In the cost of living crisis, things have increased in price, while value, quality and quantity has diminished...

So what do you think is worth buying, worth the investment in thew tough times items can be cheap or expensive, but must at least good quality...

For example m&s baked beans 50p a tin, cheap, but tastes better than more expensive brands.

Fairy washing up liquid is more expensive but lasts long and is overall better economy

Laura mercer setting powder. Lasts ages, only need to use a tiny amount and doesn’t leave your make up looking cakey. Costs much more but worth i.

JMSA · 14/05/2023 19:26

Cheap bin bags are the devil's work.

Sainsbury's decaf Earl grey - I like it better than Twinings

MacBook Air - I felt sick at the price when I bought it, but it's brilliant to use.

Ecover washing up liquid

Lavazza coffee (although I try to stock up when it's on offer)

Arket and Cos t-shirts - cost twice as much as say M&S or Next, but keep their shape/colour ten times as long

Twinings Earl Grey is horrid. Have you tried the Tesco Finest one? It's my favourite.

With my back, Voltarol!

Gatekeeper · 14/05/2023 19:28

Longley Farm cottage cheese- everything else is watery shite
Fevertree tonic water but has to be the full sugar one. Tonics with sweetener taste far too sweet with a funny aftertaste
I always used fairy washing up liquid but they changed the smell- the swines!

I never understand the Lurpak love on here, proper butter is so much nicer! Lurpak is like margarine in comparison.

cushioncovers · 14/05/2023 19:40

Lurpak
Oatley barista milk
Ciro tinned tomatoes

CheersForThatEh · 14/05/2023 19:41

Neom bubble bath. Cost per bath makes it an affordable luxury.

TV- disney, netflix.

Drink - good quality spirits. Cheaper per serving than wine.

Fairislefandango · 14/05/2023 19:42

I agree with you that it's over-hyped, but surely it is proper butter? Are you referring to the spreadable version that's mixed with vegetable oil? Because the block is just butter.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 14/05/2023 19:43

Armani luminous silk foundation.doesnt sink into lines.

Oh, I was referring to the spreadable one, I forget there's a block. It's so pale and plasticky.

Eleven o clock organic rooibos tea

I simply cannot
Justify a fiver for lurpak and eat so little bread the Aldi version will do

It has to be Yorkshire teabags tho

Hellman's mayo

And hello fresh for amazing, good quality, no waste meal boxes .
The meat , veg , are amazing quality.
I live alone so cooking can be wasteful- I get 6 meals out of a 3 meal two person box and it's amazing value . This week I've added brunch for the weekend so will be treating myself to a full English breakfast Saturday and Sunday!

Aesop geranium leaf body cleanser. It's ridiculously expensive at £35 for 500ml but it lasts months and months, smells delicious and is really nice on my (very) dry skin. I saved up and bought the matching body lotion which is a quite ludicrous £75 and is definitely not worth the money.

I use a body cream after each shower (usually a cheapish Vaseline / Dove or similar) but when I'm feeling flush (rare nowadays) Laura Mercier Almond Coconut Soufflé Body Crème is my worth every penny go-to. No need for perfume as the scent lasts all day.

smoothieooo · 14/05/2023 19:53

.. oh and Neom Real Luxury diffusers! I have one in my hallway and one in my office at work after someone commented that my original one 'smelled of urine'!

Yorkshire tea biscuit brew..can't beat it.

WonderingWanda · 14/05/2023 19:56

The expensive cat food. Tried the cheap stuff, cat stopped eating and got ill, cost me a fortune at the vets.

Estee Lauder Double Wear.

God damn it.

For a year i've tried so hard to find something as good and it's wasted more money than if i'd just bloody bought it in the first place 🙄

Same, stays on all day

Fairy Liquid (use twice as much with other brands)
Nocerella olives (others have no flavour in comparison)
Diet Coke ( no nasty aftertaste)
Good white wine. Organic/ over £8 a bottle, others are like drinking sweetened vinegar 🙈
Sheba or Gourmet cat food according to the 🐈 😆 if its available in a tin he doesn't want to know🙈
Chocolate (if you going to eat it may as well be good stuff)
Tilde/Laila/Badshah Basmati rice only.. own brand is sticky clumpy and won't give your food the finish it deserves
Filipo pasta sauces, again why waste your protein by putting in a cheap sauce full of sugars and chemically tastes.
Organic fruit always tastes better IMO.. don't notice with veggies
Coffee, especially instant..noticeable difference in taste.

We use cheap rice and it's never sticky. Use 2:1 water to rice ratio, bring to the boil and simmer. When its dry, take it off the heat, leave the lid on and let it steam down. Fluffy rice that separates with a fork.
