22/05/2023 18:47

Olivia Newton John. Expected but still such a shock when it was announced, and even more tear jerking have been all the heartfelt tributes from those who knew her best.

Terry Pratchett. Such a brilliant writer and he not only died much too soon but in the last years of his life he had Alzheimer's and lost his incredible way with words. So cruel.

I came here to say that too. But a man is not dead while his name is still spoken or while the ripples that he left in the world continue, so we can take comfort in that, @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g

Whowahway123 · 22/05/2023 18:50

Avicii - his ‘Wake me up’ lyrics are so poignant looking back. He was really struggling but no one seen it.

But I only have two hands
Hope I get the chance to travel the world
But I don't have any plans
Wish that I could stay forever this young
Not afraid to close my eyes ~~~~
Tidsleytiddy · 22/05/2023 19:05

David Bowie. I cried all evening
Victoria Wood.
Paul O’Grady

Knavesmirelass · 22/05/2023 19:15

Ayrton Senna, it was one of the worst weekends in F1 history and his death was a massive loss and I can still remember it all now.
In more recent times the road racer William Dunlop. The Dunlops had so much tragedy in their lives and it was devastating when he was killed and I sobbed like a bairn that day thinking of his mum and Grannie who had lived through losing Robert and Joey racing as well.

Indeed. Must see if I have any lilac for Thursday.

CharlotteRumpling · 22/05/2023 19:25

Naya Rivera. Not that I was such a huge fan, though I liked her on Glee. Just the horrible way she died.

shellyleppard · 22/05/2023 19:26

Freddie Mercury. Such a talent and a beautiful person. I still get choked up now when I talk about him. Also Shirley Hughes and Judith kerr...... both fantastic author's who my children loved when small x

Littlegoth · 22/05/2023 19:30

And Julian Sands. A year ago today I was getting selfies and autographs signed by him. He was so full of life. The way he went was so unpredictable and reminded me that life is so fragile

CreeperBoom · 22/05/2023 19:34

Peaches Geldof. Such a sad, lost little girl, leaving behind such young children.

Allschoolsareartschools · 22/05/2023 19:34

Jill Dando, such a brutal killing. I was so shocked to hear that awful news.
Stephen Gately, so sad & unexpected.

Vicliz24 · 22/05/2023 19:36

The ones I cried for were
Ayrton Senna
Freddie Mercury
Bowie
Leonard Cohen
Taylor Hawkins
The Queen and Phillip
Paula Yates

SusanSHelit · 22/05/2023 19:38

Another one for terry pratchett. I have one or two of his books left unread, I can't bring myself to read them and know I will never be able to read another of his books for the first time ever again.

Chester Bennington. Saved so many people but couldn't be saved himself

Vgbeat · 22/05/2023 19:38

Robin Williams and Heath Ledger. I loved Robin he was a massive part of my childhood and still makes me sad now.

LaMaG · 22/05/2023 19:38

Gerry Ryan, huge name on Irish radio. Died at 53. Not that I was a huge fan but it was a shock. And Princess Diana too obviously, most shocking one ever. I was in US and they interrupted broadcast to announce it. My pals all started ringing home, no one knew yet at home.

Whatkindofuckeryisthis · 22/05/2023 19:39

Rik Mayall and Amy Winehouse.
