correct weight

7 months ago I had covid. I lost half a stone. Before covid I weighed 10 stone . I went down to 9 stone 7. Movng forward I decided to cut out eating sugar for 4 weeks and when I weighed myself at the end of the period, I had dropped some weighted and weighed in at 9 stone 4. All good or so I thought.

I had a text from my GP surgery to have my blood pressure done. Whilst I was there, the nurse said would you like me to check your height and weight and I said yes please. She checked my height and I was 5 foot 6 and asked me to get on the scales. She said the weight was in kg which I could not understand so she converted it to stones and told me I was 10 stone 2. I said that is impossible because I weighed myself this morning first thing with no clothes and no food and I weighed 9 stone 3 and I have definately lost weight since I had coved etc and my arms and face definately look thinner and my clothes are lose. She said oh these are not digital scales so she said come with me and we went to another room and I got on the digital scales and it was a difference of 2 pounds so she said I was 1 was 10 stone.

I said no I weighed myself this morning and I was half a stone lighter. She said how old are your scales and I said about 7 years old so she said they are probably too old to be accurate so buy some new scales.

Sorry but pre covid I was 10 stone and I have most definately dropped weight so I think her scales are not accurate. I weigh myself on a hard surface the same surface as the nurse weighed me in the surgery.

After I left I went to Argos and bought some new scales. They cost me £12 which I was reluctant to pay because I did not see how my ones could be so inaccurate. I will weigh myself in the morning as I did this morning, first thing, no clothes no food and with an empty bladder and if I reach the same weight as I did today then I wm taking the new scales back to Argos and getting a refund because that will prove that I do not need to buy new scales and that there is nothing wrong with the ones I have been using up to now.

ok I was wearing clothes at the surgery and had some breakfast but the nurse said it should not be too much different because I was wearing a very thin dress but it was difference of 71b

Any advce. There is NO WAY I am 10 stone

And I agree that you do sound obsessed.

Emptying your bladder and removing your clothes to weigh yourself?

Have a word with yourself about that.

talking about time of day. I weighed myself this morning at 8am. I was 9 stone 3. My appointment at the surgery was at 10am and they said I was 10 stone. I dont think so🙄

Trust me, that would be entirely within expected parameters. Especially when you factor in a small amount of variance between two different pairs of scales.

CheezePleeze · 19/05/2023 14:05

Very easy to add half a stone to the weight of a person just by getting dressed and having breakfast and a drink.

STOP IT!! 🤣🤣🤣

TheKeatingFive · 19/05/2023 14:12

OP, I hear you. I'd be exactly the same. But I think a degree of variation in scales is pretty normal.

There were some very kind scales in my old workplace, which lured me into a flattering perception of what I weighed. I was brought back down to earth when I got some electronic ones for home. 😭

OMGdidIreallyseethat · 19/05/2023 14:14

We got new scales. I weighed exactly two pounds more on the new ones. Weigh on the old. Walk over to new. Up two pounds in less than ten seconds. Both sit on a whole tile each in the same bathroom.

So you weighed yourself first thing in the morning, no clothes, no food, empty bladder.

Then you went to the dr and got weighed, with clothes and after you had eaten, a couple of hours later in the morning.

For me, that can add 4-6lbs (and I'm a normal weight).

It would only need your scales to be out by a couple of lbs for this to completely make sense. It's normal for scales to be out by a tiny amount like that.

If your scales are 7 years old they are more likely to be inaccurate than the ones at the Dr's which will be regularly checked and recalibrated.

If they are not concerned about your weight then it's really not that big a deal. You sound like you are obsessing over this. If you feel and look healthy then all is good.

Also, you would have to weigh yourself at 10am, after breakfast, with clothes, for it to be comparable to your weight at the doctor's. There is no point in weighing yourself tomorrow with no clothes and before food, that's not what you are comparing to.

Comedycook · 19/05/2023 14:17

Scales are weird things. The ones in my grandma's house always made me a stone lighter than the ones in my house.

MistressE · 19/05/2023 14:19

There is NO WAY I am 10 stone

yeah OP, there REALLY is!! 😂

kittensinthekitchen · 19/05/2023 14:20

The difference between 9st 3lb and 10 stone is 11lbs, not 7.

MistressE · 19/05/2023 14:21

Treat yourself to another set of scales

Pop boots and use their scales

either way it’s so daft that you argued the toss with the GP standing in front of a likely far superior scale to your scale

MistressE · 19/05/2023 14:22

I went through the monopause 12 years ago. I was telling everyone oh I am now 9 stone 4

I am sure everyone was positively riveted

Booklover40 · 19/05/2023 14:24

If your scales are wrong then you wouldn’t have been 10 stone before you were ill but more like 10.7. Surely that’s obvious?

CatchYouOnTheFlippetyFlop · 19/05/2023 14:27

Chill out OP. Jeez!

It is entirely possible to weigh heavier with clothes on, empty bladder and empty stomach with your last meal prior to breakfast being around 12 hours or more.

After drinks also.

If you drink a litre of water, you will be the equivalent of a litre heavier on the scales, but it doesn't mean you have put weight on.

IncompleteSenten · 19/05/2023 14:31

Tbh it's more likely that 7 year old scales are wrong than it is that two sets of scales at a doctor's surgery are but you've got the new scales now so you can see in the morning.
Maybe do one wearing what you were wearing today just to see.

It's not a massive deal really though. It's a few pounds. Don't upset yourself about it

Iwantmyoldnameback · 19/05/2023 14:32

You'd better go and tell everyone you have unwittingly misled them, they will be absolutely fascinated.

MrFlobby · 19/05/2023 14:34

Don’t see the point in weighing yourself in the morning just weigh now. Either you’ll be under 10 stone or you won’t be 🤷🏼‍♀️

AllGussiedUp · 19/05/2023 14:37

Why does it matter?

I've never understood this either.

No-one's going to pass me on my way to work in the morning and think, "Oh look, Mrs Doyle looks about 2lbs lighter. She must've just had a shit" Confused

CC4712 · 19/05/2023 14:43

I was telling everyone oh I am now 9 stone 4 WHY??? I can guarantee that these people you tell couldn't care less!

You do realise that medical equipment needs to be calibrated often, to ensure it is accurate?

SundaeLove · 19/05/2023 14:45

Dazedandbemused0 · 19/05/2023 13:44

😂 I don’t know why but this really tickled me

Me too! 😂

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 19/05/2023 14:47

Just here for the update...

ItsAFact · 19/05/2023 14:48

Just face it, you’re 10 stone. Deal with it.

CatchYouOnTheFlippetyFlop · 19/05/2023 14:48

SundaeLove · 19/05/2023 14:45

I think it's because the OP is absolutely FEWMIN' 😂

BarbaraofSeville · 19/05/2023 14:49

I never realised that people cared so much.

I understand looking in the mirror and thinking 'I look fat, so want to lose weight' or being concerned about being overweight due for health reasons, but I didn't realise that people fixated on the number, for numbers sake.

OP you haven't said anything about whether you are happy about your appearance, or concerned about your health, quite the opposite, you say you know you look slimmer, and you sound healthy.

So why the obsession with your weight being below a certain number? Is this some weird 'women tend to weigh 8 or 9 stone' notion, that's not true anyway? Just look around you. You can tell by looking at people that a good amount of them weigh over 10 stone.
