Do people not make the effort with appearance anymore

The last couple of months, I've noticed in restaurants, bars and social places that majority of women/young adults have replaced heels for trainers and dresses for jeans and dress pretty much causal when out socialising in bars or eating out. Is this the new norm? Why don't people make an effort anymore? Especially the younger generation. AIBU or is this a minority?

Hello all, I'm rather shocked at how huge this post got, to say the least. For those who would like to know, I'm 28 and by heels, I don't mean 6 inchers, I'm talking about a broad spectrum, block heels, boot heels, small heels.
Onto the subject of dresses, I don't mean Bodycon or extremely short dresses, just casual dresses or summer dresses.

Personal opinion that I think most people are far too casual nowadays, it's nice to see people make the effort. Seeing 20 year olds going out in baggy jeans, joggers and trainers to a restaurant or bar just doesn't sit right with me. Surely, it's nice to get dressed up for an occasion or meal... isn't it?

Anyway, thank you for all your lovely replies. Especially the ones saying I'm a nasty pig and probably have a rotten face. It's made my night rather interesting! Wink

Why would you want people to wear things they're uncomfortable in though? Just to impress other people?

@shadowchancesassy - I disagree that trainers with a dress is unflattering or looks like a sack. I have seen plenty of outfits like this that looked pretty and very flattering. I seriously considered wearing pink Converse with a dress to my son’s wedding, and I have a friend who wore Converse to her own wedding, and looked absolutely amazing!

LlynTegid · 26/05/2023 18:04

This is the UK. Many people don't do style, or pride in appearance.

I noticed the difference in that bastion of style, Belgium, last week. Never mind France or Italy.

midgemadgemodge · 26/05/2023 18:21

Sorry but isn't what you mean is that British people don't have a style you admire

The British people pride themselves on their ability to dress in a way that suits them and makes themselves feel good with not need for your approval

midgemadgemodge · 26/05/2023 18:22

Without not with not

13Bastards · 26/05/2023 18:28

It's 2023 mate, no one wears heels now 😂

You must look awfully dated now OP if you're still cutting about in them. Maybe it's you who needs to make the effort with your appearance actually?

Completely agree. I think dresses and trainers can look really cute.

Today I’m wearing a midi dress with pink and lilac flowers matched with lilac vans - and I definitely don’t look like a sack of spuds.

Like all outfits, it’s how you wear it that matters

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 26/05/2023 18:57

In fairness to @shadowchancesassy, I do look like a sack in whatever I wear.

Testino · 26/05/2023 19:26

Re heels: I'd say they're beginning to make more of an effort to walk normally/properly and not on tiptoes anymore. You should try that. It's liberating.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 26/05/2023 20:03

jeans and flat shoes have been my staple since Nirvana!

I’m from Belgium although not living there but when we are there visiting family, jeans and trainers or dresses and trainers are the norm. I’ll be there tomorrow and will be going out to dinner in Brussels wearing my skinny jeans and converse trainers.

Such a tragedy, no one bothers to bind the feet of young women.

What is the world coming to, allowing women to dress for comfort? Whatever next?

Cannot believe it took this long for someone to start blabbering this nonsense.

Oh yes, British people are fat ugly piles of lard who simply ooze around the high streets with their ugly clothes looking like sacks of shit, while every other country is fashionable and stylish in their ‘good fabrics’ and ‘tailored clothing.

I’ve spent time in France and Italy. Some people are stylish, others are casual. Most people are just wearing normal clothes for their daily lives. Just like us in the UK.

Kanaloa · 26/05/2023 21:51

And for what it’s worth I think it’s also a myth that high heels improve your posture. I think they force people to walk in a silly looking and unnatural way. It’s much more attractive in my opinion to see someone striding along normally in a pair of shoes that aren’t specifically designed to make it hard to walk.

Nutellaonall · 26/05/2023 21:54

Jeans and a top were what i used to go out in in my uni years. Was only in the late naughties that everyone started going out in little dresses and heels.the hsiness formal years!

I think it’s great. My DD and her friends dress this way and it suits them.

The whole “dressed up” look associated with high heels looks really dated to me now. It seems common in Eastern European countries now though, perhaps you need to travel if you want to socialise with appropriately “dressed up” women.

I notice this too. One of my best mates is Lithuanian and she and her friends dress much better than most English women. Stylish but classy. I suppose I'd say 'classic'. You'd never see her wearing her dressing gown to the shop. 😂

I'm all up for comfort myself. Nice dress and kicks can look pretty good whilst being comfy.

MovinGroovinBarbie · 26/05/2023 22:11

I also feel like European women don't tend to dress up in as sexualised a fashion. A lot of young women over here seem to have it all hanging out when they go clubbing. I'm not even talking about booty outfits you'd see in a chavvy music video, more the really tiny dresses that leave very little to the imagination.

My European mates seem to manage to look glamorous without having it all hanging out.

Nutellaonall · 27/05/2023 06:55

Lol the slagging off the British has started. British have always been slightly ahead fashion wise in terms of edginess and fun. Leave the boring “classy” dressing to the French and Italians. As for the poster agreeing eastern European dressed more classy i think she kind of missed the point. They dress for the male gaze more. Not sure classy is the word i would use though.

Brieandcamembert · 27/05/2023 07:58

I think it's a real shame. I see the state of some people especially women and i think how sad it is that there was a time that men wore hats and ladies in dresses and now I see people in tracksuit bottoms when they weren't at the gym.

I don't think you need to be preened every where you go but going to a restaurant in tracksuit and trainers or work without wearing something a bit more presentable seems a real reflection of society now.

How is slopping about in T-shirts and tracksuit bottoms, as many seem to permanently do, either edgy or fun?

How do British women NOT dress for the male gaze? If I venture out on a Saturday evening I see very little left to the imagination. It's all hanging out!! Fine, I'm not judging. They can wear what they want. But European women definitely dress more modestly. I say this as someone who's in law's live in Europe and I spend months in mainland Europe each year.

Nutellaonall · 27/05/2023 09:13

The british dress for fun and fashion more. Yes you will get a small subset of a specific age group out on a sat dressed in a certain way but overall as a nation we dress more for ourselves and for our female friends.
i am talking about eastern european women dressing for the male gaze.

BitOutOfPractice · 27/05/2023 09:42

Clearly you are judging @SallyWD, why not just own it?
