In the cost of living crisis, things have increased in price, while value, quality and quantity has diminished...

So what do you think is worth buying, worth the investment in thew tough times items can be cheap or expensive, but must at least good quality...

For example m&s baked beans 50p a tin, cheap, but tastes better than more expensive brands.

Fairy washing up liquid is more expensive but lasts long and is overall better economy

This is one item I was so disappointed with. It doesn't seem to lather up well.

Me too. Was looking forward to it from all the hype on here too.

Products:
Brazilian bum bum cream
By Terry mascara

Food:
Marmite
Lurpak

Drink:
Yorkshire tea

....all worth paying a bit extra for

JulieHoney · 14/05/2023 18:26

Personally I think Longley Farm butter knocks Lurpack into a cocked hat, it's superb.

Agree with Yorkshire Tea and Marmite and Hellmans, the other brands aren't right. For DC I'd include Weetabix.

Good, 100% cotton bedding (or linen if I could afford it)

Fairislefandango · 14/05/2023 18:28

Am I not allowed an opinion?

You certainly are! I was just disagreeing with it. Personal taste is different from quality though. I'd say that, independently of what you or I prefer, chocolate with a higher cocoa mass and no palm oil is objectively of higher quality. But that doesn't mean you have to like it more! I mean... tbh I like Hellman's better than posh homemade mayonnaise.

awakeeveeynight · 14/05/2023 18:29

@IfIGoThereWillBeTrouble - we've got the Rington's Tea man in Northumberland. He's famous around here. He also sells incredible biscuits.

Fairislefandango · 14/05/2023 18:20

What country do you live in that you have a local tea seller?

Northwest England! There are two independent coffee and tea companies (both with lovely attached café), one in each of my nearest decent-sized towns. There was one in the nearest town in the last two places I lived too. Not that unusual, surely?

No, we have them in Brighton and Worthing

RitaCrudgington · 14/05/2023 18:36

ASICS trainers.

Am I not allowed an opinion ? I actually despise Aldi/Lidl chocolate, and a lot of other brands.
‘And the person who doesn’t like Galaxy, but likes Minstrels 🤷🏼‍♀️

To quote you: am I not allowed an opinion???? How very odd.

universityhelp · 14/05/2023 18:43

Agree with Fairy washing up liquid, others are just watered down, I like the new design ones that have automatic squeezers from the bottom and no lid. Although, do also like Ecover when it's on offer.
Also Lurpak spreadable as normal butter is sometimes too hard or soft, so we always have a spreadable one as well. Lurpak is the only brand that is spreadable straight from the fridge and doesn't taste funny.
Longley Farm cottage cheese - all other types are vile.
I recently got into Clinique liquid soap after borrowing my dd's - it's really expensive but I love it and may keep buying it.

itwasntmetho · 14/05/2023 18:44

Isigny Sainte-Mere Unpasteurised butter.
Avene hydra 10.

TheChosenTwo · 14/05/2023 18:45

Oh @GeorgeGerald i just gave that handcream to a friend, got one in a Liberty box (although smaller than the one linked) and couldn’t stand the smell! Only gave it to her yesterday 🫣
for me one of the things worth it is real butter. Nothing spreadable will ever darken my door!!

BarelyLiterate · 14/05/2023 18:17

Have you noticed the massive shrinkflation this week? A standard block of Lurpak is now 200g, which is 20% smaller than it has always been. Blocks are now visibly smaller. The price, of course, has stayed the same.

Honestly it’s all over my head . I just buy lurpack because that’s what like . End off . It’s in the basket and bought .

As a Yorkshirewoman, I am ashamed to admit that I prefer PG tips to Yorkshire Tea. However, I do agree with PPs about Fairy Liquid.

Yajebbend · 14/05/2023 18:53

M and s bakery
good salt
decent tinfoil and bin bags

GreenPinkBlue · 14/05/2023 18:58

Califa barista oat milk
Fevertree Tonic Water
Armani Silk foundation
Elizabeth Arden Night Repair
Organic/free range meat
Lavazza coffee beans
Yorkshire Tea
Mutti tinned tomatoes
Scent
Persil non bio
Snag tights

Confrontayshunme · 14/05/2023 19:00

High thread count (400+) Egyptian cotton sheets. They wash well, last for decades and feel amazing. I always notice in hotels or other people's homes that the sheets are too scratchy for me.

GreenPinkBlue · 14/05/2023 19:00

Isigny Sainte-Mere Unpasteurised butter.
@itwasntmetho yes! Absolutely gorgeous on freshly baked bread!

ThinWomansBrain · 14/05/2023 19:01

Decent cheese 🧀
One of my Christmas gifts was a selection of superb cheese - it made me realise I'd rather eat less and buy good cheese, rather than base my selection on what's on offer at the supermarket.

Sainsbury's chicken gravy granules. I got to the end of a tub recently, Bisto isn't nearly as good
Waitrose Baked Beans - better taste and beans-to-sauce ratio compared to Heinz.
Nescafe Roastery Coffee
Cantu co-wash and curl revitaliser -I'm a bit of a hair product junkie, so often try other more expensive brands, but they rarely match up and I always come back to these.

TwoFluffyDogsOnMyBed · 14/05/2023 19:05

le Chameux (sp?) wellies….£100 very very well spent. Recommended by someone on here. They’re so comfy!!

Proper chocolate…Green & Blacks or Lindt usually. In fact, the best quality food I can afford generally.

Essexexile · 14/05/2023 19:08

Clarins Beauty Flash balm and Touché Eclat, not cheap but worth every penny.

Fairy washing up liquid for the reasons already mentioned.

YourFault · 14/05/2023 19:22

DustyLee123 · 14/05/2023 16:18

I could never buy cheap chocolate, has to be Galaxy, and only ever Yorkshire tea bags.

still pretty cheap…

Gatekeeper · 14/05/2023 19:23

IfIGoThereWillBeTrouble · 14/05/2023 16:55

What country do you live in that you have a local tea seller?

@IfIGoThereWillBeTrouble N.E England....Rington's deliver in person in little vans. Our teaman (S.W Durham) carries a wicker basket with tea, coffee and an assortment of biscuits. The ginger snaps are lovely and the choc covered brazil nut biscuits are like crack! I buy tea off them as did my parents and their parents before them going back 100 years or so

Georgyporky · 14/05/2023 19:23

Lurpak spreadable is not pure butter.
Who needs spreadable butter anyway ? I prefer mine sliced.

JMSA · 14/05/2023 19:24

Notanotherchange254 · 14/05/2023 15:37

Shoes. It's always worth buying the best you can afford and looking after footwear.

True. And better good secondhand than cheap new.

thebear1 · 14/05/2023 19:25

Another one who thinks Fairy is worth it. Also heniz ketchup.
