This is starting to really piss brass me off. Despite me making it clear how DS name should be pronounced I still have 2 friends who continue to mispronounce it. I wouldn´t mind but its not that difficult

Neither of them I see that often but even so I think its rude and disrespectful and it really annoys me.

How is Thea pronounced?

And to pronounce Kya, do you actually call her "Kire"? Or how does it rhyme with fire etc...?

Hulababy · 19/02/2008 20:38

I taught a Thea and it was pronounced how it looks - Th-ee-a

I'm afraid my grand-dad mispronounced my name until the day he died... My name is Karen, but he ALWAYS pronounced it Care-On, as that's more an Irish way of saying it.

Conversely, my sister has a very Irish name and people in England constantly mispronounce it. I have several cousins who also get this... One called Niall (Nile) who always gets called Neil, and Fiachra which get misprounced V-agra

I don't think there is any harm meant, people are just used to it!

queenofthenewyear · 19/02/2008 20:52

Grr. People are so ignorant - as a bearer of an unusually-spelt name, I have spent my life spelling out my first and surnames and I think it's cr*p when people reply to e-mails etc with the wrong spelling of my name. And my name isn't exactly rare - just not bog-standard. It's not difficult to copy from my original e-mail, let's face it. I think it's just not significant to them - only people like me make a point of getting other people's names right cos we know what it's like. Colleague at work (German) called Sabine (Za-bee-na) gets called Sa-been all the time - really annoys me. Grr. Rant over.

WallOfSilence · 19/02/2008 20:56

Ah Thea is beautiful pronounced that way!

I know a Roisin who gets called Rosheen all the time,

And a Lisa who is called either Liza or Leeza. It's hardly rocket science!

Hulababy · 19/02/2008 21:12

How do you pronounce Roisin?

Flibbertyjibbet · 19/02/2008 21:17

Er, my friend called Roisin is a Rosheen. Would be interesting to hear how your Roisin thinks it should be pronounced WOS?

HairyToe · 19/02/2008 21:23

My daughter is called Lizzy(Elizabeth) and you'd be amazed how many people have insisted on calling her Izzy...

stleger · 19/02/2008 21:31

In Cork it is ROSH -een, in Belfast ROW -sheeen, as in row your boat. I wish I was Thea, it is a great name.

Starbear · 19/02/2008 21:37

I'm from a mixed family with off-shoots all over the world. Both my parents pronounced my name completely differently as it's a name common in both countries but... wait for it... one in Urdu the other in Spanish. When I was little I heard the name pronounced in BBC English and decided that's how my brother, sisters and everyone in the UK would pronounce it but with a London accent. I now answer to any variation of the three. But I know that other people from Asian in the UK spell and pronounce the name in a variety of ways. I just remind people and if anyone is particularly stuck I let it go. Life's to short and I can't spell to save my life so people have to put up with me as well!

michymama · 19/02/2008 21:40

my ds is louis, pronunced louie and it really pees me off when people call him lewis, especially when i say louis then spell it for them. We live in italy and louis means he (lui) so he gets called luis. I don't mind in italy as its a pronounciation problem but bugs me in uk.
BTW I can't say aurora too !

FourPlusOne · 19/02/2008 21:44

My DCs have Welsh names that are not long or difficult to pronounce for non Welsh speakers, but some of my best friends still spell their names incorrectly. I find that more annoying as they have seen the correct spellings loads of times on Christmas cards etc and still do it. Don't get so bothered by the names being slightly anglicised in pronounciation as that can't always be helped, but I do get annoyed about the spelling thing!

WallOfSilence · 19/02/2008 21:45

Roisin in pronounced here (Not too far from Belfast) Roy-sheen.

WallOfSilence · 19/02/2008 21:47

Intrigued now as to what starbear's name is

Starbear · 19/02/2008 22:06

Quiz It was a name in the news in the 1960's

spicemonster · 19/02/2008 22:13

My sister is married to a French man and she uses his surname. I had to call her at work the other day and realised I had no idea how she pronounces it in England. So I had a stab and got it totally wrong.

She's only been married for 20 years

kayzisbroody · 19/02/2008 22:16

I have a friend who is Russian he she pronounces ds's name as "Freedie" instead of Freddie. She tries so hard though to say Freddie.

seeker · 19/02/2008 22:23

Another good argument for calling children John, Mary, Jane, Peter, George and Kate!

Psychomum5 · 19/02/2008 23:11

I feel for you.....

my son is called jacob......about 4 people I know tho insist on calling him jacum???.....however much I correct them. they all seem to claim that they cannot pronounce the B, and to say it with an UM sound is easier! HOW?

or is it m? considering 4 people have the same problem.

then there is my aunt who insists on him being JAKE, even tho HE as well as I correct her.

and then there is my name......

alethea....

I get Althea, Anthea, Alicia, Athelia, Amilia, Aleesha, Alathiea.......any and all!

add it to my maiden name of McMahon, and you cannot even imagine what I went thro as a child.........especially as all the above names started from teachers at school......you would think they would know better really.

the amount of times I was called in assembly for awards etc, and the teacher/head would start of trying, and then end up saying A,A,A...Alth......Alth M.....M.....Mack.....

erm......

and I would stand up and say......

yep, thats me sir

(hence me thinking that basic 'normal' names would be the order of the day with mine, and now I get people not being able to say one of their names.....)

hunkermunker · 19/02/2008 23:11

LOL Hatrick - no, but I could've pronounced her name wrong. Maybe I should've done! Her DS's name was Max-not-short-for-anything, apparently.

Spidermama · 19/02/2008 23:16

Nope. That would annoy me too. It's not hard and it shows a lack of respect for the cultural aspect.

Tell them straight. Make them say it. Be polite and smile a lot, but sort it none the less otherwise you'll be grinding your teeth and feeling hatred toward them every time it comes up.

hunkermunker · 19/02/2008 23:19

I used to work with a bitchfromhell woman who pronounced Yvonne EEEEEEEvon.

UnquietDad · 19/02/2008 23:23

I used to know an Andrea, and I called her An-dray-ah for years before realising that she had always called herself Anj-reeah.

MIL calls a woman she used to work with, whose name is Irene, Eye-reen. Surely this is wrong? It's not like Eileen with an r. It's Eye-ree-nee. My grandma was called that, or Rene (ree-nee) for short.
