correct weight

7 months ago I had covid. I lost half a stone. Before covid I weighed 10 stone . I went down to 9 stone 7. Movng forward I decided to cut out eating sugar for 4 weeks and when I weighed myself at the end of the period, I had dropped some weighted and weighed in at 9 stone 4. All good or so I thought.

I had a text from my GP surgery to have my blood pressure done. Whilst I was there, the nurse said would you like me to check your height and weight and I said yes please. She checked my height and I was 5 foot 6 and asked me to get on the scales. She said the weight was in kg which I could not understand so she converted it to stones and told me I was 10 stone 2. I said that is impossible because I weighed myself this morning first thing with no clothes and no food and I weighed 9 stone 3 and I have definately lost weight since I had coved etc and my arms and face definately look thinner and my clothes are lose. She said oh these are not digital scales so she said come with me and we went to another room and I got on the digital scales and it was a difference of 2 pounds so she said I was 1 was 10 stone.

I said no I weighed myself this morning and I was half a stone lighter. She said how old are your scales and I said about 7 years old so she said they are probably too old to be accurate so buy some new scales.

Sorry but pre covid I was 10 stone and I have most definately dropped weight so I think her scales are not accurate. I weigh myself on a hard surface the same surface as the nurse weighed me in the surgery.

After I left I went to Argos and bought some new scales. They cost me £12 which I was reluctant to pay because I did not see how my ones could be so inaccurate. I will weigh myself in the morning as I did this morning, first thing, no clothes no food and with an empty bladder and if I reach the same weight as I did today then I wm taking the new scales back to Argos and getting a refund because that will prove that I do not need to buy new scales and that there is nothing wrong with the ones I have been using up to now.

ok I was wearing clothes at the surgery and had some breakfast but the nurse said it should not be too much different because I was wearing a very thin dress but it was difference of 71b

Any advce. There is NO WAY I am 10 stone

Personal trainer here. I weigh people for a living.

Weight can vary throughout the day for all sorts of reasons. The average adult's weight fluctuates by up to five or six pounds (in either direction) during the course of a single day. A variation of seven pounds wouldn't be out of the realms of normal. I'm surprised a nurse didn't know this.

Also calibrations on scales can be a little bit out too.

I wouldn't worry. So what if you are ten stone? Your clothes fit, you feel healthy, job jobbed.

You are more than a number on a dial.

MatildaTheCat · 19/05/2023 13:10

Haha, sorry I know you’re not laughing but I’m a daily weigher and had a hospital appointment a couple of weeks ago where they weighed me at a good 2-3 kg than I was in the morning. It really pissed me off! However I did know I was being a silly billy and literally nobody in the entire world cares what I weigh.

Just use your normal scales and crack on with life. 😊

It's all about body fat, not weight. But you can weigh 7 lbs heavier depending on what time of the day and/or were you are in your cycle. I'm post menopause I still get hormonal fluctuations in weight. Have you got a history of high blood pressure? What did that show?

I went through the monopause 12 years ago. I was telling everyone oh I am now 9 stone 4

talking about time of day. I weighed myself this morning at 8am. I was 9 stone 3. My appointment at the surgery was at 10am and they said I was 10 stone. I dont think so🙄

When you say you were 10 stone before COVID, was that on your own scales or the surgery's?

If it was on your own, then maybe you were 10.5 stone and have still lost 10lbs?

Havinganap · 19/05/2023 13:43

Did she tell you your weight in kg? Is it possible that she conveyed it incorrectly?

Who knows. Maybe you weight differently on your floor and the doctors floor. If you want to know weight yourself somewhere else.

It doesn't really matter though does it because you're not overweight at either weight.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 19/05/2023 13:44

I was weighed at the GP during a health check this week
I was a kg less than my bathroom scales but they allow a kg for clothing and shoes
I have however gained 8lbs due to Amitryptiline so I do feel a bit uncomfortable anyway
Concentrate on the fact you're fit and healthy Scales really don't matter

Dazedandbemused0 · 19/05/2023 13:44

😂 I don’t know why but this really tickled me

JollyMollyPolly · 19/05/2023 13:44

Doctors scales are usually calibrated so more likely to be correct.

TorringtonDean · 19/05/2023 13:44

Doctors scales and gym scales always weight heavier than homes ones in my experience - often a couple of stones more! I’d be happy to be your weight. Sounds like you have no weight problem whatsoever.

Why are you going around telling everyone how much you weigh? Confused

You sound very obsessed with weight, it’s not a good thing.

User19844666884 · 19/05/2023 13:47

All this shows is that you can’t compare your scales with the ones at the Dr. That’s all. So just look at the difference with individual scales as a benchmark. Whatever your scales read now, if they later read a half stone heavier then you have gained half a stone, or if they read half a stone lighted me then you have lost. But don’t compare yours to the Drs, they are clearly not that accurate.

Toottooot · 19/05/2023 13:48

Wooptie fucking ping.

SallyWD · 19/05/2023 13:49

I usually weigh myself naked first thing in the morning. If I weigh myself (again naked) at bedtime after a day's food and drink I can be half a stone more! I've also noticed I'm heavier if I weigh myself after my morning coffee (before even eating anything).
I can imagine if you'd had some food and drink and were dressed at the doctors you could be well over half a stone more. Plus using different scales.

They're both just a number, that are quite meaningless on their own. What is your apparent aversion to weighing 10 stone? It's within the healthy BMI range, for what it's worth, so your doctor won't be suggesting that you lose weight.

Your blood pressure is 'that of a 20 YO' which suggests that you are fit and active.

I bet if you looked at a group of post menopausal women who were 5'6 tall, you'd be one of the slimmer, healthier ones, by far.

I'm only slightly taller than you and weigh 13 stone. Even if I was 'lean' I probably couldn't get lower than 11 stone as I have wide hips and long muscular legs, but I could definitely do with losing around 20 pounds of fat. Does that make you feel any better about weighing as much as '10 stone' as if it's some great weight?

MeandT · 19/05/2023 13:53

What @Oysterbabe & @JuneShitfield said.... 2 drinks 2 lbs, 2 shoes 2lbs, 2 meals 2lb.

Bit of leeway for flooring & clothes and there's your difference. It's not like the number at the surgery is way out of the healthy weight range for your height is it?

You sound a right PITA going round telling everyone what you weight tho!

Get over your inner Bridget Jones & if you're exercising, lifting some weight (bodyweight even) regularly - as you're post-menopause, and feeling good in your clothes, what does it matter what the number is?

BarbaraofSeville · 19/05/2023 13:55

Well quite, you've got the weight of you, and that of a mug of coffee in your stomach, that wasn't there when you weighed yourself the first time. Just because you weigh half a pound more, doesn't mean you've somehow got half a pound more body fat, which is what we should be concerned about when we weigh ourselves, because of the health detriment of carrying too much body fat.

I'm professionally interested in metrology (the science of measuring things, not the weather) and if you approach getting on scales as a scientific exercise, you see 10 stone, and it tells you not that a person weighs 10 stone, but at best, that person weighs somewhere between 9.5 and 10.5 stone.

Because of all the variables, a single measurement doesn't tell you anything more than that, even before you get to variation between scales, that's just due to variation in hydration, contents of digestive system etc.

WheelsUp · 19/05/2023 13:55

Next time use the scales at somewhere like Boots for an accurate reading.

Countrywellies · 19/05/2023 13:56

10 stone at 5”6 is a healthy bmi so it shouldn’t matter. Just ignore the doctors scale. They got the data needed.

what kind of shoes/ drinks/ meals weigh 2lb?

OP you are on a slippery slope to being obsessed if not there already
Your body will change and your weight fluctuate as is normal in life

Why would you go round telling everyone your weight? That's a really weird and annoying thing to do.

If I were you I would throw your scales away, don't replace them, and stop thinking, talking and generally obsessing about your weight.

MrsDoylesDoily · 19/05/2023 14:02

I don't see the issue here. If you're convinced you weigh 9 stone 3 then that should be good enough.

It's not like the Dr was telling you that you need to lose weight.

LivC19 · 19/05/2023 14:02

Weighing in your birthday suit before any water or food by any chance, and after a big wee (even a number 2, dare I say)? Nope? Just me then… Admittedly I haven’t read the thread as I really wouldn’t worry about this. Either this or you have a friendly set of scales or friendly tiles. 😁

I wouldn’t worry about that margin of error/margin for you to gain water weight as the day goes on etc.

BarbaraofSeville · 19/05/2023 14:03

Er, all of them. Have you never weighed anything?

A pint of water weighs over a pound
Shoes will easily weigh 1 to 2 pounds
A ready meal or tin of soup, so small meals, weigh just less than a pound each
A pair of jeans will weigh a pound or two

Very easy to add half a stone to the weight of a person just by getting dressed and having breakfast and a drink.
