Mistake by Tesco - do I tell them

Kedece2410 · 16/05/2023 21:38

So the other day Tesco notified me the van with my order had broken down & my order would probably need rescheduled

2 hours later - it arrived. Replacement driver, very apologetic. All good.

Next morning I receive an email telling me due to an unexpected error my order has been cancelled & they're very sorry & have issued a refund

Today, the full amount has been refunded - £120

My sister is horrified I'm not phoning them to let them know. Everyone else says I'd be mad to

Thoughts??

YABU - Course you should let them know
YANBU - The profits Tesco make, they can afford £120

I certainly wouldn't tell them. I would have strategically failed to spot the email.
They make their £££££ by bullying farmers into supplying produce too cheaply, manipulating customers into junk-eating their way towards the national diabetes epidemic and flogging planet-killing fast fashion. Get your own back a microscopic bit when you get the chance.

What’s sadder is that 1/3 of the respondents are virtue signallers.

Virtue signalling is a much bigger curse on society than someone not wanting to waste time on a call to a call centre trying to donate money to Tescos.

Let them contact you OP to correct their own mistake.

And no it isn’t ‘technically theft’ 😂😂. If Tesco contacted the police they would be told that it was a civil matter.

It literally is theft. Theft act 1968. It’s been cited more than once.

It is also not a donation to Tesco. A donation is when you give something for nothing. It’s not paying for goods you have.

dwightschrutebeets · 17/05/2023 08:05

YANBU- I'd keep quiet!

sqirrelfriends · 17/05/2023 08:07

Tesco I probably would leave it as I’ve had issues in the past that haven’t been rectified.

A small business I’d let them know.

LumpySpaceGoddess · 17/05/2023 08:07

I wouldn’t lose sleep over it 🤷🏻‍♀️

Again you’re wrong.

As for the rest of the comment literally what are you talking about? It’s a thread about somebody wanting to fleece Tesco.

Gigglemous · 17/05/2023 08:18

I dont know what the actual term for it is, but large companies have a couple million 'write offs'.
A company I worked for had 1 million per year they could write off via customer complaints, errors etc. Literally that money is there to be exploited like that. Someone complained about an item they bought that was 11k that wasn't working properly, had a free exchange even after signs of use on it, then after the second time they replaced, they just refunded the client.
So in the grand scheme of things, they won't miss out.

WanderlyWagonInWales · 17/05/2023 08:27

If you don’t notify them, then you’ve essentially stolen £120 worth of goods. Regardless of Tesco profits, regardless of anything else - is this the example you want to set for your children? The fact that 61% of people think your actions are ok HORRIFIES me. This is NOT okay. Call them, tell them and do the honest, decent (RIGHT!) thing OP.

Ionlydrinkondaysendinginy · 17/05/2023 08:27

£120 is absolutely nothing to a company like tesco. Keep it and Enjoy. However if you do feel guilty give some to a charity and enjoy the rest

YouveGotAFastCar · 17/05/2023 08:30

It’ll likely reconcile. They’ve got six years to fix it.

These threads always seem to go the same way - a roughly even split between those who feel that large retailers are bandits who deserve a lttle loss here and there when they make mistake in the customer's favour, and those who respect the moral absolute of not taking what isn't yours. It always feels like there isn't really any meeting place between these two camps.

I am not sure I agree about no meeting place for these two extremes. I would let them know if it was easy and quick. I would like to return the money but I don't want extra life admin visited upon me because of their mistake. These days it's so hard to just talk to someone as opposed to an automated call filtered. I don't have Twitter and no plans to get it so that's not an option.

Namechangenoidea · 17/05/2023 08:38

Keep it. Why should their mistake inconvenience you? You have to ring up go through all the details etc.

Nolongera · 17/05/2023 08:39

It is an offence, as mentioned. It's unlikely they will forget either, it will probably be flagged up in a few days.

Obtaining a pecuniary advantage I think the offence was called. Mind, it was a long time ago.

I would still be tempted to keep it, I can resist anything except temptation.

Riapia · 17/05/2023 08:41

Tell them you have ordered the items from another SM and you no longer need the shopping, they can collect them ASAP.

MitchellMummy · 17/05/2023 08:43

That happened to me once. Not Tesco, another food delivery though. Emailed to tell them and they said they didn't want the money back.

RoamingToaster · 17/05/2023 08:44

The amount of bad fruit and veg I've had from Tesco or items that have one day to go until expiring, I probably wouldn't bother telling them. I guess it's technically wrong but I don't feel loyal at all to them.

Butchyrestingface · 17/05/2023 08:46

nicericey · 16/05/2023 21:57

If you tweet them they'll let you keep it anyway. You are but a tiny drop in a massive ocean to them.

I like this idea.

Trickofthetrade · 17/05/2023 08:46

If all of you who are saying keep it are teaching your kids, same what hope is there for the future ? Really depressing and worrying .

CabbagePatchDole · 17/05/2023 08:48

It's not your money! Your sister is right. I can't believe everyone is telling you to keep it. Even if I had nothing in the bank and was tempted I would still give it back. I would call them, they might have deliberately refunded you for the inconvenience.

People are genuinely selfish now and as long as they get what they want/feel entitled to aren't arsed about others or setting a good example for their children. People excuse dishonestly and lying in many ways and tie themselves in knots trying to justify it when it's really quite simple.

Malarandras · 17/05/2023 08:49

Obviously it is wrong to keep it. There’s no grey area here. I’ve never kept something that doesn’t belong to me. Don’t care if that makes me a ‘virtue signaller’ in some people’s eyes. I have high standards, which I teach my kids.

Also did it occur to you that this could get the driver into trouble?

CabbagePatchDole · 17/05/2023 08:52

MontyPyth0n · 16/05/2023 22:23

Threads like this reminds me that mumsnet is batshit at times.

It seems that committing benefit fraud is ok, as big corporates pay hardly any tax, but if a big corporate mistakenly gives you a few pounds worth of shopping, you should be getting life in prison.

I can't see that. Most people are telling her to keep the money!

I agree. It's depressing. And it makes me feel oh so very old, as though I come from another world.

CabbagePatchDole · 17/05/2023 08:56

You're a thief, OP.
