correct weight

7 months ago I had covid. I lost half a stone. Before covid I weighed 10 stone . I went down to 9 stone 7. Movng forward I decided to cut out eating sugar for 4 weeks and when I weighed myself at the end of the period, I had dropped some weighted and weighed in at 9 stone 4. All good or so I thought.

I had a text from my GP surgery to have my blood pressure done. Whilst I was there, the nurse said would you like me to check your height and weight and I said yes please. She checked my height and I was 5 foot 6 and asked me to get on the scales. She said the weight was in kg which I could not understand so she converted it to stones and told me I was 10 stone 2. I said that is impossible because I weighed myself this morning first thing with no clothes and no food and I weighed 9 stone 3 and I have definately lost weight since I had coved etc and my arms and face definately look thinner and my clothes are lose. She said oh these are not digital scales so she said come with me and we went to another room and I got on the digital scales and it was a difference of 2 pounds so she said I was 1 was 10 stone.

I said no I weighed myself this morning and I was half a stone lighter. She said how old are your scales and I said about 7 years old so she said they are probably too old to be accurate so buy some new scales.

Sorry but pre covid I was 10 stone and I have most definately dropped weight so I think her scales are not accurate. I weigh myself on a hard surface the same surface as the nurse weighed me in the surgery.

After I left I went to Argos and bought some new scales. They cost me £12 which I was reluctant to pay because I did not see how my ones could be so inaccurate. I will weigh myself in the morning as I did this morning, first thing, no clothes no food and with an empty bladder and if I reach the same weight as I did today then I wm taking the new scales back to Argos and getting a refund because that will prove that I do not need to buy new scales and that there is nothing wrong with the ones I have been using up to now.

ok I was wearing clothes at the surgery and had some breakfast but the nurse said it should not be too much different because I was wearing a very thin dress but it was difference of 71b

Any advce. There is NO WAY I am 10 stone

I weight 8st 1lb first thing in the morning and by 10.00am I am 11st 6lb. I am wondering if it’s the concrete cornflakes I’m having for breakfast?

Seriously OP, whatever various scales read it’s all with in the healthy range. The best thing you could do is chuck out the scales and don’t buy new ones.

I’m like this! I identify as an 8 stone 1 person personally. 😁 And don’t let any doctor’s scales say otherwise!

You sound completely bonkers. Why does it matter so much? Just weigh yourself now on the new scales & you’ll have a good idea. I’d trust the doctors scales over your 7 year old ones anyway.

OP's posts are exclusively bonkers and argumentative.

Flute56 · 20/05/2023 02:17

since when was if ok to bully someone for having their point of view? You do not have to agree with what someone says but to call them bonkers if a form of bullying. ok some people like to know what the numbers on the scale says. The nurse who saw me earlier just said buy some more scales. It would not have been professional of her to say something detrimental to me about the difference in weight readings. People deserve to be treated with respect whatever their failings or shortcomings are so I will leave this thread now and think twice about ever posting on mumsnet again

Did you use your new scales or not?

HairyKitty · 20/05/2023 06:50

I wonder what new scales will say. Unfortunately for op I think it’s most likely somewhere between the two so like 9st 10

sparklefresh · 20/05/2023 07:16

This is mad. Why does the number matter? You're within a healthy range, so what's the problem?

Sartre · 20/05/2023 07:21

10 stone is a perfect weight at your height anyway so why are you even bothered about this?

IncompleteSenten · 20/05/2023 07:25

Before you go could you at least tell us if your old scales were wrong?

Truthfully.

DreamItDoIt · 20/05/2023 07:57

If you have scales at home why do people get their weight and height checked at the doctors? I know I need to loose a few pounds and I don't need to be told by an often overweight nurse that I need to loose weight and then be given the frankly rubbish healthy editing advise by the NHS!

Just stick to weighing yourself at home OP, I don't think your height will change Smile so stick with what you know!

HairyKitty · 20/05/2023 09:42

It matters because if someone has struggled with their weight and worked really hard to lose 4 or 5lbs, only to be told that they actually weigh more than they did when they started, this would be disheartening and upsetting for many people (if any of the unsupportive posters can actually put themselves in someone else’s place for 2 minutes!)

CC4712 · 20/05/2023 09:47

OP- Are you going to tell us what the new scales say today then?

And it matters if you are massively struggling with your weight and someone insists on telling you they are 9 stone 4.

Lingfield01 · 20/05/2023 15:07

If your clothes fit and you’re eating healthily then what’s the issue here? So what if your scales show a different weight. You seem more stressed at the idea of weighing 10st more than anything else.

fishonabicycle · 20/05/2023 15:18

First of all, it really doesn't matter - you know if you feel comfortable with your weight; second of all, perhaps your scales are out but half a stone, not the GP's? Third of all, they might both be wrong!

eyesfullofstars · 20/05/2023 15:45

What has the way Kate Middleton looks got to do with whether your scales are accurate? Confused

JudgeRudy · 20/05/2023 15:54

Yes, I was too focused on her trying to get z refund

I actually agree that you're getting an unfair reception here. Your challenge isn't about whether you are too fat/thin or bigger/smaller, it's about the laws of physics. You have 3 sets of scales with 3 sets of readings. The 2 at the surgery are close but your scales are showing considerably less. I get that must be perplexing. I mean if scales 'go off' how would you even know.
Sounds like you have a good sense of where your body's at weight wise but I must admit,I'm curious too what your scales read now. I'm inclined to go with the 2 surgery readings. There scales won't be £12 from Argos and they'll calibrated regularly. If you do buy a new set and actually use them, you shouldn't be trying to return them to the shop.
If you weigh yourself elsewhere update us.

TorringtonDean · 20/05/2023 17:01

I am considerably overweight - and battling it. The gym and GP scales always say a lot more. It is upsetting but one of those things. I can wobble around on the home scales and be considerably lighter!

I weighed myself on my original scales this morning and it said I was 9 stone 2. I had 2 cups of tea and some egg on toast and then put on the thin dress again and jumped on the sacles and was still 9 stone 2 from kitchen. I moved the scales into the hall where I have a wooden floor and it still said 9 stone 2.

I went out to Boots and wanted to try their weigh machine. I did not know the machine also took note of your height as well. I paid the money and jumped on the scales and the reading said I was 10 stone and had a height of 5 foot 4. The nurse did my height on her height chart measurement thing and said I was 5 foot 6. I also have osteoperosis and had to have a bone density scan recently to see if the medicaation i take for osteoperosis was working. They said there was some improvement in the bone density and took my height because they said with osteoperosis you can lose height. They said I was 5 foot 6. That was at the NHS clinic that does bone density scanning.

I did a quick research online and it said that sometimes the boots weight and height machines are sometimes wrong

Ive not used the new scales yet. I will try the new scales at home later.

I have never had a problem with my weight. I have never been overweight

So if the (calibrated, medical) scales at the doctor and the (calibrated, medical) scales at Boots both say the same thing, do you not think it might just be your scales? Maybe they have been wrong for years and so you did lose weight from covid but we're heavier than you thought beforehand.

gamerchick · 20/05/2023 17:30

You're still not overweight OP. Can't understand why you went to boots rather than just use your new scales.

Let it go man. Chuck out the scales and go on your clothes.

I'd come to the same conclusion. Surgery x 2, plus Boots all within a few pounds. I'd say it's your scales that are out.
Particularly if money is tight, I'd consider what is the value of purchasing (any) scales. I think I got some scales as a wedding present. I can't remember the last time I owned any. I've gone up dress size in last 3 years. I know because my clothes are tight and I look bigger.

Agree.

@Flute56 it really doesn’t matter what number the scales say does it?

Have you experienced disordered eating in the past/now?

I used to weigh myself at work because the scales were recalibrated every 3 months (obviously I was fully clothed but wearing the same uniform/shoes).
The ones at home are a bit shit so I largely ignore the actual number but can see if I’ve gone up or down.

BodyKeepingScore · 20/05/2023 17:46

Three different scales are registering you as 10st. OP I think it's very clear what weight you are. Why is this so hard for you to accept. Surely the only scales that could possibly be wrong are your own if all the others put you at 10st... all three couldn't be wrong but show the same weight?

Mitchumforthewin · 20/05/2023 17:49

My guess is your scales have been wrong for a long time - you have lost weight, but it’s not taken you down as ‘low’ as you thought. But it doesn’t matter if you’ve lost the weight you wanted to to look/feel good.
I don’t own any scales and I haven’t for years but have a vague idea of what I weigh from the occasional drs trip etc. when I go to my mum’s she has some which I know are VERY deceptive - but because they are always deceptive, it’s still a good gauge of if I’ve put on/lost weight - the numbers themselves are wrong but I can still work out from that if I have been eating too much. Simple! Doesn’t matter if they’re not accurate in the actual number, as long as I feel ok. I only see her twice a year roughly as she lives a long way away and that’s enough for me.
My genuine advice would be to try and get rid of the scales, honestly. How heavy you are is irrelevant- it really is - it’s meaningless if you’re feeling good and aren’t overweight which you clearly aren’t. If your clothes fit well then that’s a good way of knowing if you’ve had too many pies recently. Throw them away and break free of the tyranny!
