Do people not make the effort with appearance anymore

The last couple of months, I've noticed in restaurants, bars and social places that majority of women/young adults have replaced heels for trainers and dresses for jeans and dress pretty much causal when out socialising in bars or eating out. Is this the new norm? Why don't people make an effort anymore? Especially the younger generation. AIBU or is this a minority?

Cosycover · 15/05/2023 17:28

I am glad this is the norm now and my daughter won't get bunions from the early naughties heels I had to wear to be fashionable.

gogohmm · 15/05/2023 17:45

Been the same since I became an adult (early 90's! Except it was boots not trainers.

I have never worn heels regularly, they come out with my best jewellery and evening dress on occasion

Rainbowsandbutterflies1990 · 15/05/2023 20:03

It seems a lot of judgmental people, just seem very unattractive , which seems ironic!

Bookridden · 15/05/2023 20:10

I wonder where the OP is from. Getting glammed up still seems pretty normal in, say, Newcastle and Liverpool, but in a lot of cities (London in particular), it's a bit cooler and relaxed when it comes to dressing up.

TBH I do miss dressing up now and again. I'm going to a gala dinner next week and don't have anything posh to wear to it. I don't want to buy anything I won't wear again.”

I’ve always wondered, what’s a “gala” dinner?

Resilience · 15/05/2023 20:46

I'm nearly 50 and absolutely love the fact that heels are slowly being consigned to history.

I spent years working on a uniformed service wearing boots so have never been able to cope with anything more than a low kitten heel or black heel anyway.

I still like to make the effort to dress up when going out, but now I can wear flats without looking odd. Casual does not = slobby. It's just the evolution of fashion. I'm sure the same thing was said when women abandoned corsets and started wearing trousers!

SaladRooney · 15/05/2023 12:02

Yes, exactly. The horror, the horror!

Back to whalebone corsets, tight-lacing and backboards.

Whalebone corsets were actually flexible and supportive and tight lacing uncommon. Take a look at costume historian, seamstress and scoliosis sufferer Bernadette Banner's YouTube videos.
High heels are indeed awful, though.

Oaktree1233 · 15/05/2023 21:43

There are some elegant heels that don’t hurt and are easy to wear eg boots with heels I find very comfortable. Espadrilles with wedges likewise. At the moment the cocktail dress is out and boho is in but at my age you realise that things go around in circles. Moreover, completely flat shoes are not food for you ..I have Achille tendinitis from wellies.

Houseofpainjumparound · 15/05/2023 21:47

Apologies op but my medical condition prevents me from wearing heels...I wish I could I really do but thanks for making me feel like a slob because I can only wear trainers/ plimsoles due to my swollen foot and leg

Oopsiedaisyy · 15/05/2023 21:58

I'm 49,would never wear heels, such a dated look. I'm all about comfort, and yes, style.

FancyFanny · 15/05/2023 22:05

Bunions are largely hereditary. I have hardly ever worn heels and have them, as do both my parents- and my DF has certainly not got them from wearing heels.

RampantIvy · 15/05/2023 22:11

Grin I'll let you know on Sunday @MrsSkylerWhite

It's a charity fundraiser 3 course dinner, but that's all I know.

SlippySarah · 15/05/2023 22:36

The way I dress is the least important or interesting thing about me. I "make an effort" in my employment, in raising my children to be educated, well rounded people and in the help I give to my wider family. I "make an effort" for my local community and for wildlife and the environment. I "make an effort" to maintain my own positive emotional wellbeing and mental health and to provide a healthy environment for my children and others. Wearing heels and make up is not really on my radar of things that matter and if you feel disappointed or offended by the way I look then you have a problem, not me.

Equalitea · 15/05/2023 23:05

I can’t say I’ve noticed but I personally like to wear sandals for a night out, at the moment it’s Mules but only about a 2 inch heel because otherwise they’re not comfortable. My feet get hot and I like air to my toes every chance I get day or night 🙊

Divorcedalongtime · 16/05/2023 17:41

Because we understood that our worth doesn’t hinge on mens desire of us

ilovechocolate07 · 16/05/2023 18:01

Haven't worn heels in over a year. Why would I? They hurt and don't actually look good (imo). I used to put a lot if store by looking right in my twenties and early thirties but I just can't be bothered anymore. I dress in clothes I like and I don't care what others think.

Dontcallmescarface · 16/05/2023 18:06

I have deformed toes on both feet, wearing high heels is impossible for me but you carry on with your judgey nonsense or shoe fetish

Oops bold fail.

raindancer17 · 16/05/2023 18:18

The last few decades, I've noticed that the majority of women/young adults have realised that they are entitled to wear what they choose and what makes them happy/comfortable. Is this the new norm? Why don't they bow to misogynistic, outdated, superficial expectations anymore? AIBU or is this a minority?

LillyOfTheValley2020 · 16/05/2023 18:22

Hi OP. Thank you for the heads up! :( I haven't been out for a while so haven't had the chance to notice. Some girls around here still dress up (dresses and heels) - I see them passing our windows on Fridays and Saturdays. Some even look classy 😄.
As for me, I love heels, I didn't realise they were considered "dated", and I wear them to work all the time and always get compliments. I shall wear then to go out too (if I ever manage again). Who cares about other people really?
But I guess your point is, why don't everyone do it anymore ... pfff... I would blame COVID and general working from home etc. 🤷‍♀️

I am old and YABVU

Jayne35 · 16/05/2023 18:38

Pretty much gave up on heels in the 90s when I was pregnant. Wear them very occasionally but only a low heel as I have such wide feet I struggle to find anything that fits anyway. I wear boots a lot and sandals with a wedge as flats hurt more than heels. Also I have gone out to pubs and bars wearing converse trainers and I’m 48. I don’t feel I have let myself go at all, just want to be comfortable.

Bensondog · 16/05/2023 18:38

Jesus Christ ok people she was only expressing an opinion no need to get nasty

llamallama6384 · 16/05/2023 18:41

It's more to do with fashion that effort I think.

Baggy clothes/mom jeans/cargo pants/trainers are in fashion, therefor you see it more.

Skinny jeans/ body con dresses and 6" heels are outdated so most people don't wear them.

LaughingCat · 16/05/2023 18:42

40 and worn t-shirts and jeans out since I was 18.

YABU.
