Do people not make the effort with appearance anymore

The last couple of months, I've noticed in restaurants, bars and social places that majority of women/young adults have replaced heels for trainers and dresses for jeans and dress pretty much causal when out socialising in bars or eating out. Is this the new norm? Why don't people make an effort anymore? Especially the younger generation. AIBU or is this a minority?

How do British women NOT dress for the male gaze? If I venture out on a Saturday evening I see very little left to the imagination. It's all hanging out!! Fine, I'm not judging. They can wear what they want. But European women definitely dress more modestly. I say this as someone who's in law's live in Europe and I spend months in mainland Europe each year.

Dressing modestly isn't "better" it's just a different choice. Why do women need to be modest?

HazelBite · 27/05/2023 10:12

I get told "you are all dressed up" when I go out walking the dog wearing a dress! I just find dresses more comfortable than jeans that are tight round my waist and much cheaper than having to buy separates. My "dresses" are not sequin covered or overtly dressy, just merely budget buys in sales, easy care, and look great with my comfy boots, but I still get the comments.
I think whatever you wear someone will judge/comment.

That's what I was saying. The poster you quoted seems to have construed that 'classy' means dressing for the male gaze when it's the opposite. I was saying my European mates tend to look good without letting it all hang out.

Go to any big city in, the UK and you'll encounter booze Britain scenes with overweight women crammed into tiny unflattering dresses, everything wobbling as they teeter out the kebab shop in their heels. 😂

Hey, know what isn't classy? Sizeism. Especially when it comes with a side order of class snobbery.

Nutellaonall · 27/05/2023 19:01

Movin groovinbarbie. You are talking about one set of mates i am saying as a whole briitish women dress for themselves and for gun. I didn't want to spell it out to you but a lot of eastern european women dress like hookers. Loke my dads new much younger wife. They are thinner because its expected of them.

I'm not convinced some of the women here look any less like hookers. Chav style is a real british thing.

I dunno. People on here get outraged if expected to pretend that a bloke is a woman, yet the same people expect you to always pretend that obese people are slim. I'm not going to agree that fat people look good crammed into tight revealing clothes. They really don't.

It's not even flattering on the average figure. You've got to be pretty slim to pull it off. But I didn't say anything about class. You made that connection.

Callyem · 27/05/2023 20:59

How about we let people wear whatever the fuck they want and feel comfortable in.

MovinGroovinBarbie · 27/05/2023 21:06

That's what I said at the start. I still believe European women tend to be better turned out though and some posters seem a bit triggered by that.

CheeseAndOlives · 27/05/2023 22:19

SunnySaturdayMorning · 15/05/2023 11:24

It is a shame. When you see how smartly people dressed before the 60s, and now you see men wearing skinny jeans it just shows you how far society has fallen.

Totally agree with previous posters that women should wear whatever they like.

But NO MEN SHOULD WEAR SKINNY JEANS!

Does it matter though? If they feel confident in what they're wearing who cares. There's no law that says only slim people are allowed to wear bodycon. I'm a fat woman and I personally wouldn't wear tight dresses because I feel uncomfortable in them, but fair play to those who do. I don't think anybody is asking you to pretend we're slim, just don't take the piss out of our size.

Anyotherdude · 28/05/2023 08:34

@CheeseAndOlives men should also wear what they want! Skinny jeans even look cool on some slightly more portly men, as well as great on the slim ones!

'Booze Britain'? 'Kebab shop'? It didn't sound like you were talking about the leafy shires, put it that way.

Kanaloa · 28/05/2023 18:33

@bringincrazyback

She also used the phrase ‘chav style.’ To me, ‘chav’ is a really snobby classist slur clearly aimed at the working classes. So I don’t think anyone’s jumped to some crazy conclusion, that poster was clearly looking to have a snotty little kick down.

MovinGroovinBarbie · 29/05/2023 01:53

Oh come on. Let's not pretend chavs don't exist.

VerbenaGirl · 19/06/2023 18:19

I think it's brilliant. I'm so miserable if I'm not in comfy shoes or if I'm too trussed up. I've still made an effort!

MovinGroovinBarbie · 29/05/2023 01:53

Really? We’re still using an acronym that stands for “council housed and violent”?

You seem to be full of your own self importance. I’m sure you always look wonderful when you go out, perhaps hoping to mask your blatant nastiness.

CoffeeCantata · 19/06/2023 18:50

@Avondale89

2 points:

That derivation of 'chav' has long been discredited. It's basically a made-up urban myth. The origin of the word is unknown but is more likely to be related to the Romany word 'chavi' meaning child.

Also, I don't think chav means working class - quite the opposite. Chav usually refers to flashy, vulgar, loud people - often from what used to be called the 'underclass' - a different group altogether.

However we might disapprove, there wouldn't be a word if there wasn't a concept to start with!

Kanaloa · 19/06/2023 20:53

MovinGroovinBarbie · 29/05/2023 01:53

Oh come on. Let's not pretend chavs don't exist.

Relevance? Because poor people exist then calling them slurs and looking down on them is ok?

IchWill · 19/06/2023 22:24

I think it's a reasonable observation.

I'm guilty of what you've seen. I used to always get dressed up and have heels on, even for a simple pub lunch.

I own a lot of heels, I wore them every day before lockdown. Since WFH / lockdowns I had no need to wear heels and I've become "out of practice", seriously. It took me years to build up being able to glide in killer heels! Now I pick comfort over the heels and I'm devastated! 😂 Maybe age (46) us is partly to blame.

But in answer to your question, I would always previously prefer to be overdressed than underdressed, but like you, I have seen pubs and bars definitely populated by a more casual crowd, which means I lean that way too.

Meadowland · 19/06/2023 22:33

@MovinGroovinBarbie I totally agree. I spend a lot of time in Europe. The women there dress very elegantly and very few are overweight.

Nice how you conflated elegance with not being overweight there. The two aren't mutually exclusive.

Well, I'd say there's a relationship. You'd be more likely to call a gazelle elegant than a hippo.

You are demonstrably wrong on this - latest WHO stats show that the majority of adults in Europe are overweight.
