Feel this way about the death of Andy Rourke of The Smiths. They are one of my favourite bands of all time and just listening to them now. He was such a talented musician, he's the same age as my father, and I feel sad knowing he had such a cruel disease.

The Knowledge is a really good TV play, written by Jack Rosenthal. I've wondered recently whether black cab drivers in London still have to go through this test, now that they have satnav and so much competition from Uber.

Yes! First thing I saw Nigel Hawthorne in. David Ryall, too - I never did know his name, I always called him Titanic whatever role he played. 😆

@CagneyandLacy it's on YouTube!

Ditto to Freddie Mercury
And (long ago now) Rudolf Nureyev.

And the Queen. Such a ‘permanent’ seeming fixture ever since I could remember, I.e. 1953/4.

Funny I was thinking of Nureyev, I have always wondered what more he would have achieved, he was an excellent choreographer and had so much more to give to the ballet world

Jeremy Hardy. I'm glad I was working from home the day I found out, I just burst into tears. I have old series of the News Quiz downloaded and listening to them is such a comfort blanket; it's so bittersweet though as he jokes so much about (unknowingly) being at the end of his life. It still makes me so sad knowing that he's gone.

Not famous to most people (unless they like obscure Japanese rock music) but the death of my favourite singer Daisuke Ochida still gets to me. One of his band names is my username on here.

He was only 32 and had a heart condition that meant he could die at any time but the small amount of information online when he died seemed to suggest it may have been suicide or accidental overdose 💔

I hope if there is something after death that he has found peace

Victoria Wood, I'm still pissed off and miss her very much.
Sad for Sinead O' Conner that she couldn't find peace of mind in this world, she was a warrior.

It really threw me when Peaches Geldof died. I thought about it for ages, it was just so tragic and I was so upset because she seemed to have gotten her life in order and be happy.

Then I found out about how she died and I was reeling and devastated

beguilingeyes · 08/10/2023 13:09

Nureyev for me too. I saw him dance quite a few times and met him at the stage door where he was very sweet.
His funeral with all the dancers dropping ballet shoes on his coffin was so moving.
It's really sad to think that if he and Freddie (Queen were the first band I saw in 1977) had lived a few more years they could have been treated.

Douglas Adams.
Brilliant mind, wonderful imagination and full of humour and delight.

Olivia Newton John. I never cry, but I did for ONJ, lots!

Some of my earliest memories are of her on UK weekend chat shows and variety shows (I was around 8 or 9 when she was on TV virtually every weekend), so I kind of "grew up" with her in my teens, following her music etc. She was such a beautiful person, inside and out, lovely personality, did huge amounts of good for charities, nature and animals, including setting up her own cancer wellness centre in Melbourne. She battled cancer for 20 years, whilst continuing to write and record music, continue her concerts, even doing a charity walk along the Great Wall of China with other celebrities to raise money for her wellness centre. No one ever had a bad word about her which is pretty unique in the music industry! She was universally loved.

It was obvious she was coming to the end after news of her third bout of cancer, "retiring" from doing concerts, and then in early 2022, she disappeared completely, no interviews, no webcam chats, etc, so it was clear she was struggling. But it still hit like a freight train when the news of her death was announced. I still well up when I think of her or hear some of my favourite songs of hers.

Paul O'Grady
He was such a nice, down to earth man who never forgot where he came from and never got above himself.
Patrick Swayze. Was quite a big fan, and it just really upset me!

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 12/10/2023 13:24

Amy winehouse's death still really gets to me. I saw her about a year before she died and she was really good but I felt her pain. I was talking to DD about her the other day.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 12/10/2023 13:25

And although it was years before my time-James Dean. What a gorgeous man with a bright future. My mum said she went to school the next day and all the girls were in bits crying.

nanodyne · 12/10/2023 14:43

Chester Bennington from Linkin Park, they were the first "proper" band I got into as a kid and their music really affected me as a teen.

Mummypigisalwaysright · 12/10/2023 14:49

Terry Pratchett, Alan rickman and Stephen Gateley from boyzone. I had such a crush on Stephen as a teenager, and I still remember the exact day I found out. I was devastated!

YouLando · 12/10/2023 15:05

I felt gutted at hearing about Hilary Mantel's death last year. Still can't quite believe that she'll never write another book.

Peaches Geldof. We were a similar age and given she had young children, one of whom was in the house along with her when she overdosed really shook me. She had been receiving methadone treatment and seemed to relapse without many people knowing. It just felt tragic.

Terry Hall, I grew up with his music, his sounds trigger so many memories for me. He was fantastic.
