Dog walker killed by her own XL Bully Breed dog.

NOT a pack of 8 dogs as was reported repeatedly with concurrent complete slating of all professional dog walkers.

Absolutely awful. So many of us who have worked with dogs knew this would be the outcome and that packs of 8 dogs do not behave in this way.

After investigations are complete we are now told that the only dog destroyed was the walkers own XL Bully Breed dog. Over and over again it is these dogs and still today I see a man strutting around my locale with two of these type dogs, both unneutered and off lead 🤷🏼‍♀️

Well no.

8 dogs were involved.

2 have been returned.
1 has been euthanised (the dead woman’s XL Bully)
5 remain in kennels awaiting discussions with their owners re ‘recommendations’ from the forensic report.

The XL may be the first of the group to be euthanised, rather than the ‘only’.

Plus investigations haven’t been concluded yet, an inquest will happen at a later date. I’m not a bully defender but the news report does not reflect the OP at all.

I agree. Just because that was the dog that inflicted the death bite doesn't mean the others weren't involved. I'm fairly sure they will have done DNA checks and found the dashounds not involved hence their release.

I just searched American XL Bully in Google Images because I want to know what they look like for when I'm next in the park. One of the first images that comes up shows a very aggressive looking dog straining very hard on the leash. I clicked on the photo - it turns out it's an advert for American Bully puppies for sale. I don't understand why these aggressive dogs are allowed to be bred, sold and advertised in such a way!

I thought "XL bully" were extra large versions of bulldogs.
The Leonberger looks like a Newfoundland, not a bulldog. Much less XL bulldog.
#Confused

The Leonburger is not an XL Bully.

Type XL Bully into Google for images or look at the article attached earlier in this thread about the little girl killed by one.

The Leonburger was one of the eight dogs being walked along with the XL Bully and two daschunds no details of the other breeds that made up the eight.

Gumtree is full of them.
Loads that say something like
Having to rehome due to change of circumstances. Good with children, but not other dogs.

You need your head examined if you'd bring a Gumtree (or any) bully into your family home.

Smallyellowbird · 17/05/2023 21:16

Like many PPs I just don't understand why someone would want to own a dog like this, if it wasn't to intimidate others. There are so many other breeds, why choose a bully ot pitbull type dog?

KittyAlfred · 17/05/2023 21:16

I wonder why they turned on her.
So awful.

Homebaby · 17/05/2023 21:16

@Beargrumps22 I absolutely agree. It's a terrible tragedy but that is way too many dogs being walked at the same time to guarantee control. Add to that they do not live together and it's a terrible mix and an accident waiting to happen. Unfortunately I think dog walking has become an easy way to make money without the breed and behaviour knowledge required to make informed choices.
In no way am I detracting from the fact that a woman has lost her life, I just feel like situations like this could be avoided it the industry was better regulated.

And if those breeds are found to be capable of killing a human being then that breed should also be banned. There is a reason we have exotic pet licenses. No one with any sense would keep a tiger and insist that a cat is just as harmful.

I completely agree and I think all dogs even miniature poodles should require a license.

You can have pet big cats and other exotic dangerous animals in this country but you need to acquire a license and prove you can look after it properly and be a responsible dog owner which I think should be the same for all dogs.

I think we need tighter controls on all animals but dogs especially are bought for status reasons and not raised properly and then they’re either put in kennels or they end up attacking someone through no fault of their own.

I've never owned any. But one of her neighbours did.

Her dog actually looks very close to the one in this Wikipedia picture.
The dog was so well behaved and didn't look like so many of the big, aggressive dogs that the search engine turns up when I type American bully / bully XL. I guess it really depends on the situation and the individuals involved.

Keygraer · 17/05/2023 21:22

These dogs are pit bulls or pit bull crosses/pit bull types.

Why the actual fuck are these dogs not being seized for not being muzzled in public and the owners not charged under the Dangerous Dogs Act.

What a fucking joke. They are literally illegal. Bastard horrible things. Sooner they're all shot the better.

WhisperingAutistic · 17/05/2023 21:22

I can't get over the size of the XL bully. It's like a bear. Terrifying.

Leonbergers are NOT a bull breed. The article is badly written and confusing.

They are big, but properly trained, are very gentle.

smooththecat · 17/05/2023 21:46

As well as danger to people, there’s also danger to other pets. A tiny dog was mauled to death by an XL bully and another dog, both off leash in a park in Bristol recently. I was absolutely awful, the owners were devastated and there’s no consequences for the owner.

oakleaffy · 17/05/2023 21:47

This sounds an absolutely nightmarish attack.
Clearly four dogs were savaging her, but the ringleader seems to have been the 'XL' Bully.

These do seem to be ''idiot magnets'', Two dogs that look to be of this type were shot by police in UK recently, and the owner was already banned from owning dogs as his previous three killed people's pet dogs.

they don't attract the sensible, conscientious owners, that's for sure, but these XL Bullies have a tendency to turn on humans and other dogs.

Mirabai · 17/05/2023 21:48

The Leonberger was one of the dogs she was walking, the bully was her own.

Leonbergers are related to Bernese mountain dogs.

They were used to as draft and watch dogs.

A leonberger obviously needs to be trained (it is a large working dog with a lot of energy when They're young). But they actually are gentle giants. And have a very calm temperament.

Changethatnameagain2 · 17/05/2023 21:51

That specific individual Leonberger had known behavioural issues from being a puppy and the owners had even been on a TV behaviour programme with it because it was so bad

Mirabai · 17/05/2023 21:55

It wasn’t the one that killed her according to the report so that’s moot.

oakleaffy · 17/05/2023 21:56

ShowUs · 17/05/2023 20:49

It does not say which one she was killed by and it’s still being investigated so you cannot spread false information.

One of the dog seized was 11 stone and a powerful breed but it’s just not a bully breed. I can imagine that doing a lot of damage if it attacked.

If all of the other 6 are strong breeds too (even if not bully breeds) then they could all be responsible for her death because they all attacked her.

The fact that her pet was bully breed is irrelevant in this situation as they all attacked her and if 8 dogs attack you then you are going to be seriously injured or killed.

There needs to be a limit of how many dogs can be walked at one time.

I'm 1.72 metres tall and 9st 10 and was knocked flying by a Whippet that was galloping around the park {Not my dog}
If a lightweight Whippet {He is finely built} can put an adult human on the ground, what hope for chunky, heavy dogs with huge jaws on them?

I was shocked to be felled by a Whippet, {He was just young and clumsy} and it shows how strong even 'Light' dogs can be.

WisherWood · 17/05/2023 21:57

It’s bonkers. It very much is to do with the breed. Kicking a cane corso / bully cross was like kicking a tree stump. Utterly solid. If I kicked one of my dogs it would stop immediately and yelp in pain. A cane corso has a bite strength that exceeds a pitbull or a lion.

Yes. I've had to split up fights between very large dogs of similar breeding to this and it is terrifying the strength they possess. And actually beating them doesn't work, because the pain just makes them fight more. The only thing that really works is strangling or choking them and that does put you at significant risk. The only reason I got involved is because I and the owner were the only adults present but there were children around and I didn't want them trying to split the dogs up and getting hurt themselves.

I have no idea why anyone has a dog they can't easily physically overpower themselves. Any breed can kick off given certain circumstances but at least if they're smaller than you, you can overwhelm them. These dogs were bigger than me and a lot stronger. It was only because they had choke chains on and we could basically choke them that we got them apart. I love dogs but I'd never have a breed like that.

slamfightbrightlight · 17/05/2023 22:04

We were walking up the road the other day behind a youngish lad walking (being dragged along by) what looked like a young GSD or possibly a Belgian Malinois. Completely unprovoked it jumped up and bit a person walking in the opposite direction. Lad just shrugged it off with barely a sorry. There are so many poor owners with poorly trained dogs, it is scary. Had it been a child walking past it would have been their face, not their arm, that got bitten. And the more powerful the dog the more grave the risk. As a dog owner (of a SBT no less) i’d be more than happy to be licensed if it kept people and dogs safe.

megletthesecond · 17/05/2023 18:59

I doubt there's anything anyone could have done unless they had a tranquilliser gun.

Or a pistol like police in Limehouse had when they shot those large dogs.
I can't see what an unarmed person could do.

That XL Bully that killed the poor 10 yr old innocent child took 8 bullets to finally kill the brute.

Pandaparty · 17/05/2023 22:08

Random bit of information, but sex also plays a big part in which dogs are more likely to bite. Male dogs are much more likely than female, especially ones who haven't been "done".

Joeylove88 · 17/05/2023 22:20

This is a terribly tragic story and it seems to be happening more often and with the same breed being mentioned. I must admit iv never been a lover of dogs but I can appreciate them and iv spent time around different breeds all my life (Alsatians, terriers, collies, labs, pugs etc) and have never been in bad situations with dogs before personally. One thing I will never be able to do though is ever trust any dog. In my eyes all breeds are capable, they all have natural instincts and they all have teeth! There's not a dog on this earth that isn't capable of losing it in a moment of madness under the right circumstances. There are of course different levels of risk and I personally find it impossible to reason in my mind that anyone would want to own any breed that would be impossible to stop if it were to attack...can someone please explain why it's worth the risk? I'm sorry to offend owners of these breeds and dog lovers but they are animals and it's feeling scarily more normalised that dogs are being defended as 'oh mine would never do this' or 'it's always down to the owner not the dog' . Majority of cases yes it's the owner but why are we normalising that dogs could NEVER have it in them. It's truly worrying how chill people are about dogs in general.

I used to be a dog walker - for a decade. I adore dogs. These breeds are problematic and I knew right from the start of the reporting this incident unfolding that there would be one involved. I don’t think they’re monsters. I don’t dislike them. But they are lethal when owned by people who are using them as status symbols, weapons, or simply don’t know how to handle them. This cannot be denied.

Look at the utter incompetents that seem to own those that DO attack.
The idiot who watched while his female dog tore at a police horse for over a minute while he lamely looked on.

The Police horse's injuries were really nasty..and horses have tougher skin than humans.

I hope the dog that attacked the horse is euthanised, it is clearly unstable and has a weak owner..It was a stranger who grabbed it, not it's owner which says a lot.

These dogs need banning, they seem very aggressive and unstable.
Another man had his throat attacked by one he was walking. He too was killed.
