In the cost of living crisis, things have increased in price, while value, quality and quantity has diminished...

So what do you think is worth buying, worth the investment in thew tough times items can be cheap or expensive, but must at least good quality...

For example m&s baked beans 50p a tin, cheap, but tastes better than more expensive brands.

Fairy washing up liquid is more expensive but lasts long and is overall better economy

I agree with Fairy, my DH has been buying the Lidl brand in bulk and it is rubbish. Use three times as much for the same result

Same.

Dh does the shopping and insists on buying it as it’s cheaper.

I use the cheapest brand of everything else but this is just the pits. We go through three times as much so it doesn’t work out any cheaper.

Fedupmum21 · 14/05/2023 17:45

Oh and fly London boots. I won’t buy any other boots ever again. They are so comfy and last forever!

riotlady · 14/05/2023 17:46

Decent heavy duty bin bags

Regholdsworthswaterbed · 14/05/2023 17:49

Agree with slippers. I've always bought primark cheapies but got an expensive pair from ILs for Christmas and wouldn't go back.

ArrrMeHearties · 14/05/2023 17:51

Lurpak slightly salted

L'occitaine's almond shower oil - it's one of the few shower gels I'm not allergic to, it leaves my skin feeling & smelling lovely and it lasts far longer than some of the cheaper products I've tried

This is one item I was so disappointed with. It doesn't seem to lather up well.

Nuxe not nice

Yorkshire tea.
Premium brand tyres.
Budvar lager.

louderthan · 14/05/2023 17:57

Marmite
Colman's mustard
Fairy liquid
Thick cut back bacon

SideEyeSally · 14/05/2023 17:59

I got a pair of Rubis tweezers as a gift a few years ago and thought £30 was an outrageous price for tweezers. When I inevitably lost them I bought myself another set and DH got himself a pair too. I don't know why they are so much better but they are, never go blunt, never break hairs, never miss a skelf.

Katkin frozen cat food deliveries. Def more expensive than own brand but I think cheaper than Applaws or Sheba. Cats have never turned their nose up at a single flavour, their coats are so so lovely, and the little one has stopped throwing up.

caffelattetogo · 14/05/2023 18:00

Yes to thick bin bags. And a decent bin.

Upwiththelark76 · 14/05/2023 18:03

Honestly …. Lurpack butter … nothing else will do .

throwawayaway1 · 14/05/2023 18:04

Ultra Violette sunscreen

DustyLee123 · 14/05/2023 18:07

I tried keeping butter out in a butter dish, but it just wasn’t spreadable.

Thomasina79 · 14/05/2023 18:07

Marmite. I even take a supply on holiday!

KleineDracheKokosnuss · 14/05/2023 18:09

Yorkshire tea
fairy liquid
an eco egg for washing
aldi salmon wellington
proper thick cut bacon from the butcher

and before I moved it was bin bags of childrens clothes, £10 a bag. We always loved going through them and it saved so much money. It’s not a ‚thing‘ in the new place though.

Hellmans mayo. I've tried cheaper makes, but they're always too vinegary or too greasy. Hellmans is perfect.

Eggs from my local farm shop.

Flash bathroom cleaner. We have very hard water and nothing else I've tried works as well as Flash.

I am a Hellmans fan, but it's recently been discontinued where I live 👀

I hope it won't be the case for you too.

Haven't found a close dupe yet, but Heinz seriously good is pretty good substitute.

Fairislefandango · 14/05/2023 18:16

I could never buy cheap chocolate, has to be Galaxy

Galaxy is cheap chocolate. It's greasy, sickly and full of palm oil. You can get better quality chocolate even cheaper than Galaxy though. Aldi Moser Roth is lovely and has no vegetable oil in it.

Have you noticed the massive shrinkflation this week? A standard block of Lurpak is now 200g, which is 20% smaller than it has always been. Blocks are now visibly smaller. The price, of course, has stayed the same.

Ohfgsjon · 14/05/2023 18:19

Charlotte Tilbury Flawless Filter. I tried the elf halo supposed dupe the other day. It's nothing like it, not even close.

Diet coke.

Belvoir Farm cordials.

Longley Farm cottage cheese.

Proper Greek Yoghurt.

A really good ironing board. Don't buy cheap!

Miele hoover.

Fairislefandango · 14/05/2023 18:20

What country do you live in that you have a local tea seller?

Northwest England! There are two independent coffee and tea companies (both with lovely attached café), one in each of my nearest decent-sized towns. There was one in the nearest town in the last two places I lived too. Not that unusual, surely?

Am I not allowed an opinion ? I actually despise Aldi/Lidl chocolate, and a lot of other brands.
‘And the person who doesn’t like Galaxy, but likes Minstrels 🤷🏼‍♀️

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 14/05/2023 18:22

Lurpak butter

Pink Lady apples, there isn't a sweeter, crunchier apple
