Pathological aversion to white trousers. Am I wrong?

Maybe this is more of a Style and Beauty question, but it runs so deep with me, it's almost irrational.

I have long hated the idea of wearing white trousers! I have no problem with them for cricketers, or white jodphurs for riders, but the whole white summer trouser thing makes me quite nauseous.

Perhaps it goes back to worry as a kid that a period might leak and show an embarassing mark? I think they used to advertise sanitary products using women in white trousers, so maybe that's it?

Is it just me who shudders at the thought of white trousers? Am I unreasonable?

I'm thoroughly with you OP.

Weirdly I find they look amazing on other women, I love the look of them, but I could never bring myself to even try on white trousers never mind wear them out.......I mean I don't even wear white tops!!!

Stratocumulus · 18/05/2023 14:51

No you’re not being unreasonable.
We all have likes and dislikes and that’s OK.
I hate Cockroaches but that doesn’t make me unreasonable.
So long as you are never rude to a white trouser wearing person it’s ok to feel the way you do.

I’m not keen on elderly men in cardigans …. 🙄

dayswithaY · 18/05/2023 14:54

They remind me of Elizabeth Hurley in the 1990s.

Whitebeamtreelover · 18/05/2023 14:54

I don’t like culottes or cold shoulder tops. I am fairly sure we are allowed personal taste and choice…and no one will force us into something we dislike.

Laiste · 18/05/2023 14:55

I love them on other people - for years i've had various pairs of white skinny jeans/cropped trousers which have just sat in the drawer.

Firstly because i worry about getting some 'orrible stain on them 2 mins after leaving the house and secondly because it's never quite the right weather for them for me.

You look at them in winter and say ooh when spring comes i'll wear them! But then we get winter, winter, winter ..... HOT! The sun comes out and no one wants jeans on 😂

ShirleyPhallus · 18/05/2023 14:55

I love them. I think they look really chic in a very Liz Hurley, 2007 way, worn by 50something slim women with loads of tanned skin and a straw bag

GeraltsBathtub · 18/05/2023 14:56

I’d never wear white trousers, I’d definitely sit in something and get them mucky! I’m not completely opposed to the concept of white trousers though, althouhj I do think white skinny jeans and white wide-legged linen trousers look dated.

Hankunamatata · 18/05/2023 14:57

They look lovely on other people but no I couldn't wear white trousers, shorts or skirts. Tbh don't even like white tops

Siameasy · 18/05/2023 14:57

I’m the same. My teenage nieces have no such aversion. I’m also under the impression that white is fattening

countrygirl99 · 18/05/2023 14:58

I can never understand how people ca wear them for more than 5 minutes without getting them grubby at the knees or hem. It's a skill I definitely don't have.

dayswithaY · 18/05/2023 14:54

They remind me of Elizabeth Hurley in the 1990s.

Yes Liz forever ruined them for me.

Hazelnuttella · 18/05/2023 15:00

I think a white slim fit / skinny jean can look great on Kate Middleton skinny types…

I would definitely spill chocolate ice cream on them though. Plus the period fear.

Laiste · 18/05/2023 15:06

I have a white cotton skirt (just above knee) which i wear in summer. I always do a double check before i sit down on ANYTHING. Including the car seat. DD likes to leave the occasional mc donalds french fry or smartie laying in wait 🙄😂

squidgybits · 18/05/2023 15:21

I have white linen trousers and have never got far from home without them getting marked in some way, they cause me too much anxiety
Lovely leaving the house all bright and clean only to return with them looking like a well used bar rag

mathanxiety · 18/05/2023 15:25

I'm in my late 50s and recently bought my first pair. I was pleasantly surprised at how I looked in them, having steered clear for years for reasons I couldn't quite put my finger on. Too 'California'? Too 'Benidorm'? They were perfect for the occasion on which I wore them - an early morning university graduation followed by brunch. There's a time and a place for everything.

Anyotherdude · 18/05/2023 15:34

I love mine! They are my summer staple paired with floaty tops and I have 5 pairs of them, in various lengths. I also love a white short - I’ve never had any problems with keeping them clean either - but that’s because I’m in the house, car, office, car, then the house again most days…

Mutabiliss · 18/05/2023 15:36

I'm with you OP, I hate them! I don't really like white clothes at all, I don't think it's a flattering colour for many people and it's so high maintenance.

Plus they are terribly Liz Hurley in the 90s darling.

Booklover40 · 18/05/2023 15:37

I love a white jean! I’m a size 10-12 so not skinny but I think I look great in them and have had compliments- but I don’t care what anyone thinks anyway. I still wear skinny/slim fit ones too even though they’re apparently unfashionable now!

Lcb123 · 18/05/2023 15:37

They look great on some people, but I’d be too nervous to wear them!

cocksstrideintheevening · 18/05/2023 15:38

They can look great. If i wear them I paranoid the whole time about a sudden random period. Irrational I know.

CharlotteRumpling · 18/05/2023 15:38

I am with you. Don't like then on men or women

postwarbulge · 18/05/2023 15:39

AS a student, I had a pair of white flares. I thought they looked good on me but they soon became grubby looking, altogether they were too much trouble

ShakeYourFeathers · 18/05/2023 15:42

I'm with you

I'm always slightly scared that a stain will be created on them as soon as I put them on. Also I reckon it's a a sure fire way to ensure your period arrives when you're least expecting it to

Also I might be wrong on this but unless you get really really good quality expensive ones they can look really cheap. Like seeing underwear or pocket seams or something

Also with underwear I'm so disorganised that when I want to wear them the only pants I will have are very bright or black ones

junebirthdaygirl · 18/05/2023 15:44

I bought my first pair at 15 and a new pair every year since. All styles through the years. Now in my 60s l have decided l have worn my final pair. I absolutely loved them all those years and never had a mishap but suddenly l just don't feel right any more. It's all dresses for me now.

Bluevelvetsofa · 18/05/2023 15:48

I think there are some clothes that attract stains no matter how careful you are. White jeans or trousers would definitely be in that category for me. I’ve got a light coloured cashmere mix jumper that gets a mark on it the minute I put it on.
