7 months ago I had covid. I lost half a stone. Before covid I weighed 10 stone . I went down to 9 stone 7. Movng forward I decided to cut out eating sugar for 4 weeks and when I weighed myself at the end of the period, I had dropped some weighted and weighed in at 9 stone 4. All good or so I thought.

I had a text from my GP surgery to have my blood pressure done. Whilst I was there, the nurse said would you like me to check your height and weight and I said yes please. She checked my height and I was 5 foot 6 and asked me to get on the scales. She said the weight was in kg which I could not understand so she converted it to stones and told me I was 10 stone 2. I said that is impossible because I weighed myself this morning first thing with no clothes and no food and I weighed 9 stone 3 and I have definately lost weight since I had coved etc and my arms and face definately look thinner and my clothes are lose. She said oh these are not digital scales so she said come with me and we went to another room and I got on the digital scales and it was a difference of 2 pounds so she said I was 1 was 10 stone.

I said no I weighed myself this morning and I was half a stone lighter. She said how old are your scales and I said about 7 years old so she said they are probably too old to be accurate so buy some new scales.

Sorry but pre covid I was 10 stone and I have most definately dropped weight so I think her scales are not accurate. I weigh myself on a hard surface the same surface as the nurse weighed me in the surgery.

After I left I went to Argos and bought some new scales. They cost me £12 which I was reluctant to pay because I did not see how my ones could be so inaccurate. I will weigh myself in the morning as I did this morning, first thing, no clothes no food and with an empty bladder and if I reach the same weight as I did today then I wm taking the new scales back to Argos and getting a refund because that will prove that I do not need to buy new scales and that there is nothing wrong with the ones I have been using up to now.

ok I was wearing clothes at the surgery and had some breakfast but the nurse said it should not be too much different because I was wearing a very thin dress but it was difference of 71b

Any advce. There is NO WAY I am 10 stone

Is the flooring in your house uneven at all? If I weigh myself in different parts of my house it shows different each time. Maybe go to boots and use the scales they have?

Ponoka7 · 19/05/2023 11:33

It's all about body fat, not weight. But you can weigh 7 lbs heavier depending on what time of the day and/or were you are in your cycle. I'm post menopause I still get hormonal fluctuations in weight. Have you got a history of high blood pressure? What did that show?

Ponoka7 · 19/05/2023 11:35

Also we're you barefoot?

SocksAndTheCity · 19/05/2023 11:35

Is there a particular reason why you have to be a very specific weight? If not and provided your clothes fit, is it really that important?

BlueBlueBerries · 19/05/2023 11:38

Have to got a weight at home you can use on your current scales to see if they're off? Even a new bag of sugar/ flour?

BarbaraofSeville · 19/05/2023 11:39

Unless you weigh yourself using at least three different sets of scales at the same time, in the same place, it's hard to tell which are accurate or not.

Perhaps your memory is wrong about your precovid weight?
Have you been training so could have built up muscle, so will weigh more even if you're thinner?

But in any case, weight alone is a poor indicator of health as there are too many variables that make it vary and aren't relevant anyway.

Go by how your clothes feel and whether you feel like you have excess fat. 10 stone isn't necessarily too heavy at 5 '6 unless you have a lot of fat around your middle and/or poor muscle tone/light build. A 10 stone 5'6 person could be slim and toned, or flabby, depending on their body composition but only the latter should be concerned about it.

Emma2803 · 19/05/2023 11:43

Instead of buying new scales straight away I'd have just weighed myself as soon as I got home, if there was still a big difference then I'd have went and got new scales and compared

Why are you so upset at being 10st? You can tell in yourself and your clothes you have lost weight, what does it matter what the number is?

blipblopbloopsy · 19/05/2023 11:46

I mean this very gently OP but why does it matter? It seems kind of worrying to be so worked up over this.

SunnySaturdayMorning · 19/05/2023 11:47

YABU. It is very unlikely both their scales were wrong.

FrownedUpon · 19/05/2023 11:53

You sound completely bonkers. Why does it matter so much? Just weigh yourself now on the new scales & you’ll have a good idea. I’d trust the doctors scales over your 7 year old ones anyway.

Sparklfairy · 19/05/2023 11:54

Just weigh yourself now surely Confused

My scales say I'm 8st3 give or take. I am not, but it's a rental flat with very uneven floorboards. When I'm having a 'fat day' and feel bloated I weigh myself at home Wink

When I actually want to weigh myself I visit my DM and weigh there. I'm approx a stone 'heavier'. It's perfectly possible that there's nothing wrong with your scales and everything wrong with the surface you're weighing on. Try other rooms in your house - kitchen? - or even outside on a smooth flat surface - not grass obviously!

tiredhadenough · 19/05/2023 11:57

I'm always heavier on the scales at the drs!

Maybe it's like vanity sizes for clothing (the scales we buy are knocking half a stone off 🤣).

Maybe pre covid you were more than 10 stone 2 🤷🏼‍♀️. If things are fitting better then I wouldn't worry too much as it's just a number

MrsK89 · 19/05/2023 11:58

You could also weigh the same but have lost fat and gained muscle?

Hollyppp · 19/05/2023 12:05

I think it's worrying how obsessed you are with this. Your weight 9 (either one!) is fine, let it go and get on with life!!

SunnySaturdayMorning · 19/05/2023 12:06

Also the scales aren’t the issue here. You need to address the issues you have with your weight.

Nordicrain · 19/05/2023 12:08

It's not ARgo's fault, so it's out of order to buy a product, use it and then return it used just to prove a prove a point to your GP.

I always weigh more later in the day. That plus clothes, plus different scales could account for the difference.

Your 10 stone pre covid, was that on the doctor's scales?

Oreosareawful · 19/05/2023 12:10

Bloody hell does it matter?

bringmelaughter · 19/05/2023 12:11

Scales used in healthcare have to be calibrated at least once a year, and often more frequently. It is therefore more likely your home scales are wrong.

You sound more concerned than would be expected about this. Could there be a reason?

abmac95 · 19/05/2023 12:11

Whats the big deal even IF you are 10stone? You aren't exaxtly an elephant.

CountZacular · 19/05/2023 12:14

I’d guess it’s your floor. I weigh between 7-8 lbs difference at different spots in my living room. I’ve given up now.

10st is fine for your height and if you feel comfortable in yourself does it matter what the number says?

Oysterbabe · 19/05/2023 12:19

Clothes, breakfast, a drink and a full bladder could easily add half a stone.

ChairFloorWall · 19/05/2023 12:36

Body measurements are more accurate

Monkeynuts57 · 19/05/2023 12:39

It could be accurate I weigh 4lbs more after breakfast and and another two after dressing so about 6lbs more than first thing!! So not necessarily any wrong ones!

Luredbyapomegranate · 19/05/2023 12:54

It doesn't matter does it?

OnlyFannys · 19/05/2023 13:00

Your clothes and what you have consumes through the day can easily add a good few pounds so the calibration on your scales would only need to be off be 1 or 2 lbs to make a difference. It doesnt actually matter either way because your BMI is right in the middle of healthy. Your scales might be off from the doctors but are still showing you have lost weight since before you have covid even if they dont match the scales from the doctors, I cant understand why its such a big deal
