to expect friends to pronounce my DS name correctly?

This is starting to really piss brass me off. Despite me making it clear how DS name should be pronounced I still have 2 friends who continue to mispronounce it. I wouldn´t mind but its not that difficult

Neither of them I see that often but even so I think its rude and disrespectful and it really annoys me.

AIBU?

my dad still pronounces my dt1's name wrong. dt1 is nearly 3. He is slowly getting there, after me correcting him god knows how many times and saying things like 'well, he would answer you if you called him by his NAME'. I think some people jsut struggle with anything different. It is very annoying - I would keep on at it though, they might get it evenutally!

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 19/02/2008 11:29

What is your ds's name?

It does annoy me when people mispronounce names, but sometimes if I can't get the hang of pronouncing a word straight away, I'm screwed and keep mispronouncing it - even though I know it's not right. iyswim.

it annoys me when people miss spell my dd's name lol even when i sent out party invites witch said hollie she still got cards to holly dont no why it bothers me so much lol.
so if was in your position i dread to think what i would be like lol x

Twiglett · 19/02/2008 11:39

if the name is counter-intuitive you can't blame them

you know like Leah pronounced Lay-ah

Flum · 19/02/2008 11:41

Everyone spells my name wrong. I really don't mind at all. Everyone spells DD1s name with an extra letter. I know they only do it because they are ignorant and uneducated. Poor souls, I pity them.

Twiglett · 19/02/2008 11:41

love you Flum

GooseyLoosey · 19/02/2008 11:43

My father refuses to pronounce dd's name correctly. I wouldn't mind, but she is named after his mother!

Flum · 19/02/2008 11:45

Holly as I name I have heard of, Hollie only once. I would probably spell it Holly, like the plant.

VanillaPumpkin · 19/02/2008 11:48

I have a great friend with an Aus husband. He pronounces their ds1's name differently to everyone, including his wife . He puts the stress in a completely different place .

VictorianSqualor · 19/02/2008 11:48

My name always gets mispelt/pronounced, I don't think it's that hard to read 'Lorayn' as 'Lorraine' but I always get weird variations of it.
The spelling doesn't bother me because it's not usual so it's not their fault.
Though even people I've known for years seem convinced it has an 'E' on the end!

Maveta · 19/02/2008 11:48

My name has an ie at the end instead of y but even so it's a common name and the spelling is becoming more common all the time.

I still have family and friends who misspell my name, I think it is incredibly rude but gave up correcting them years ago.

CarGirl · 19/02/2008 11:51

TBH I have I think 5 friends called clare/claire and I no longer have the brain cells to remember who is spelt which way.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 19/02/2008 11:53

Oh VS, I have never seen that spelling before. TBH if I didn't know any better I would pronounce it Lorian (lorry-an)

magso · 19/02/2008 12:23

I have trouble remembering some names and how to say them- even one good friends name! I really do my best recalling visual images of the words the name has to rhyme with. I struggle to spell, have trouble learning new languages, but am not ignorant or deliberatly rude! Sometimes I am so self conscious of it I cannot say the name at all which feels very impolite to me! I do understand it must be annoying to have your childs name mispronounced, but there are more important things! Some people just have dodgy memories!

MrsMattie · 19/02/2008 12:26

Very few people can pronounce my name. It doesn't bother me any more, although I do always make a point of correcting people if they get it wrong more than once.

LostPuppy · 19/02/2008 12:28

I'm dying to know what bebespain's DS is called.

People always mispronounce my surname, because it could be bow (as in arrow) or bough (as in tree), but I just let it pass as I dont really care.

But if people got my firstname wrong I'd be astonished as it has two letters.

If i was called Lebrone or Teeamii or any other chav name that was easy to get wrong I'd just put people right and curse my parents

Niecie · 19/02/2008 12:34

It does get to you in the end, especially if you have taken the trouble to tell them how it should be said.

I have something similar as people repeatedly change the last syllable of my surname from 'ton' to 'ham' even after I spell it out for them.

I think it is lazy of them tbh.

bebespain · 19/02/2008 14:40

My DS is called Félix (note the accent )

Obviously to English people his name would be pronounced Fee - lix

However we live in Spain and DH is Spanish so we decided to go with the Spanish
pronunciation which is Fell - ix

I am not being precious about this but being that DH and DH family pronounce it like this I did not want a situation whereby me and DH both pronounce our son´s name differently iyswim. My UK family have accepted this and don´t have a problem with it.

Yes I understand this may seem strange to English people but surely when I explain then they should be able to follow suit - or is it me...??

Why didn´t I just call him Fred... !!

bebespain · 19/02/2008 14:42

Oh and the culprits in question still mispronounce it when everyone else around is saying it correctly - arrrgghh!

Blu · 19/02/2008 14:44

I think you are being a litle hard on your friends, tbh.

purplemonkeydishwasher · 19/02/2008 14:46

i feel for you and your DS. my name is looks like an english name but pronounced in french. barely anyone calls me by the right name as a result. my family and DH are the only ones really. does drive me nuts.
i wish i had a normal name sometimes!

VictorianSqualor · 19/02/2008 14:47

It's a cultural thing, can't really blame them, fee-lix will trip off their tongue whereas fell-ix wouldn't.

OrmIrian · 19/02/2008 14:50

I've had 43 years to get used to it. I get mispronounced and mispelled. Annoying? No. I shorten it now all the time and it's easier for everyone.

YouKnowNothingOfTheCrunch · 19/02/2008 14:51

I've got a Welsh name and nobody in England can pronounce it properly. I have to say I couldn't care less

There are so many variations on it from family and friends that it just makes me laugh. I really wouldn't worry.

But if it bothers you that much, just sit them down and say, "You both seem to have completely misunderstood ds's name (insert laugh here), it's not Feel-ix at all, it's a completely different name! I've only just realised, all my fault! It's Fell-ix! Feel-ix means something really rude in Spanish!"
